3 get life term for murder
Ludhiana, March 10
The Additional Sessions Judge, Mr Gurbir Singh, has sentenced three persons to rigorous life imprisonment on the charge of murdering Abdul Rahim in the local Jama Masjid in 2002. While four persons were acquitted for charges could not be proved against them.

10 booked for kidnapping youth
Khanna, March 10
The police has registered a case against 10 persons for allegedly kidnapping a youth of Katihar village. The victim, Ranjit Singh, son of Mohinder Singh, has been admitted to the local Civil Hospital for treatment.

90 cases settled at Labour Lok Adalat

The District Legal Services Authority organised a labour lok adalat under the supervision of Mr A.K. Singla, Additional Sessions Judge-cum-Presiding Officer of the Labour Court, at District Courts Complex here today.

Punishment to teacher mild: PTA
Ludhiana, March 10
Bhajnik Singh, president Parents Teachers' Association, Senior Secondary School, Jagraon, has appreciated that an inquiry was conducted by inquiry officer Gurdeep Kaur against mathematics teacher of the school Gurdeep Singh. He was found guilty and the Education Department has stopped his promotion for three years as punishment. He has also been transferred to Senior Secondary School, Mansa.

Octroi contract auctioned amid protest
Mandi Ahmedgarh, March 10
Despite a strong protest by traders of the town and surrounding areas, the Local Body authorities have auctioned the contract for the collection of octroi within limits of Municipal Council here. The contract was auctioned for Rs 2.70 crore, under the supervision of Mr T. P. S. Phulka, Deputy Director, Local Bodies at Patiala, yesterday.

Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) will organise an alumni meet at Dumra Auditorium, DMCH, on April 9. Rural elders malnourished, says PAU study
Ludhiana, March 10
A study by Punjab Agricultural University has revealed skewed diet patterns in elders in the 60 plus bracket and belonging to a lower socio-economic strata. The sample group comprised elderly couples, particularly in villages. Their daily intake of cereals, pulses and vegetables was much less than prescribed by dieticians and nutritionists.

Focus on farm sparks hopes for jobless
Ludhiana, March 10
The focus on agriculture has rekindled the hope among the jobless youth with PAU stepping into organising crash courses in allied farm avocations. Under the auspices of C-pyte, one-month course in post-harvest care of fruits and vegetables was inaugurated by Director of Extension Education, Dr S. S. Gill, here on Thursday. The participants are the village unemployed youth.

Need to revitalise farm engineering study stressed

Deliberations to reinvent agricultural engineering education in the country began at Punjab Agricultural University here today. The Deans’ Committee chairman, Dr S.L. Mehta, gave an overview of the problems and needs of the prevailing system. He is the Vice-Chancellor of the Maharana Partap University of Agriculture and Technology, Udaipur.

PAU wants to use grant as corpus fund
Ludhiana, March 10
Punjab Agricultural University is hoping that the special grant of Rs 100 crore announced in the Union Budget would be provided to it in a single go so that it is able to utilise it as a corpus fund on which it can earn an average income of Rs 8 crore every year, which can then be used for various research activities.

Californian experts visit PAU

A six-member delegation from the California Agricultural Leadership Foundation visited PAU here today. In an interaction with the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. K. S. Aulakh, and Deans, Directors and officers of the university, the delegation evinced keen interest in the agricultural research being carried out at the university.

Tiny tots of Whizkid, Creche 'n' Toddlers Club organised a recipe contest on the school premises here today. Children and their mothers were invited for the contest. Kids helped their mothers in preparing sandwiches, bhel puri, salad dressing, cakes 'n' puddings, etc.

Manjinder tops paper-reading contest
Doraha, March 10
The English Literary Society of Guru Nanak National College, Doraha, organised a paper-reading contest on Thursday. Members of the society participated in the contest. As many as 12 speakers spoke on topics such as ''Is our earth a real paradise?'' ''Brain Drain'', ''Emprovement of women'' and ''Literature is the mirror of society''.

Health camps on every Saturday
Sahnewal, March 10
The Health Department has launched a health awareness drive in Giaspura, Sherpur, Daba, Kanganwal and Jugiana areas of the city. Dr S. S. Dhir, SHO, Sahnewal, said 35 persons had been engaged on a daily wage of Rs 300 for administering immunisation doses to the children of migrant labour in these areas on every Saturday.

Disclosure of HIV status can help check AIDS

A campaign conducted by the Ludhiana Citizens’ Health Council (LCHC) here has led to the belief that besides generating awareness among the industrial workers about HIV/AIDS prevention and practices of safe sex, the disclosure of HIV status of the affected person can become an effective tool for its prevention.

All arrangements have been finalised for the inaugural edition of the All-India Guru Gobind Singh Gold Cup Hockey Tournament slated to be held here at the Prithipal Singh astro-turf stadium of Punjab Agricultural University from March 12 to 16.

Daljeet Kaur, a final year student of computer engineering, Satguru Ram Singh Government Girls Polytechnic College, was adjudged best athlete while the overall trophy was bagged by this section during the annual athletics meet of the college here today. Mr R. C. Chopra, Director, Small Industries Services Institute, was the chief guest.
