SC leaves Modi fate to trial court
Says Ahmedabad Sessions Court must assess evidence against Gujarat CM in ’02 riots 
Won’t monitor case any more as probe was over; makes no mention of SIT findings

Without making any comment on the investigation report on the allegations against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi over the 2002 riots, the Supreme Court today made it clear it was for the trial court to make its own assessment and decide whether to proceed against him or not.

Final matrix emerging

Investigators probing the last Wednesday’s Delhi High Court blast case have made some progress and slowly the links are being pieced together. A final matrix is emerging that could not only solve the recent case, but also help in cracking the Mumbai blasts case of July 13.

July industrial growth plunges to 21-month low

Industrial output growth in July slumped to 3.3 per cent, the lowest in almost two years, accentuating fears that a slowdown is imminent. Capital goods, manufacturing and mining posted a very poor performance indicating weakness in the economy. Such figures were last seen in October 2009.

Manmohan, Gilani may meet in US

The possibility of a meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart Yousaf Raza Gilani on the margins of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) session in New York later this month is not ruled out, sources said today.

Appear in trial court, SC tells Jaya
New Delhi, September 12
The Supreme Court today asked Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to personally appear before a Karnataka trial court on October 20 and make her statement in a corruption case pending against her. A Bench comprising Justices Dalveer Bhandari and Deepak Verma passed the order after senior counsel Harish Salve, arguing for Jayalalithaa, stated that his client had agreed to appear before the trial court, provided adequate security was given to her by holding the hearing in a special building. She also wanted her statement to be recorded the same day.

Punjabi students hit language barrier in UK
Faridkot, September 12
Four months after the UK made changes in its student visa rules, many Punjabi students in the UK have already been sent back and more may follow for failing to clear the newly introduced English language requirement test. From April 6 this year, the English language requirement has been changed from B1 to B2 level. This means that those going to the UK for graduation will have to appear for the English language test at the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference.
