UPA allies join hands with Opposition to slam petrol price hike
New Delhi, September 16
Protesters burn an effigy of the UPA govt in Mumbai. The Trinamool Congress and the DMK today forced the government to hold back any move to limit the supply of subsidised LPG even as the allies joined the Opposition in demanding the rollback of hike in petrol prices. The decision of the government to hike the rate of petrol by Rs 3 per litre witnessed a political and public outrage across the country.

Pay more for loans as RBI raises rates
New Delhi, September 16
Just a day after petrol prices were hiked by around Rs 3 per litre, consumers will have to deal with higher loan repayments and interest rates. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today hiked the Repo (the rate at which it lends to banks) and the Reverse Repo (the rate at which it borrows from banks) by 25 basis points each. (100 basis points equals 1 per cent). These now stand at 8.25 per cent and 7.25 per cent, respectively.

Security environment uncertain: PM
New Delhi, September 16
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today termed the security environment in the country as “uncertain”. Mentioning recent incidents of Mumbai and Delhi, he said the cross-border terror camps were being re-activated. He asked for improvement in human intelligence gathering capacities.

Resolve Sehajdhari voting issue in one month: SC to HC
New Delhi, September 16
The Sehajdhari Sikhs today failed to get the right to vote in the SGPC elections on September 18, but got some relief from the Supreme Court. A Bench comprising Justices JM Panchal and HL Gokhale asked the Punjab and Haryana High Court to resolve the controversy over the voting right within a month, if possible, and clarified that the outcome of the September 18 elections would be subject to the HC verdict.

SC: Do not open Kerala temple’s vault B for now
New Delhi, September 16
The Supreme Court said today that the question of opening vault B of Kerala's Sree Padmanabhaswamy temple will be considered only after steps have been taken for the protection and conservation of the artefacts that were taken out from other vaults. An apex court bench of Justices RV Raveendran and AK Patnaik gave the ruling while reserving its order on the recommendations of the expert committee on the security of the valuables from other vaults.

UK motion on ‘rights violations’ in J-K falls flat
London, September 16
Efforts to rake up the alleged human rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir by backbenchers in the UK Parliament virtually fell flat as the debate on the issue drew few takers, even as the government here asserted that it was for India and Pakistan to resolve the problem bilaterally.
