City students shine in Class X CBSE examination
Panchkula’s Prince Pahwa is region’s topper with 97.4%

City students gave a commendable performance in the Class X CBSE examination with over 100 students scoring above 90 per cent though many other schools are still to compile their results.

Prince Pahwa’s first taste of victory

It was the first taste of victory for Prince who, till now, had been relegated to the second position. Prince Pahwa, a student of Manav Mangal School, Sector 11, Panchkula, created a history of sorts by topping the Class X examination of Central Board of Secondary Education in the region, scoring 97.4 per cent.

Kuljit Kaur tops in Class X exam
Mohali, May 24
Kuljit Kaur of Sant Isher Singh Public School here topped in the CBSE Class X examination scoring 94.6 per cent marks. Abhijeet Singh of Shivalik Public School stood second with 94.4 per cent marks.

Mother of 3 held for husband’s murder

It was mad love for another man that drove a mother of three daughters (two of whom are married) to get her intoxicated husband killed by her paramour. In this act the paramour was assisted by the woman and also another friend. The deceased used to object to the relations of his wife with her paramour.

Human trafficking on the rise in region

With declining sex ratio in northern states, human trafficking, especially cross-border trafficking from Bangladesh and Nepal, is on the rise. Girls from these countries are being brought to Mewat region in Haryana and in western Uttar Pradesh on the pretext of job opportunities, and sold off to men who cannot find a suitable bride.

Tehelka case: Time sought to obtain arrest warrants

The prosecution in the general court martial trying Brig Iqbal Singh for professional impropriety in the Tehelka case today sought time to obtain arrest warrants for one of its witness, Lieut-Col V P Syal (retd), who had been declared hostile earlier and failed to appear before the court today.

SC shoots down pleas on PUDA flats
Mohali, May 24
The Supreme Court has dismissed 31 special leave petitions (SLPs) filed by allottees of MIG flats in Sector 70 against Punjab Urban Planning and Development Authority (PUDA). According to a press note issued by the authority today, PUDA had allotted 784 MIG (super) flats in Sector 70.

Divya Dutta Objection over film’s title led to curiosity, says Divya Dutta
Actress Divya Dutta, said today that film ‘Jo Bole So Nihaal’ which has frayed the feelings of a section of Sikhs had created more curiosity for viewers. She said the objection over the title of the film could be one of the reasons which led to widespread protests. In Shayam Benegal’s ‘Subhash Chandra Bose’ she plays a role very close to her heart — Ila Bose, a niece of Subhash Chandra Bose. When she saw the picture of Ila Bose, she was surprised to find that she resembled a lot with her. “We know a lot about Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, but we know a little about Neta ji. When I was kid I was very curious to know a lot of things about him. I think one must watch this movie to know about him”, she said.

Play portrays womanhood in all its manifestations
The Chandigarh School of drama staged a Punjabi play “Aurat banaam Aurat bnaam Aurat” in association with the local Department of Public Relations and Cultural affairs at Tagore Theatre today. The play sculpted by the thespian Gursharan Singh, based on some true incidents offered an insight into the profound depth of “womanhood&” in all its manifestations and recovers an explosive truth that the idealistic exaltation of “goddess” bestowed on woman in Indian culture, in fact does not accord with the reality.

Kolkata-based fashion designer Rita Khurana has come with an exclusive summer collection. Her collections will be on display for two-day at Hotel Aroma, Sector 22, from tomorrow. Her latest collection includes salwar kameez, kurtis, skirts and wraprounds. The garments have been embellished with gotta patti, stone and metal works, block printing and Zardosi.

Anti-tobacco awareness drive
Chandigarh, May 24
A week-long awareness and sensitisation programme being organised by the Department of Psychiatry, PGI, is beginning tomorrow. As part of the event, an awareness programme is being organised for class IV employees of the PGI and will be addressed by the Director, PGI, Dr S.K. Jindal.

Ashish topples Rajesh in Khattar memorial snooker
Chandigarh, May 24
Ashish Bargodia today toppled Rajesh Jain in a straight sets 79-11 and 66-28 in the first round best-of-three snooker tie in the ongoing Fifth Saurabh Khattar Memorial Billiards and Snooker Championship at the Chandigarh Club here. In the second match of the day it was a close contest between Karan Bir Singh and Mukesh Chopra in the first set. Mukesh easily pocketed the second set but lost the third set and the game went in favour of Karan Bir Singh. The score read as 50-35, 45-79, 62-45.

Ball badminton coaching camp
Chandigarh, May 24
A 15-day ball badminton coaching camp for boys and girls will start tomorrow. The boys and girls camps will be held at Manav Mangal School and Dev Samaj School at Sector 21 here, respectively. Eight players for each category, will be selected for the 25th Sub-Junior National Ball Badminton Championship to be held in Chandigarh from June 9 to 12. The camp will conclude on June 8.
