Jalandhar, July 16
The PTU-CET counselling is drawing to a close, but as many as ten colleges in Punjab are yet to fill up a single seat, while several others have recorded few registrations.

Four engineering, five pharmacy and an architecture college that are yet to get a single student include Bhutta College of Engineering and Technology, Ludhiana, CT Institute of Pharmacy, Jalandhar, Doaba College of Pharmacy, Kharar, Global College of Pharmacy, Anandpur Sahib, Guru Gobind Singh College of Engineering and Technology, Talwandi Sabo, Indo-Global College of Engineering, Chandigarh, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Pharmacy College, Patti, Swami Parmanand College of Engineering and Technology, Dera Bassi, VMS College of Pharmacy, Batala, and Indo Global College of Architecture, Chandigarh.

The architecture course being run in engineering colleges seems to have a bad fate. While the Chitkara Institute of Engineering, Rajpura, managed to fill only two of its 22 seats, Giani Zail Singh College of Engineering and Technology, Bathinda, Institute of Engineering and Technology, Bhaddal, Lovely Institute of technology, Phagwara and RIMT Institute of Engineering and Technology, Mandi Gobindgarh, have not yet been able to get a single student.

The same course being run in Guru Nanak Dev University, however, had a better response with 15 of the 23 seats getting filled up.

Four colleges have managed to fill just a single seat, most of them running pharmacy courses. These are Amar Shaheed Baba Ajit Singh Jhujjar Singh Memorial College of Pharmacy, Ropar, Baba Isher Singh College of Pharmacy, Moga, Baba Kuma Singh College of Engineering and Technology, Amritsar, and Swami Vivekanand College of Pharmacy, Banur.

Even Baba Hira Singh Bhattal College of Engineering and Technology established in the constituency of Deputy Chief Minister, Ms Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, last year has got a poor response with just seven out of 194 seats getting filled.

Some of the colleges that have managed to fill up all their seats include Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College, Fatehgarh Sahib, Chandigarh College of Pharmacy, Landran, Chandigarh Engineering College, Landran, Chitkara Institute of Engineering and Technology, Rajpura, Chitkara College of Pharmacy, Rajpura, Regional Campuses of Guru Nanak Dev University in Jalandhar and Gurdaspur, Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Ludhiana, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, and Punjabi University, Patiala. The local DAVIET has just nine seats vacant in Civil Engineering, while the Lovely Institute has 26 seats unfilled in Electronics and Electrical Engineering. Seats of all other streams in the two colleges have been filled up.

Phagwara, July 16
The supply of safe drinking water, proper disposal of human excreta, food and personal hygiene were the essential ways of prevention and control of water-borne diseases, advocated the health authorities here today. The Health Department authorities urged the office-bearers of NGOs and civic bodies of the sub-division to coordinate with the department in preparation for a war against these diseases and help reduce the risk of outbreak during the approaching monsoon period.

Dr Maninderjit Singh, Civil Surgeon, called upon the heads of Phagwara Nagar Council and the panchayats to ensure proper sanitation and the supply of safe drinking water so that the risk of outbreak of water-borne diseases was minimised.

“Since the civic bodies are responsible for the supply of potable water, sewage disposal, the heads should act well in time and check leakage and contamination of drinking water,” said the authorities.

“Creating awareness among the masses through educative and media means was the only alternative to check the outbreak of these diseases,” said the Civil Surgeon.

The health authorities appealed to the NGOs to coordinate with the Health Department officials and civic authorities of their respective areas so that the chances of the outbreak of the disease were minimised. They alerted the staff at hospitals and dispensaries of the area to report cases of incipient diseases and monitor the treatment.

Jalandhar, July 16
Private doctors of Jalandhar have urged the Punjab government to facilitate the early completion of the Saheed Beant Singh Memorial Medical College in the city, the construction of which has been hanging fire for a couple of years due to slow pace of work.

Over 100 private practitioners and owners of hospitals, led by the Indian Medical Association (IMA, Punjab), today urged the Punjab government to ensure the early completion of the medical college on the grounds that the initiation of medical services at the institute would result in better and cheaper medical care to residents of the Doaba region.

Interestingly, the foundation stone of the college by laid twice—first by late Chief Minister Mr Beant Singh and then by the former Chief Minister Mr Parkash Singh Badal during their respective terms. The institute, it was learnt, was to start its operations by 2004, but the project could not take off at scheduled time, primarily due to delayed construction coupled with other factors.

Doctor members of the IMA’s Punjab unit, which organised a state level seminar on drug de-addiction here today, gave a memorandum to Punjab Local Bodies Minister Chaudhary Jagjit Singh, the chief guest, demanding that the institute be made operational at the earliest.

“This will be the first medical college in Doaba. So it’s the need of the hour to facilitate its early completion,” Dr G.S. Gill and Dr Yash Sharma, IMA’s president and secretary, respectively said.

Several old age and widow pension-holders from Khera village have accused the sarpanch and panchs not handing them over their full pension amount.

Talking to The Tribune, Ms Bimla Devi, Ms Parkasho and Ms Kartaro along with other pension-holders alleged that the Khera village sarpanch Surjit Kumar, panches Chaman Lal and Mohan Lal, while distributing their monthly pensions, had deducted an amount of Rs 50 each. They allegedly got the thumb impressions of the pension-holders testifying that they had received the full amount.“Pension is the only source of our livelihood, and even then we are not spared,” the pension-holders alleged.
