Nitish promises good governance
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, November 22
Bihar's would-be Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today outlined his priorities with good governance taking a prime place in his government.

But he declined to say whether he would have a BJP Deputy Chief Minister or spell his approach on corruption charges against RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav.

"We have not discussed it (having a deputy chief minister). The challenge before us was the elections. The JD(U) and the BJP together campaigned in the elections and we projected ourselves as a unified force which was liked by the people and they reposed faith in us," Mr Kumar said when asked to comment on the possibility of appointing a Deputy Chief Minister.

Avoiding questions on corruption charges against his friend-turned-foe Lalu Prasad Yadav, the JD(U) leader said, "Today is a day of victory. We will talk about these things later".

On whether he would make "tainted" MLAs ministers, the JD (U) leader evaded a direct reply, smilingly saying, "Even before I have been elected the leader (of NDA legislature party), you have declared me Chief Minister".

He said the date of formation of the government, its size and drawing up a Common Minimum Programme (CMP) would be finalised within a day or two.

To questions on providing reservation to Dalit Muslims, he said all said promises made in the election manifesto would be kept.

To a question whether the NDA would still demand removal of state Governor Buta Singh, Mr Kumar said, "These are all old matters now".

Complimenting the Election Commission for conducting an "impartial" and "free" election, he said, "There was a myth that free elections were not possible in Bihar and the EC has destroyed that myth. We will also destroy another myth that there can be no governance in Bihar."

Describing the NDA's sweep in Bihar as a "victory of the people," he said it would work to fulfil their ambitions and provide "good governance."

Right from the morning, Mr Kumar's supporters and well-wishers made a bee-line to his 22, Akbar Road residence.

Mr Kumar said the top priority of his government would be to bring back the vehicle of development on tracks.

"People voted against misgovernance, injustice... in a democracy not to allow an alliance with the majority of MLAs to form government also did not go down well with the people and the verdict is a reflection of their anger," he said referring to the dissolution of the state Assembly following the February elections. Meanwhile, JD (U) leader Sharad Yadav said that the result of Bihar poll would have a profound impact on the UPA coalition at the Centre as it would fall apart in a year.
