New Delhi, January 31
A Delhi court has convicted three men of killing a shop owner two years ago and has awarded them with life imprisonment. The judgement came yesterday.

On October 11, 2008, the three— Birender Singh, Manish and Satish Kumar— killed mobile shop owner Sunil Anand over a mobile phone recharge of Rs 100. The three had reportedly come to Anand’s shop to get their phone recharged. After the phone was recharged, they refused to pay the amount. When Anand insisted them to pay, they threatened of burning him alive.

In the night when Anand was going home, the three reportedly overpowered him and set him ablaze. On November 13, 2008, Anand succumbed to his injuries.

Taking in note the victim’s statement that he had made before dying, additional sessions judge Nivedita Anil Sharma slapped a fine of Rs 1 lakh on each convict.

The court directed that the money collected as fine be paid as compensation to the deceased’ family.

Taking note of the statements of Anand’s parents who had seen the three men threatening their son, Sharma said, “There is sufficient evidence against the accused. Their counsel’s arguments that they are being implicated are baseless.”

Seeking strict action against the three, public prosecutor Vinod Sharma sought death penalty for them.

New Delhi, January 31
A man dressed in suit and speaking fluent British accent claiming to be a member of British Embassy diplomatic staff deceived a journalist last evening on pretext of getting him placed in the South Asian unit of British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

The journalist Venkatesh G.V. (52) was clever enough not to part with the cash demanded by the accused, Alison Brown. However, he ended up paying Rs 750 for Brown’s lunch and another Rs 300 as the taxi fare.

Venkatesh working with a vernacular newspaper in Bangalore said Brown met him yesterday morning at New Delhi Railway Station.

“I had gone to the railway station to receive a friend. The train was late and I was waiting on platform number 12. A man, Alison Brown, who said he worked with the British Embassy sat beside me and started talking,” said Venkatesh.

They talked for three hours. Venkatesh said the man appeared highly educated, confident and spoke perfect English.

Brown offered to get Venkatesh placed in the BBC if he could come with him to the British Embassy right then. Venkatesh agreed and Brown hired a taxi. He asked the driver to take them to the embassy. On the route, Brown coaxed Venkatesh to have lunch and the latter paid the bill of Rs 750.

“We stopped outside Nigerian Embassy and Brown asked me to give him Rs 2,000 as some form needed to be filled. When I protested, he demanded Rs 1,000. But when I said I would come along he asked me to wait in the taxi and left. He did not return even after two hours,” said Venkatesh.

The taxi driver was demanding Rs 400. Venkatesh ended up paying Rs 300.

Venkatesh, unsure of which police station to approach, came to the Police Headquarters today and lodged a complaint. Brown’s phone is coming switched off.

Chetan surprises fans at fair

Tribune News Service

New Delhi, January 31
The visitors at the stall of Rupa publication in the World Book Fair were taken by surprise on Sunday when they saw the author Chetan Bhagat interacting and posing with the crowd.

The author, who holds a special place among the youngsters, was humbly trying to entertain the requests of his fans—from giving autograph to shaking hands and posing for photographs.

Anil Sharma had tears rolling down while he told Chetan how he succeeded in scoring high grade after deriving motivation from one of his books. “I have not slept for the last two days as I was waiting for the day to meet you,” said Anil.

As all his books focus on the lifestyle and mental make of youngsters, Chetan said that he likes writing on the youth as it is only the young mind which needs a transformation.

“I like writing on the youth and as of now not concentrating on other areas,” said Chetan.

After the success of ‘Five Point Someone’ and the movie ‘3 idiots’ based on its adaptation, Chetan said that he is all set for another Bollywood venture. This time, the film would be based on his book called, ‘Three Mistakes of My Life’.

Chetan said that the director, actor and singer Farhan Akhar has shown interest in directing a movie based on this book. However, he said that there would be no room for any controversy this time as happened during the release of ‘3 idiots’ based on this book, ‘Five Point Someone’.

The movie had led to a wordy war between the filmmakers and the author.

Delhi Diary
Put it in your pipe and smoke it!

The Delhi police nabs drug addicts mostly in the morning and it is not because they all disappear at night! The reason behind it is simple common sense that guides police in our country more than any rule book. Spilling the beans, a cop said arresting an addict and keeping him in lock-up for a night is a big nuisance, fraught with danger.

An addict has to be given his quota of drugs irrespective of his place of lodging. And if he is in a police station, it is the job of cops to arrange for dope. If they do not, the addict will let out shrieks, fall sick and even die or end his life. And that is too much of a risk. So to do away with complications, cops prefer arresting them in day and produce them in the court immediately.

But the question is how does he survive in jail, where he might have to remain for days and weeks? Well, that’s a piece for another diary.

Teasers learn their lesson

At a theatre festival organized by the National School of Drama (NSD) recently, an actor received a special round of applause for her handling of a bunch of ruffians.

It so happened that a group of boys in the audience kept passing indecent comments and smirking as she said her dialogues.

As the plotline reached its climax, the narrator (girl) in the play supposedly had to talk to the audience. She got so conscious of the boys staring and smirking at her that she quickly improvised her lines and asked them that ultimate cliché: “Kyun Bhaisaab? Aaapke ghar mein ma behan nai hai? Kyun ghoor rahe hain? (Don’t you have mother and sister at your house? Why are you staring at me?)”

As it happened, the act worked and the embarrassed boys slunk out of the auditorium. Ironically, the play was centered on sexual harassment.

Shoppers set to make merry

Markets these days are full of sales and shopkeepers say the discount season will extend to February, which is full of cute events like Valentine’s Day, Chocolate Day, Rose Day, Hugs Day and so on. For people who need any small reason to shop, this is the best time of the year.

These days resonate especially with the youth and they also make for the majority among shoppers. So for traders it’s a kind of double bonanza.

Keeping an eye on these events, the markets in Lajpat Nagar, Sarojini Nagar, Greater Kailash and Janpath are overflowing with merchandise. So for all you ever looking forward to special discounts, this is the time of the year!

CWG: The sands are running out

As the Commonwealth Games in Delhi approach, the tension is intensifying as the organisers and the government appear to be running against deadlines. Even Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has periodically acknowledged that things are not going as desired.

She admitted as much at the recent inauguration of Ludlow Castle Wrestling stadium.

“It will be difficult to complete the CWG works in the next eight months and we need to work hard. But I believe we will complete the work smoothly.”

Officials say the task on hand is so huge that there is always a chance of things going awry and the CM is well aware of this. Everybody involved with the Games is keeping their fingers crossed.

Delhi ahead in fashion

A recent congregation of fashion retailers revealed that Delhi girls and women love to buy the most high-end designer products, beating their counterparts in other cities. Out of hundreds of outlets across the country, Delhi’s South Extension showroom of a multinational fashion house records maximum sales of its apparel brand. Their average sale is one garment a minute!

Parmindar Singh

Noida, January 31
Noida Authority has directed the cellular service providers to submit the application for permission along with necessary documents by February 2.

Additional chief executive officer P.N. Bothom said, “Those who cannot submit application can give an affidavit and seek extension of time.”

There are around 400 mobile phone towers in Noida City. Fifty per cent towers are in residential areas, 30 per cent in commercial areas and 20 per cent in industrial areas. Only 188 have submitted applications so far. The Authority has sealed 193 towers till date. The mobile services in the city were affected today also.

As per the tower policy of Authority, the service provider and building allottee have to submit a joint application for permission.

Four conditions were to be fulfilled by the service provider: structural stability certificate of the tower, RWA no-objection certificate, architects’ certificate about load-bearing capacity of the building and fee of Rs 1 lakh. The fee is for 10-year period or the period of agreement of service provider with the allottee, whichever is earlier.

The service provider has to submit necessary permission from the fire department, Pollution Control Board or other relevant authorities.

Three conditions have to be fulfilled by the building owner.

These are building completion certificate, no-dues from Authority and there should not be any litigation on that property.

Federation of Noida Residents Welfare Association, senior vice-president, A.N.Dhawan, said, “The association had written to the Authority around five months ago, requesting them to shift the cellular towers from residential houses to commercial, industrial or institutional areas. We also asked the Authority to cancel the lease deed of houses who had installed cellular towers.”
