Now, EC notice to Amar Singh
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, March 10
Even before the leaders of the Samajwadi Party could get a breather from the Election Commission’s recommendation for the disqualification of Jaya Bachchan from the Rajya Sabha for holding an “office of profit”, the poll panel today issued notice to the party’s general secretary and member of House of Elders Amar Singh on similar grounds.

The poll panel issued notice to Mr Amar Singh on a petition seeking his disqualification from the Rajya Sabha on the ground that “he holds the post of Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Development Council”, an office of profit. The SP leader has been asked to reply to the notice by March 31.

Chief Election Commissioner B.B. Tandon told reporters as per constitutional provisions, under Article 102 and 103, a petition (against Mr Amar Singh) had been made to the President, who had referred it to the commission for its opinion.

“The Commission has to act according to the provisions of the Constitution. The commission has to follow the legal and constitutional provisions and send the necessary opinion to the President and that process has started,” he said.
