Five killed as buses collide

Jalandhar, November 25
As many as five persons were killed and over 30 injured, some of them seriously, when two Jammu and Kashmir Transport Corporation buses collided at Pathankot Chowk here today.

The accident occurred at around 8.30 a.m. when the buses from Delhi to Jammu collided while trying to overtake each other under the Pathankot bypass bridge. Five persons were killed on the spot. The injured have been admitted to the Civil Hospital and some private hospitals. The condition of some of them was stated to be critical.

As soon as the buses collided, the driver of one of the buses lost control and crushed into rickshaw pullers along the road before the bus rammed into a pillar of the bridge.

The deceased have been identified as the driver, Ramesh Chander, rickshaw pullers Vindeshwari Sharma (65), Mithun (18) and Santokh and Surinder Kumar, a migrant labourer.

According to the police, a case under Sections 304, 337, 338, 427 and 279, IPC, has been registered. The police maintained that the drivers were in a hurry to reach their destination. The driver of other bus, Mohan Lal, however, said the accident occurred due to brake failure.
