3,300 die as tidal waves hit southern coast
2,000 dead in Tamil Nadu, 1,000 in Andaman and Nicobar
Chennai/Hyderabad, December 26
Around 3,300 persons, including 2,000 in Tamil Nadu and 1,000 in Andaman and Nicobar, were today killed and several hundreds reported missing when high tidal waves triggered by a massive earthquake in Indonesia lashed the southern Indian coast.

PM assures support to affected states
New Delhi, December 26
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today spoke to the chief ministers of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Pondicherry and the Lt-Governor of Andamans and Nicobar and assured them of Centre’s assistance.

Armed forces launch rescue operation in coastal areas
New Delhi, December 26
The Air Force and the Navy today pressed transport aircraft, helicopters and warships to undertake massive rescue and relief operations all along the country’s eastern coastline and isolated islands to search for dead and trapped persons after earthquake and sea tides hit the region.

Sonia asks Andhra, Kerala CMs to provide relief

Congress President Sonia Gandhi today asked the chief ministers of Andhra Pradesh and Kerala to take immediate steps to provide relief to the people hit by tidal waves after an earthquake.

Taking a stern view of the defacement of public property in Patna by the Rashtriya Janata Dal for the proposed rally, the full meeting of the Election Commission today directed the Bihar government to fix the responsibility for the violation of the Act, recover the cost from the political party and remove all hoardings posters and other material by December 30.
