3 held for credit card thefts
New Delhi, July 25 Four credit cards, many fake ID proofs, bank pass books, cheque books, PAN cards prepared by computers have been recovered from the accused. The modus operandi of the accused was to pose as authorised agents of a bank and take the existing credit card of the applicant on the pretext of taking an impression for verification. The Rohini police was hunting for the accused after a man called Adarsh Khanna complained of being robbed of his credit card by them. Adarsh had applied for a credit card in Kotak Mahindra Bank. He received a call from the bank regarding the verification of his original documents and a person posing as bank representative namely Arun came to him. On the pretext of verifying the documents, Arun took Adarsh’s ICICI Bank credit card to take an impression of it. But he replaced the original credit card with a fake credit card and returned it. However, by the time Arun could realise that his credit card had been replaced by a fake one, Arun had vanished. Adarsh then immediately called up the customer care section of the ICICI Bank and reported the matter. But, even before the bank could take any precautionary action, he received a message on his mobile phone that his credit card had been used for Rs 30,000. During investigation, the police found that the accused had used Adarsh’s credit card to buy two mobile phones and 2 shirts from the Big Bazar shop at Inder Lok Metro station. A manhunt was launched to catch them, but they had stopped using their mobile phone that they had used to contact Adarsh. They had also left their rented accommodation. The accused have accepted that they use to pose as authorised agents of various banks and have cheated many people by changing their credit cards with fake credit cards. In this case, Vipin posed as Arun and Ghanshyam was standing outside the house for any help. Hazari alias Rahul use to operate from the office and their other accomplices would call people, posing as agents of different bank for credit cards, loans scheme etc. Investigation of the case is being carried out by SI Varun Dalal and search for three other associates who are absconding, is on. |

Govt fails to tell SC how it plans to solve power crisis
New Delhi, July 25 The counsel for the government, submitted before a bench comprising chief justice K. G. Balakrishnan and justices Dalveer Bhandari and H.S. Bedi that power is not available in Delhi and other states are not willing to sell power to Delhi because they are themselves facing similar shortage. Counsel for the government, however, submitted that the government would take all possible steps to augment the generation of power in Delhi. Amicus-curiae Ranjit Kumar stated that people in Delhi are being subjected to long power cuts, but the affidavit of the government is silent on the issue of solving the current power crisis in Delhi. However, it claims that people in Delhi will be in better condition on

AIIMS blood bank short of rare groups
New Delhi, July 25 The RTI reply sought by Uday Foundation for Congenital Defects and Rare Blood Groups, an NGO, shows that the blood bank has a registered database of only 100 people with rare blood groups till June 1, 2008. It includes six donors of AB Negative blood group, 29 of A Negative, 33 of B Negative, 32 of O Negative and doesn’t even have a single donor of Bombay blood group– a rare genotype that is not AB, A, B or O group. During an emergency, with only four to six per cent of India having rare blood types, arranging blood units of Rh negatives is indeed a difficult task, and still, the blood bank doesn’t have any preset target for voluntary blood donation. Incidentally, the blood bank deals with 300 cases of blood transfusion daily, including OPD and Emergency patients, out of which 25-35 are cases that demand Rh negatives, and it reportedly receives 150-200 units of blood collection every day, which includes only 1-2 units of rare blood types. Even more startling is that the body, since its inception, maintains all its records manually, and updates them only once in a year in January. Dr Kabita
Chatterjee, the officer incharge of AIIMS blood bank said, “We don’t have any specific target, and generally, it is a 100 per cent target, but due to lack of awareness among people, that is never met. As far as the upgradation of the database maintenance is concerned, the director of State Blood Transfusion Council is the right person to talk to.” Dr Bharat Singh, director of the State Blood Transfusion Council, Govt. of
NCT, Delhi, said that a proposal with an estimated cost of Rs 6 lakh was sent to the ministry of health and family welfare, Delhi and director of AIIMS in 2002, followed by a reminder in 2003, but the case was not pursued further as it evoked a silent response. It was said that estimated cost was more than institute’s allocated budget.
With the number of road accidents increasing, people need immediate medical attention. Their problem gets compounded if their blood type is rare and a single manual updating of donors’ database can be of least immediate help during that time. In such a scenario, it is very perplexing as to how do needy people, relying upon the country’s premier public hospital’s blood pool, from outside the city manage. During emergencies or calamities if the real purpose of the blood bank is to be efficiently met, then an up-to-date registry of all donors with rare blood groups has to be maintained online along with building a registration site. This would ensure timely blood donation to needy people. Requests made by NGOs to the health ministry in this regard have been of no avail. |

At least 30 people were injured including three police officials in the violence last night during which a police post, one police jeep and two other vehicles were set on fire and three Uttar Pradesh Roadways buses damaged. The clashes took place following a dispute over construction of a wall in a locality dominated by the minority community. According to the police, some people were constructing a place of worship in Khanna Nagar close to Tronica City on the Delhi –Saharnpur road at noon. It is a disputed land, which belongs to a land management committee of the area and so the police tried to stop the construction. But, when the police failed to persuade the people, SDM Vishal Singh tried to convince them to hold talks with administration to sort out the matter. Five persons were detained while rest of them went away. Later in the evening, a mob reached Loni police station and after talking with the authorities got the five detained persons freed. But, then suddenly the mob turned violent and tried to set the police post on fire. According to district magistrate Deepak Agarwal, the mob then moved to Nathora police post and set it on fire. The rioters who were joined by Shiva devotees going to Haridwar blocked traffic for over two hours in the area. The authorities had to summon additional forces from Ghaziabad, Noida and Bagpat to control the situation, which could be brought under control only by 9.45 pm. |
