Ahead of Cabinet rejig, PM calls on President
New Delhi, July 1
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today called on President Pratibha Patil amid speculation about a Cabinet reshuffle. The meeting lasted 45 minutes, the Rashtrapati Bhavan said in a press communiqué. “The two leaders discussed about the forthcoming monsoon session of Parliament and the current political situation. They also discussed various other issues of national and international importance,” it added.

IOA wants probe into doping scam
Slams anti-doping agency NADA, says it should have conducted regular tests

Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president Vijay Kumar Malhotra came down heavily on the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) for its failure to detect the positive dope cases of Mandeep Kaur and Jauna Murmu, which came to light only when the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) conducted out-of-competition tests during the national camp in Patiala in May.

N-deals with Delhi on course: France
New Delhi, July 1
A day after the US backed the clean waiver given to India by the Nuclear Suppliers’ Group (NSG), France and Russia assured New Delhi that they were committed to the full implementation of their civil nuclear deals with India. “France confirms that the NSG decision in no way undermines the parameters of our bilateral cooperation,” French Ambassador to India Jerome Bonnafont said here.

Long after the West woke up to the utility of service animals for persons with disabilities, India has also turned a fresh leaf with its new disability law mandating the facility of service animals by law. As and when the government approves the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Bill, 2011

2 Samjhauta blast accused now proclaimed offenders
Panchkula, July 1
A special National Investigating Agency (NIA) court today declared 2007 Samjhauta Express blast case absconding accused Sandeep Dange and Ramchandra Kalasangra as proclaimed offenders. Main accused Swami Aseemanand was also produced for the first time after filing of the chargesheet on June 20 in the court of NIA special judge Subhash Mehla here. Another accused, Lokesh Sharma was also produced in the court. The next date of hearing is fixed for July 18.

Hema wants ban on TN’s matador sport
New Delhi, July 1
Actress-turned-politician Hema Malini today joined animal lovers in demanding a ban on ‘jallikattu’, a bull-taming sport played in Tamil Nadu during Pongal celebrations, saying it violates the spirit of the law against torturing animals. The Rajya Sabha MP has written to Minister of Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh on behalf of NGO People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) urging him to make a “hugely positive impact for bulls by taking steps” to put an end to the sport.
