Abu Salem, Monica extradited — finally
New Delhi, November 11
In the first major success in an extradition case, one of India’s most wanted fugitive, Abu Salem Qayyum Ansari, was extradited to India today along with his girlfriend Monica Bedi, ending a prolonged three-year extradition battle with Portugal.

The return of Abu Salem from Lisbon has sent the residents into a shell. This infamous native of this mofussil town,25 km from Azamgarh district, has brought them more notoriety than they can handle. They clearly do not welcome the sudden focus of the media.

Terms of reference of Pathak probe notified
New Delhi, November 11
The government today issued a notification on the terms and reference of the Justice R. S. Pathak inquiry “Authority” to probe the allegations in Paul Volcker report against the Congress and former External Affairs Minister K. Natwar Singh in the oil-for-food scam, vesting the single-member probe body with the powers of a civil court under Section 11 of the Commission of Inquiry Act.

Soft borders “have to be part” of political process
Chandigarh, November 11
Soft borders cannot be a stand-alone development. They have to be part of a political process spanning intra, inter and regional entities. Stating this in his talk, From fencing to soft borders: issues options and problems, Dr Suba Chandran, Assistant Director of the Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies, New Delhi, said that soft borders cannot be bilateral, but should be regional and extra-regional.

Kidney patient faces hurdles to visit Pak for post-operative care
Amritsar, November 11
Kulwant Singh (58), with an amputated leg, who underwent as many as 34 operations in India and the USA, had to go to Pakistan for kidney transplantation as there is a ban on getting kidney of unrelated persons in India. After getting a fresh lease of life at Lahore’s Ahsan Mumtaj Hospital, he, however, finds it difficult to get proper post-operative care in India.
