MBA dilemma
Cambridge best university in the world |
Gurdip Anand gives pointers on how MBA aspirants should negotiate through the web of lies and misrepresentation of facts that they encounter in search of a good business school
DOES an MBA degree really prepare students for success in the corporate world? The answer is “yes”. However, a better answer is a “qualified yes”. Somebody might even respond to this question by saying “yes and no”. Technically, all the answers are right. Though the rhetorical question asked would require a book-sized answer, I am narrowing it down to only to a few factors, which would help a young person to “succeed” in business life. The most relevant and important question is, does education for an MBA degree impart enough “knowledge” to students for succeeding in business life? Superior functional knowledge about one’s area of operation would certainly help a young person to succeed better on the job. Most MBA schools have a curriculum that broadly covers a substantial part of the subject matter. The problem lies in the fact that the “lecture” in an average business school merely delivers only a “handshake” acquaintance about the subject. This modicum of knowledge is certainly not adequate to deal with the “real-life” issues, which the student will face at his job. Here lies the “rub”. So, what is the remedy for this deficiency? It is only when the student has studied that topic of the lecture in three-four books before he comes for the class, that he would be ready to engage the teacher in a penetrative discussion. When all the students engage in such a dialogue, many of the underlying questions are raised and some clarity does emerge. The student who has already read books on the topic concerned will bring many more ideas to the fore. The other students, however, realise that they cannot contribute to the discussion, since they have not come prepared for the dialogue and, therefore, become mere “listeners”. A student, who has prior work experience, would bring the real-life challenges that he faced whilst applying these ideas on the job. This would provide a third set of experiences and related questions for discussion. When this happens, the class would end up with some penetrative thoughts and a lot of questions about the subject matter. In such a situation, most of the students would leave the class, struggling with a lot of unresolved and unanswered questions, about the area of discussion. This would challenge them enough to go back and quickly go through a lot of stuff on the subject. They would seek out the better-read students and the teacher for bringing some more light on the unresolved issues. Thus, the obvious question arises: In how many business schools do the above ideal conditions prevail? The honest answer is that on the Indian business educational scene, this happens not even in one per cent of our business schools! This brings us to the basic question that a superior teachershould not be “teaching” a master’s class. He should be moderating and provoking a discussion among the students. And I would certainly not like to comment on the quality of teachers who teach at our business schools. If I did so, I would lose a lot of friends! Now the question that arises is, is the knowledge of subject matter enough for success in the corporate world? The answer, of course, is “no, not at all”. Then, what else is required? It all depends on the quality of the faculty at the MBA School. This is where the rubber hits the road. Many MBA schools make claims about having superior faculty in their advertisements. How should a student pierce through this web of deceit? Let’s examine some of the “tricks” played by many “ordinary” MBA schools and also examine as to how an MBA aspirant should untangle the prevailing web of lies and glaring misrepresentation of facts. The “acid test” an aspiring MBA student can undertake is to evaluate the quality of the faculty at an MBA school. It is a fact that students from the highly ranked MBA schools draw salary packages which are three to four times of what their teachers draw. People often ask the rhetorical question: “Why do these teachers not join the corporate world?” The answer is that most corporates see no value in hiring managers who don’t have any professional experience/expertise and are pure theoreticians. A big debate ensued recently when former Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh made a statement that “the quality of students at IIMs was indeed superior, but not the quality of the faculty”. So, how should one assess the quality of the faculty? It is actually quite simple; just ask the following questions: Has the faculty served as a consultant to at least 10 to 15 leading corporate houses in India or abroad? Has the faculty served at the top management level in any of the leading business houses in the country or abroad for more than 10 years? Has the faculty served as a corporate trainer to at least 10 to 15 leading corporate houses in India or abroad? Has the faculty got experience in conducting business in at least three continents across the globe? If the answer is a “yes” to at least three of the above four questions, the faculty is superior and fully qualified to teach at a business school. If not, “scratch” the name of such business schools from your list, since they are hiring “unqualified” faculty. My personal belief is that the last criterion would disqualify 90 per cent of the business schools in the country, since they do not have “proper faculty” on their rolls. We need to deal with the web of lies and it’s time we told the “truth” and the “unqualified truth” about the quality of management education in most of the business schools in our country. Now, you know why corporates keep screaming that 90 per cent of our country’s graduates and MBAs are unemployable!
