BJP, Kranti Dal flay fuel price hike
Jammu, June 26 Shocked by the UPA government’s decision to once again raise the prices of petrol, diesel, LPG and kerosene oil, BJP activists of Jammu district led by their president Rajesh Gupta, held a protest at Kachi Chawni Chowk. They carried empty LPG cylinders and placards with slogans against the Congress-led UPA government and demanded the immediate rollback of the price hike. Gupta, while addressing the protesters, said the history showed that people had to suffer whenever the Congress was in power. He alleged that the Congress was playing into the hands of big businessmen and industrialists, and the party was least concerned about the common man. Gupta alleged during the past one year the Centre had taken several anti-poor decisions as a result of which the prices of essential commodities had gone up. It had become difficult for even a middle class families to manage two meals a day. The party would further agitate on the issue, he added. Vikram Randhawa, Karan Singh, Ramesh Sharma, Priya Jral, Meera Sarmal, Surinder Pargal, Prashant Puri, Parduman Singh, Sunil Dogra, Arun Khosla, Pardeep Sharma, Mamata Singh, Sakina Bano and others addressed the rally. Meanwhile, the Kranti Dal organised a rally against the fuel price hike under the leadership of Roop Singh Chib and Pritam Sharma. The rally passed through different areas of Jammu city and its workers shouted slogans against the UPA government for putting additional burden on common people. Srinagar: State secretary of the CPM Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami today expressed deep concern over the rise in petroleum prices and demanded their rollback immediate. In a statement, Tarigami said the rise in the prices of petrol, diesel, kerosene oil and cooking gas had a direct impact on the common man’s economy, which was sure to affect the growth rate as well. He said the Indian economy, which is an agricultural and developing one, was domestically driven and hence the escalation in the fuel prices would badly affect it and the common people in the coming days. Tarigami said the price-line and other economic factors were considered during the annual budgeting, but it seemed the fuel price hike remained out of its ambit and was being done any time, which was not good for the health of the country’s economy. He said though the rise in petroleum prices at the international level could not outrightly be overlooked, there should be some anticipatory economic measures kept ready to ensure minimum and affordable increases in the petroleum prices. He added another measure to tackle the unreasonable and unaffordable price rise in petrol and diesel was to explore the country’s own petro resources. The CPM leader said an increase of Rs 35 per LPG cylinder was beyond the budget of the common man, who was already reeling under high food prices and other economic compulsions. He said the decision to deregulate the prices of petrol and increase in diesel and kerosene oil prices would prove disastrous for our economy. He urged the Central government to roll back the price rise with immediate effect. |

Srinagar, June 26 While attempts were made by angry demonstrators to defy curfew in Sopore town, the train services between Qazigund and Baramulla were suspended this afternoon as a preventive measure in the wake of the reports of stone throwing at different locations between Pattan and Sopore. There were also reports of stone throwing at Baghe-Mehtab on the city outskirts between Srinagar and Budgam railway stations. Though the morning trains plied normally, the reports of incidents of stone throwing in these areas led to the suspension of the train services after 2 pm, officials said. This is for the first time since the train services began in Kashmir on October 11, 2008, that the services were suspended due to the reports of protests. The two-day bandh call, which began today, was given by both factions of the Hurriyat Conference in protest against the killing of Shakeel Ahmad Ganai and Firdous Ahmad in Sopore yesterday. This is for the second consecutive day today that the normal life remained paralysed in Kashmir. The hardline APHC had called for a protest bandh yesterday against the alleged human rights violations in Kashmir. Groups of protesters defied curfew restrictions in Sopore town at three places and held demonstrations in Haathi Shah, Jamia Qadeem and Chhanakhan areas, reports said. The trouble started in the Chhanakhan area where two youths were killed and three others injured in the firing by the CRPF. A mob took to the streets claiming that one of the two militants killed in the encounter earlier in the morning at Krankshuwan was a civilian. The police, without giving the identity of the militants, said that they were involved in the killing of the president of the Traders Federation, Sopore, Ghulam Nabi Khan, last month, besides a civilian and two Congress workers. Meanwhile, senior PDP leader and former minister Mohammad Dilawar Mir, while expressing shock and anguish over the killing of the youths, has criticised the government for its failure to protect lives and property of the people. In a statement, Mir condemned the killings saying the law and order situation in the state had worsened and the people, especially youths, felt very insecure. “The government seems totally non-existent on the ground and the situation has reverted to post 1990 period, Mir said. He added that the wanton arrest of youths in Srinagar and atrocities on rural populace had turned the valley into hell. He held that the government instead of punishing the guilty was using oppressive measures to suppress people’s anguish and sentiments, causing further resentment. |

He attributed the downward slide in terrorism to the dedication of and cohesiveness among all security agencies in the state.
