ABVP protests against college authorities
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, February 10
In yet another autocrat move, the Akhil Bhartiya Vidya Parishad (ABVP) of DAV (PG) College today closed the college for an indefinite period for not releasing tenders for
whitewashing the college buildings.

The party workers asked students to leave the college and closed the rooms and offices. They also raised slogans against the college authorities for not agreeing to their demands. Sensing trouble, Principal BL Nautiyal had to call the police to control the situation.

Whitewash and other cleanliness work is underway at the college by labourers, while the ABVP wants that a tender should be floated for the work like every year and it should be done by contractor.

The party alleged that the Principal was involved in the manipulation of funds.

While the Principal said the tender was not an issue with the party.

They actually wanted to get admission of their desired candidates done, to which he had refused and they had resorted to such antics.

“The work has been underway for the past about 20 days. Why do they have an issue today? How can I give admission to the candidates in February when these are closed since December?” questioned the Principal.

He said for the past some years the work was being done by floating tenders through contractors, who seldom worked.

“This time, with an expenditure of just Rs 1.3 lakh we have done the work to make the college neat and clean,” added Nautiyal.

Quarrying on Ganga Ghats
Matra Sadan saints to continue stir
Tribune News Service

Haridwar, February 10
After making the state government increase the Kumbh Mela area in Haridwar district, Matra Sadan saints now have shifted focus on banning quarrying in Ganga ghats in the region.

Matra Sadan saints have been agitating for several months to increase the Kumbh area and to make area free of quarrying. In the process, they have had to bear several difficulties including registration of several cases against them.

A notification was issued last week by Anoop Badhawan, Chief Secretary, Urban Development, which stated the increase of the mela area in the district. Now, the Kumbh mela area will cover Delhi-Haridwar highway at the 13th milestone on way to Roorkee, Bahadrabad-Haridwar area including Sitapur village, railway bridge on Haridwar-Rishikesh bypass road, Jiopata village and Ganga banks alongside 4 km route of the Haridwar-Najibabad road.

Swami Dayanand, Swami Shivanand Maharaj and Swami Yajanand have been on hunger strike for the inclusion of more areas in the Kumbh area and for a ban on quarrying being carried out on the Ganga banks at Ajeetpur, Jiopata and Missirpur villages.

While Swami Yajanand and Shivanand Maharaj have broke their fast last weekend with District Magistrate R Meenakshi Sundaram going to Matra Sadan to apprise the saints of the state government’s decision.

But Swami Dayanand is still on strike as no assurance from the administration has come regarding the prohibition of quarrying on Ganga ghats at Missirpur, Katarpur, Jiopata and Jagjeetpur.

The Kumbh mela area will be in effect till April 30 and with the inclusion of these areas, developmental works will be carried out in these places.

Matra Sadan saints are hopeful that the quarrying mafia would also have to bow as it is illegal and harmful for the Ganga.

Swami Yajanand said that till the government issued a notification on prohibiting quarrying in the area, their movement would continue.

Dehradun, February 10
Members of the Akhil Bhartiya Rashtriya Gorkha Morcha Party held a meeting here yesterday. Around 900 members from Tehri, Dehradun, Haridwar and Pauri district, along with the block level, gathered and discussed important issues under the leadership of Capt JB Karki (retd), national president and former vice-president of the Other Backward Classes (OBC) Commission of the state.

However, the main issue, which was discussed at length, was pertaining to the casual attitude of the state government in issuing OBC certificates to the Gorkha community, indirectly depriving them of the benefits of reservation. “On November 16, 2003, under the government order, the Gorkha community was given the rights to be a part of the OBC. Later the final assurance was given by former Chief Minister ND Tiwari. However, after a few years of benefits under the government orders, for the past 12 months our community is again facing similar problems with an unrealistic demand for property and wealth certificate for the past 50 years in the state of Uttarakhand,” said Karki.

Present members condemned the policies of the state government even asserted that the tenure of the OBC certificate from six months should be extended to five years.

Furthermore, for the next session of the Akhil Bhartiya Rashtriya Gorkha Morcha Party, Trepan Singh Rajwar was elected district president for Uttarakhaski district and Chandra Ram Nautiyal vice-president of Dehradun district.
