Nainital, January 31
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is all set to initiate a mass public contact programme after a fortnight to take stock of the problems of people and take these up with the state government.

According to new general secretary of the BJP Suresh Joshi, “In 2010, the party will be focusing on development besides targeting the segments of women, youth, SCs and STs. We will be reviewing the works done by the government over the past three years. People will be approached to know about the problems being faced by them and these will be taken up at the party and then at the government level.”

On the issue of the ongoing strike of Ministerial Services employees that has brought the functioning of offices to a standstill, besides incurring heavy economic losses, Joshi said the employees should withdraw their strike in the interest of the state. “We are a new state and we have been among the first ones to give our employees the benefits of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations. We have given them benefits to the tune of Rs 3,000 crore”.

Joshi once again aired the grudge of other BJP leaders of the state that the Centre was delaying permission for development works. He said state Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank met Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh seven times and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh twice and it was only then that the permission for restarting mining on the banks of the Gola river was granted.

When questioned about the delays on the part of the state government in providing requisite papers to the Centre with regards to the Gola river, he claimed the first proposal for extending mining permission had been sent in 2008.

He also questioned the failure of the five Congress Lok Sabha mbers elected from the state to raise issues pertaining to the state and charged that they were scared of Congress President Sonia Gandhi and the Prime Minister to do so. Joshi was evasive when asked what his own party was doing as the Opposition in Parliament on the issues raised by him.

Yuva Morcha burns effigy of Central govt
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, January 31
In opposition to rising prices, members of the Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha burnt the effigy of the Central government at the Clock Tower here today.

Led by their state president Vinod Kandari, the BJYM leader blamed the Congress government at the Centre for failing to check rising prices, which he said were affecting the common man. He said the prices of essential items like edible oils, vegetables and fruits had risen to all-time high and it had become very difficult for the poor to manage his daily food intake. He blamed the Congress of doing little to check price hike. “The Congress government seems least interested to check this rising inflation,” Kandari said.

Mahanagar BJP leader Rajkumar Jaiswal said the Congress which claimed to be protector of the poor had completely failed to check inflation and become a party of the rich and influential.

Another BJYM office-bearer Rajesh Pal said the Centre was entirely to blame for the inflation.

Yahspal Negi, Bijendra Thapliyal, Deepak Dhyani and Rahul Sonkar were among the protesters.

Cong-BJP blame game on in Haridwar
Tribune News Service

Haridwar, January 31
War of words between the district units of the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) continues with condemnation of the policies of each others governments at the Centre and the state becoming routine here.

The Congress lashes out at the state BJP-led government for its failure to properly govern the state on all fronts. Terming the government policies as anti-public, city Congress chief OP Chauhan points out that despite the BJP changing the face of the Chief Minister from BC Khanduri to Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, the working and policies of the BJP government haven’t changed.

“Changing the mask isn’t any solution, but the BJP believes so. Its policies are the same and people are dissatisfied with it whether they are in any part of Uttarakhand be it in Pauri Garhwal, Chamoli, Almora, Udham Singh Nagar or Haridwar districts,” said Chauhan.

Cornering the state government on the Maha Kumbh projects, the Congress leader remarked that though a month had passed since the commencement of the mega fair, the Kumbh works had not yet been completed.

Anju Dwivedi, head of the women’s cell of the Congress, blamed the state government for delayed Kumbh works, which were inconveniencing local people, pilgrims and tourists.

“Despite the Chief Minister going on record that this time the Kumbh projects are the best both in terms of quality and quantity, yet these are still going on and several of works will be completed by the next month only when half of the Kumbh tenure will be over. Also completed works have already shown signs of use of poor quality material and this is a sheer misuse of the Kumbh funds allocated by the Central government,” said Dwivedi.

On the other hand, the BJP responds quite aggressively. From burning effigies to turning down Opposition parties claims over the Kumbh works, BJP leaders are aggressively blaming the Congress party.

District BJP head Om Prakash Jamdagni refutes the charges levelled against the state government over the Maha Kumbh projects. He cites the permanent and temporary works being carried out for the first time for this Maha Kumbh.

“There is a drastic change in the infrastructure development in the city. From bridges and roads to beautification projects, Haridwar bears a different look. Also in terms of funds, projects and quality, the state government has not left any stone unturned to provide the best of the facilities to the people coming for the mega fair,” said Jamdagni.

The Congress is too blamed for its failure to control the rising prices.

“For the poor, lower and middle classes, the Congress-led UPA government has made life miserable. Though in the elections it said ‘Congress ka haath aam admi ke sath’, it seems its hand is only with the higher strata of society,” said Sanjana Sharma, head of the BJP Mahil Morcha.

Dehradun, January 31
Though the stamp of khadi alone is enough to add credibility to the quality of any product, in response to the marketing forces, the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has also begun training beneficiaries in acquiring quality control certifications like ISO-9000 and Agmark.

Those setting up units under the Prime Minister Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) in Uttarakhand are also being given training in quality control, product and design development so that their finished products are able to compete in the market.

Addressing a press conference here today, state Director of the KVIC Karnail Singh said, “Though the name khadi alone continues to inspire trust, we have begun intensive programmes in design development and quality control for our beneficiaries and newer methods of packaging the products are being incorporated”.

He said at least five beneficiaries in Uttarakhand were undergoing training in product design and quality control.

He said under the programme, the KVIC had set itself an ambition target of establishing 1,300 units for the period 2009-10, which would provide employment to around 15,000 persons at an investment of Rs 55 crore.

“The state nodal office (KVIC) has so far sanctioned 850 projects till December 2009. We had received 25,000 projects and out of these, 2,000 projects were selected and 850 projects have been sanctioned. The banks have been asked to settle the issue of the projects within 30 days, so that the beneficiaries know where they stand,” he said.

Financial assistance to the tune of Rs 25 lakh is provided to those desirous of setting up units. Assessment of projects is made by the technical staff of the KVIC. So far 3,000 units have been established under the REGP alone.

To provide skill upgrading for beneficiaries, multi-discipline training centres have been set at Haldwani and Dehradun, where training is given to traditional artists and entrepreneurs desirous of skill enhancement.

In addition, training centres for the Entrepreneur Development Programme (EDP) under the PMEGP have been established with the khadi institutions.

The KVIC will also shortly come up with a state-level directory of entrepreneurs.

Khadi fair from today

To provide marketing opportunity to entrepreneurs, the state office of the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), Ministry of MSME, is organising a khadi fair at the Parade Ground here from February 1 to 15.

A total of 60 units from Uttarakhand and 125 units from different parts of the country will participate in the fair.

The state office is hoping to achieve a sales target of Rs 1.5-5 crore during the ensuing period.

KVIC state Director Karnail Singh said all participants would be provided free boarding and lodging for the 15 days of the fair and in addition the participants from the Northeastern states would be provided free transportation facilities.

“Participants from Uttarakhand are expected to get a good market exposure and processed food items like honey, handicrafts and handlooms will be on sale,” said Singh.

Having gathered intelligence about the plan of women activists, the police held them hostage in a residence for more than an hour and later let them off when the Chief Minister had left the area.

The women wanted to register their protest against the failure of the state government to address issues of women statehood activists.

An eco-tourism lodge in the close vicinity of the Corbett Park has bagged outstanding ranking for its commitment to sustainability and environmental concerns. An international organisation, Travel Operators for Tigers (TOFT), judged as many as 50 eco-lodges near tiger reserves of the country before zeroing in on Camp Forktail, a privately owned tent camp on the borders of the park in Uttarakhand.

The other to share the outstanding rank include Taj Safaris’ new upmarket lodges, Baghvan, on the borders of the Pench National Park in Madhya Pradesh.

According to J Matthews, founding Chairman, TOFT, more lodges across India were inclined to be involved in the campaign and get themselves audited. He said the main aim for rankings on the part of the TOFT campaign was to allow the travel community to choose the best practice suppliers in India’s most visited tiger reserves.

TOFT constitutes over 180 Indian and international travel operators and service providers and is catalysed in response to the huge decline in the tiger population in India in 2005.

TOFT seeks to advocate and support a more sustainable way both with the Wildlife Travel Community, alongside NGOs, and the tiger reserve authorities.

Significantly, eco-tourism continues to high on priority of the Uttarakhand forest authorities, who have recently gone for a renovation of its old rest houses and lodges to attract tourists.
