Pranayama “beneficial for heart patients”
Ludhiana, November 22 Presenting a paper on ‘Effect of Pranayama on Haemodynamic in Cardiac Surgical Patients’ at the recently held Yoga and Naturopathy Conference-2005 at Dharamasthala (Karnataka), he remarked that “pranayama” was found to be of great help for speedy recovery after cardiac surgery. Interacting with mediapersons here, he said yoga as an ancient system of relaxation, exercise and healing with origins in Indian philosophy had been described as the union of mind, body, and spirit. According to Dr Rawat, the findings of his study were based on the observations made in 60 odd-patients who had undergone cardiac surgery. The patients were explained about the exercises a day prior to surgery. After 24 hours of removal of ventilator, the patients were asked to perform “pranayama” while the haemodynamic parameters were recorded as baseline, during exercises and after exercises. These patients showed positive and healthy impact of pranayama on cardiac surgical patients. The belief that those having undergone heart surgery were at a risk of haemodynamic instability while performing “pranayama” were also dispelled during the study, he added. |
