MP, MLAs walk out of planning board meeting

Alleging discrimination at the hands of Congress-led government in the state, four MLAs and and Member Parliament, Ludhiana, belonging to the Shiromani Akali Dal walked out of the meeting of the District Planning and Development Board (DPDB) chaired by Mr Lal Singh Rural Development and Panchayat, Irrigation and Power Minister, here today.

Five of snatchers’ gang arrested
Mandi Ahmedgarh, June 21
The Sudhar police has nabbed five members of a notorious gang involved in snatching valuables from crowded areas of Ludhiana city, while the kingpin escaped. Jewellery and mobile phones worth Rs 1.5 lakh have been recovered from the gangsters.

Case against advocates: inquiry ordered
Ludhiana, June 21
The city police today put on hold the arrest of all six accused, including four senior advocates, in the Bala Mittal suicide case and directed SP City-I Rakesh Aggarwal to conduct an inquiry into the allegations levelled against the accused in the suicide note.

A vow at father’s death fulfilled

Bt cotton not harmful, farmers told
Ludhiana, June 21
At a seminar on cotton at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Bathinda, PAU Director, Extension Education, S.S.Gill said today that farmers should not fall prey to false propaganda that Bt cotton cultivation was harmful to humans. On the contrary in countries like the USA Bt cotton is being grown for the past two decades without any report of health hazards.

The general body meeting of the Indian Society for Agricultural Development and Policy today elected new office-bearers and also decided to reduce their term of office from three years to two years. Newly elected office-bearers, thus, will be in position from today till June 20, 2008.

Farm graduates get training

A batch of 21 students of College of Agriculture completed their 10-day field training programme today. The training was organised by Syngenta India Ltd., private company, which exposed the students to real life problems, challenges and opportunities while working in the field in the private sector and dealing with agro-chemicals.

Drive to check food adulteration
Ludhiana, June 21
The Health Department has stepped up its drive to check adulteration in foodstuff and maintain desirable level of cleanliness in the eating joints in the district. As a part of the ongoing campaign, samples of milk products, edible oils, aerated water, bakery products and other eatables from dhabas and restaurants were taken by teams of health officials from different parts of the city and other towns.

 

Traffic police flouts rules
Jagraon, June 21
The local traffic police which had earlier ignored the directions of the Supreme Court and constructed a traffic police picket on the divider of the Ludhiana-Ferozepore road near the roundabout at tehsil chowk, has now laid a big shed in front of the same. They have even gone to the extent to getting electricity supply illegally for this picket from the electric pole installed on the divider.
