Preparing to study abroad
I had just been promoted to the 12th grade that my parents started worrying about my future, reminding me that this was the most crucial year of my life. And they were right, because every decision I took during that one year has played a major role in shaping my life so far. The never-ending decision-making phase started off with choosing the universities that I wanted to apply to in the US. It can be hard for any student to realise as to how vital it is to carefully pick his choices at the moment.
Even though most of the institutions deny the fact that seeking early admission increases one’s chances of being accepted into a school, statistics show that it’s true. The thought of knowing for sure as to which college I was going to before even appearing for my board exams appealed to me and I was all set to prepare for the SAT Reasoning Test that needs practise in terms of time management, but the grades mainly depend on the aptitude of the student. An average student wouldn’t be able to memorise enough vocabulary for the test but a smart one wouldn’t need to do the same, since it becomes easy to guess the meaning of a word according to context, if he is good at English language in general. The practise exams for the SAT not only mentally prepare the student for this particular test but also give him confidence to prepare for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), which is much easier but requires separate preparation. The entire procedure of securing a place at a reputed university abroad involves time management. While preparing for these exams along with working on the essays required for applying to institutions and volunteering at various places for a good profile, one must make sure to do well in high school since even though there is a small chance that the university that offers you early admission will reconsider the decision if the projected grades are lower than they were supposed to be, there still is some chance. “One must not get disheartened by rejection, since it is just the beginning of the long journey with ups and downs and tons of life lessons,” Kanika Chotani, a student in her senior year of graduation in the US, says. “Every student should know that whatever works out in the end is best for him and that he should make the most of it. It is not only about which institution you join, it is also about what you are capable of accomplishing once you’re there.” The early acceptance letter gives a student the right frame of mind to finally concentrate only on high school and board exams. The last four months before flying should carefully be utilised in the preparation for the most challenging year in colleges abroad—the freshman year. Devise strategy to enhance employability
SURPRISINGLY, the number of graduates churned out in India by various universities, management and technical institutes is assuming phenomenal proportions. However, the number among those passing out is found to be only about 20 per cent employable.
Of the 2.5 million university graduates India produces each year, nearly 20 per cent have engineering and management degrees/diplomas, but the National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) estimates that only 25 per cent of the technical graduates and 15 per cent of management graduates meet the standards of employability considered minimum essential by the companies in the information technology (IT) and management-related services sectors. The same is the state of other sectors, with an element of desperation creeping into it of late. Apparently, highly educated and some even PhD holders cannot string a few words together orally/writing with any degree of cogency. The knowledge of their subject is also shockingly poor. What is causing acute anxiety is the fact that a large proportion of even the graduates from IIMs and IITs does not measure up to the claims of highly recognised quality. The placement process is becoming conspicuously sticky, with increasing number of employers refusing to accept the degrees conferred at face value and insisting on putting the candidates through various rigorous tests to adjudge their employability. Many of the top-notch institutions have been experiencing a fall in the number of employers visiting the campuses for recruitment and are fudging placement figures. Few among them have put in place a thoroughgoing alumni-tracking system. It is surprising that very few management and technical graduates opt to become entrepreneurs when the funds are available for them to take up projects of national interest. Rural area development is completely neglected by the fresh graduates who can be suitably employed there. The government is yet to come up with a clear-cut strategy to enhance the employability of the job seekers whose rapidly swelling numbers are threatening to lead to social upheavals. Mechanisms such as the National Skills Development Corporation and the National Innovation Council can only serve a limited purpose, since honing of vocational skills and enhancing employability is not one and the same thing. The first and foremost part of that strategy is to ensure the adequacy of the infrastructure of educational institutions, the quality of teaching, the credibility of evaluation and the accountability of the teaching community and those running the institutions. The strategy will have to take account of the needs of particular sectors. For instance, skills conducive to employability in the manufacturing or IT sector may not be the same as pharmaceuticals or automobiles. Result orientation, self-motivation and stress on business ethics and corporate governance should be the core parts of the strategy. It is high time the government, private sector and civil society took up the challenge by formulating, and putting into effect, a plan of action as an imperative duty they owe to the well-being of future generation. Campus Notes Varsity inks pact with NSE
THE Directorate of Distance Education of Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) in collaboration with the National Stock Exchange (NSE) will introduce MBA (Financial Markets) and BBA (Financial Markets) courses from the current academic session. A memorandum of understanding in this regard was signed by MDU authorities and NSE Vice-President T.Venkat Rao at a function held here recently. The NSE will also provide on-the-job training to students under this programme. According to varsity authorities, the courses to be run under the agreement with the NSE include MBA (Financial Markets) and BBA (Financial Markets) in the industry integrated and distance education modes and these will start from the current session. It is claimed that these unique degree courses are a blend of academic and employable skills, in which students will get hands-on practical experience of around 18 months to 30 months. The NSE will also train the faculty of all affiliated colleges/study centres of MDU and will provide a panel of industry professionals who will deliver guest lectures in these colleges. Apart from training the faculty, the NSE will provide a mock investment, trading and portfolio management software, so that students can develop essential skills for financial markets. Meanwhile, the university has signed a pact with NIAM Educational Services for establishing its online campus at the Directorate of Distance Education of the university. The online campus will provide an opportunity to the students who are living in the far-flung areas and are unable to attend either a study centre or a college to pursue their studies further. EC gives nod to start new courses The Executive Council (EC) of the university at its meeting held recently gave its approval for the introduction of a slew of courses through the Directorate of Distance Education (DDE). The courses to be introduced from the forthcoming academic session include MSc (Genomics), BTech (Electrical Engineering) and BTech (Civil Engineering). The body also approved the introduction of MA (Hons) in Public Administration (five-year integrated course) from the current session. Last date extended The last date for the submission of application forms for Master’s in Library and Information Science (two-year integrated course) has been extended by the university. According to a university spokesperson, interested candidates may now apply for the course up to July 7. Notably, 40 seats are available in the course. Results declared The university has declared the results of BA/BSc/BCom (Part I). According to the Controller of Examinations, the results are available on the university website www.mdurohtak.ac.in. He said the candidates who wish to appear in the October 2011 examination on the basis of their result could submit their examination forms up to July 5 without late fee. Alumni association The university has initiated the process of online registration of its alumni for the purpose of constitution of the MDU Alumni Association. The alumni registration form has been made available on the university website www.mdurohtak.ac.in. Interested alumni can download and fill in the form or they can also send e-mails to directoralumni.mdu@gmail.com and mdu.alumni@gmail.com for registration, said an official. — Contributed by Bijendra Ahlawat |
