Police personnel from these district had started arriving at the site of firing. The IG, Ambala Range and the Commissioner, Ambala Division, also reached the village late evening. The trouble began this morning when residents of Badsikri village and 700-800 sadhus from nearby reached the village and organised a bhandara (community kitchen) at the site of 22 acres of land on the outskirts of the village . This land was under occupation of six families of Gosain community. This a land was given to them long ago for cultivation. Earlier, village people had given it to the Dera of Ganesh Dass. The village Panchayat had asked the cultivators to pay some money to the Dera of Baba Ganesh Dass for cultivating the land. The Gosains sold three acres of this land and were planning to sell more land. Villagers had been objecting to this act of Gosains. They wanted the land should be given back to the Dera head as they had failed to keep their promise made to the village panchayat. It is learnt that villagers and sadhus had been trying to take possession of this land in favour of the Dera. As the matter was in the knowledge of the district administration that there could be trouble on the occasion of bhandara, the police was posted early morning in the village. The administration being apprehensive about the move of the villagers and after the getting information about the mood of the gathering the Deputy Commissioner and the SSP reached the spot. They asked villagers to resolve the matter amicably and even suggested to attach this land under Section 145 CrPc to maintain status quo. But the crowd which had put up a shamiana on the site for langar became violent and started setting on fire fodder stocks and soon moved to houses occupied by Gosains and set them also on fire. The police evacuated the families to a safer place before the houses were set on fire. As the police chased the crowd and resorted to lathi charge, the crowd threw stones at the police. The SP said that some shots were also fired on police and stones hit the SP and Deputy Commissioner. When crowd refused to withdraw the police used rubber bullets on the crowd. Industry to face 6 to 8 hours power cuts
Chandigarh, June 21 An official spokesman said here today that due to less availability of power and an increase in its demand by the agriculture sector due to paddy sowing, it had been decided to temporarily impose six to eight hours power cut on the industries and from five to six hours on urban consumers. The Haryana consumers had faced a severe power shortage in the winter, which mentally prepared them for a worsened situation in the summer. However, the Power Department managed to make arrangements for additional power for the summer well in time. This was a pleasant surprise for the consumers. However, now the availability of electricity has reduced due to less generation in the hydroelectric projects located in Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttaranchal. The spokesman said due to an abrupt fall in temperature snow melting had reduced considerably, leading to a reduced in flow of water in the hydel projects. He said this had resulted in drastic reduction in the state’s share of 30 lakh units in the Bakhra Beas Management Board, 23 lakh units in the SJVN (NHPC), 26 lakh units in the Nathpa Jakhri Project and 8 lakh units in the Mullana Project. To add to the woes of the utilities, a minor technical fault in the eighth unit of the Panipat Thermal Power Station resulted in additional reduction in power availability by 55 lakh units daily. He stated that the frequency of the northern grid varied around 49 Htz. Most of the states in the northern region had been forced to regulate the power supply. The spokesman said the power cuts would be withdrawn as soon as the availability of electricity increases. |

Pvt colleges’ PMET notice illegal: Sampat
Hisar, June 21 Endorsing a news report published in The Tribune (dated June 17) regarding the matter, Prof Sampat Singh demanded that the proposed pre-medical test announced by the Association of Self-Financing Medical Colleges of Haryana be annulled. “Conducting a fresh test after a state-level pre-medical entrance exam has been conducted is illegal and apparently aimed at serving the vested financial interests of the private medical and dental colleges’ authorities,” he alleged. The former minister maintained that while the private medical and dental institutes were making a mockery of the system, the state government seemed to have no control over the situation. Talking to The Tribune, Prof Sampat Singh pointed out that the association had issued admission notice for 85 per cent seats on all-India basis, whereas there was no mention of the seats reserved for the residents of Haryana. Condemning the stance adopted by the state government in this regard, the INLD leader demanded that the proposed exam be cancelled and admissions made on the basis of the exam conducted by MDU. Prof Sampat Singh remarked that the proposed move would lead to technical as well as legal ramifications as the Governor’s notification authorising MDU to conduct the test had not been rescinded or withdrawn. In a notification issued on March 14, 2006, the Haryana Government had declared MDU,
Rohtak, as the competent authority to conduct the entrance examination for admission to MBBS, BDS, BAMS and BHMS courses in the medical and dental colleges across the state for year 2006. Following this, MDU conducted the common entrance examination on June 6 and promptly declared the result the next day. However, on June 12, the Association of Self-Financing Medical Colleges of Haryana issued an admission notice through a fresh entrance test to be conducted on July 9. The association maintains that the issuance or the admission notice and conduct of the proposed test had been approved by the State Admission Committee of the Haryana Government as per Supreme Court directions. |

INLD leaders jealous, says Kiran Choudhary
Chandigarh, June 21 In a statement issued here today Mrs Choudhary said the INLD leadership was opposing the SEZ because it was jealous of the fact that such a large project had come to the state when the Congress was in power and not in their time. She said when the INLD was in power, no big entrepreneur was coming to Haryana because the credibility of the then political leadership was a big zero. After the Congress came to power under the leadership of Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, big industrial houses from other states as well as from abroad had made a beeline for Haryana. Mrs Choudhary said it did not behove the INLD leaders to allege irregularities in the SEZ project because the corrupt practices was a routine when their party was in power. She said during the INLD Government an agreement was signed with two builders to set up the Gurgaon Recreation Park, for which four acres of land was given for only Rs 8 crore while its market value was many times more. The Haryana State Industries Development Corporation (HSIDC) was given an equity of 15 per cent for Rs 1.5 crore. However, when the present government came into power, it reviewed the project after which the HSIDC was able to get much better terms for itself. The government would have got a higher price for the land but for the fact that the INLD government had bound its hands by entering into an agreement with the builders. Mrs Choudhary said in addition the corporation would get 42,000 sq. ft. covered area free of which, the rent of which would fetch it at least Rs 1.60 crore per month. She said this single instance was an indication of what the INLD leaders had been doing when they were in power. She said with this track record these leaders had no right to criticise the others. |
