SSP attacked; bank looted of Rs 16.47 lakh

Srinagar, November 22
Militants made an attempt on the life of a senior police officer, strangulated one person and looted about Rs 17 lakh from a bank in Jammu and Kashmir over night, an official spokesman said today.

He said a group of militants threw a hand grenade towards the main gate of the J and K Bank branch at Zaina Kadal in the downtown city when cashier Mehrajuddin was leaving for Sadar Treasury for depositing cash.

He said the cashier and two brothers — Sajjad and Adil — besides a girl, Dilafroza, were injured in the blast.

The gunmen later fled away with Rs 16.47 lakh. The injured were admitted to hospital.

The police has launched a hunt to nab the looters who also fired a number of shots in the air while fleeing.

The spokesman said Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ashiq Hussain Bukhari of Anantnag district was on the way to Srinagar when militants attacked his vehicle with automatic weapons at Kadalbal Pampore, 12 km from here, on the highway.

The police said a wireless operator, Rafiq Ahmad, and Constable Bashir Ahmad were injured in the attack. Militants later escaped under cover of darkness.

Mr Bukhari escaped unhurt in the attack, the police said.

The spokesman said militants kidnapped and later strangulated to death Abdul Majid Bhat at Ashminder Pulwama in South Kashmir this morning.

The Jammu and Kashmir police arrested a militant of Pakistan-based Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT), recovering from him one hand grenade at Bhaderwah last night. — UNI
