PCR complaints in city’s south go north

Complaints made to the Chandigarh police control room (PCR) have touched an all-time high, with the police receiving more than 26,000 calls from distressed city residents in the first six months of the year alone, which is the highest number ever.

Wee-Hour horror: 50-year-old guard stoned to death

In a bizarre incident, a 50-year-old security guard posted on an entry gate to Phase 3B2 here was brutally killed with stones by two inebriated youths, including a son of a retired Lieut-Colonel, who flew into a rage on finding the gate closed at 2.15 am in the wee hours today.

Postgraduate result delay gives students a tough time
Chandigarh, July 1
An unwarranted delay in the declaration of results by Panjab University (PU) for postgraduate courses (MA/MSc/M.Com) has led to a tormenting time for outgoing students, who need to appear for job interviews or apply for further studies in other universities. For most postgraduate courses, it has almost been a month since the exams got over.

Police file charge sheet
Chandigarh, July 1
More than 45 days after a Chandigarh Police constable posted as naib court in the UT district courts was assaulted in a courtroom by a group of lawyers, the police filed a detailed charge sheet against 14 advocates in the court of Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMIC) SK Sharma today. The court issued notices to the advocates to appear in person on July 16.

Radio taxi, auto fares to go up
Chandigarh, July 1
The fares of radio taxis and radio auto-rickshaws are set to go up in the city by 20-25 per cent.  A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting held here under the chairmanship of KK Sharma, Adviser to UT Administrator, here today.

MC’s ambitious plan awaits government nod
Zirakpur, July 1
The MC’s ambitious plan to install closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras all across the town for security purposes has run into rough weather.Sources in the MC stated that the council had sent a proposal for installing CCTVs for approval to the higher authorities, but the council did not get any reply from the government. An amount of Rs 9 lakh would be spent on the project.

50 pc concession in fee for those availing ‘special chance’
Chandigarh, July 1
Panjab University has allowed 50 per cent concession in the fee to those availing ‘special chance’ for the examination of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, to take examination in re- appear or compartment category in the September or December 2011. The new fee structure will be applicable to scheduled castes, schedules tribes, physical handicapped, blind students and those living below poverty line.

Court orders auctioning of MC office furniture

The District Sessions Court, Fatehgarh Sahib, has ordered to release an advertisement to auction furniture and tractor trolley of the Bassi Pathana Municipal Council. The orders have been issued following failure of the council to pay Rs 80,000 to a contractor who filed a petition in the court.

Insurance co. told to pay Rs 2.51-lakh claim
Chandigarh, July 1
The UT Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum has directed National Insurance Company to pay motor vehicle insurance accident claim of Rs 2.51 lakh to a Panchkula-based company, MG Contractor Pvt Ltd. The forum has also directed the insurance company to pay Rs 30,000 in compensation for delaying the clearance of the claim.

Hindustan Filters fined for not servicing water filter

District Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum has imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 for not servicing a water purifier system besides asking the firm to repay Rs 7,500.

Virtually passing strictures on the UT administration, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has ruled that its “stand on prestige against a lowly placed person does not speak well of the administration”.

4 booked for killing newlywed woman
Zirakpur, July 1
The Zirakpur Police today booked four persons of a family, including two women, for killing a newlywed woman. The accused have been identified as Kulwant Singh, husband of the victim, Harjeet Kaur, her mother-in-law, brother-in-law Parshotam Singh and sister-in-law Pavneet Kaur.
