Dengue Danger
Jalandhar, September 18 Taking the arrival of dengue cases informally, the IMA and private hospitals in the district have not responded to a letter issued by the civil surgeon asking them to inform him about the number of suspected and positive dengue cases which
come to them daily. Talking to The Tribune, civil surgeon Dr S.S. Walia claimed that he had written to the IMA and all the private hospitals in and around the city to submit to him the information regarding suspected dengue and dengue positive cases registered with them over the past two weeks. “Only one or two private hospitals have been submitting their reports. A majority of the hospitals have not responded to the letter as yet. I am going to take strong note of it,” claimed Dr Walia. The civil surgeon said he would write to the state government for taking legal action against those who defied the directions. Sources claim that only selected private hospitals have the facility to treat dengue patients clinically, while a majority of them are just concentrating on administrating medicines for fever. Punjab IMA president Dr Yash Sharma claimed that they would definitely inform the government as well as the district health authorities in case there was confirmation of the outbreak of dengue in the district. He claimed that there was no epidemic as such and the number of suspected dengue cases was limited. |

Kandi farmers need govt’s attention: Khanna
Hoshiarpur, September 18 He said rich counterparts of these farmers in other areas of Punjab were getting free power for their tubewells for irrigation purposes, whereas the small farmers of the Kandi area were paying for irrigating their small land holdings. These poor farmers could not get their own tube-wells installed. Keeping in view their financial position, the state government should consider their case sympatheticcally. “I will take up the issue with Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal during his visit to Mahilpur on September 20,” Khanna said. |

Health club idea clicks in rural Pb
Ramgarh (Kapurthala), September 18 The efforts are showing results, as several adolescents and the teenaged young men in the Bholath constituency can today be noticed visiting the newly built health clubs in their respective villages. These clubs are a fascination for the village youth as they have been equipped with multi-purpose health machines. There are about 130 villages in the Bholath constituency and 125 villages have got their clubs registered with the Youth Services Department of the state government. About 100 of these villages are well-equipped with the latest multi-purpose health machines and other required equipment. The objective is to motivate rural youth to take care of their health and stay away from drugs. MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira said: “Many people of my constituency are settled abroad. When they came to know about the health clubs they also wanted to participate. NRI interest in these activities is increasing. They feel happy to see the people of their village becoming healthy. I hope this programme will spread all over Punjab and India. This is a kind of youth mobilisation promoting a positive approach towards life. This also helps them stay away from social evils like drugs,” he added. Youngsters are not required to pay any fee for membership. Each club has an instructor. Khaira appreciated the help and cooperation extended by local NRIs and Dharampal Sabharwal, MP. During the last assembly elections, Khaira had promised to distribute health machines among all the 130 villages of his constituency to create health awareness among the youth and focus their energy towards building health and fitness. He described the initiative as part of his “Be healthy” campaign. He is also planning to arrange a good diet for the members of the health clubs. He would also organise “health festivals” annually where inter-village tournaments would be held to generate a sense of competition among them. “Youngsters in the rest of Punjab would follow the path shown by the youth of the Bholath constituency to maintain good health and shun drugs,” said Jatinder Pal Singh, a local resident of the Ramgarh village. “It’s a good concept. Earlier, youngsters had to go to cities to practise, it’s a good thing that now it is available here. People practise both in the morning and the evening. It’s the best way for
them to keep away from drugs and stay healthy,” said Paramjeet Singh, a club member. “Earlier, I had to go to another health club, situated nearly 10 km from Ramgarh. But the new health club has cheered health enthusiasts like me,” said Gurwinder Singh, one local youth. — ANI |
