Gang of robbers busted, 5 held

At least two or three men, posing as eunuchs, have descended the area in order to earn their livelihood. According to informed sources, they have chosen an area around Chakki railway station for their stay and make-up. Ramoo of adjoining Himachal Pradesh is said to be their so-called group leader.

The Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) chief and former MP, Mr Simranjit Singh Mann, has been invited by the Department of Political Science of Berkeley University in California to speak on “Status of Sikh minority vis a vis Indian Constitution” on November 1.

Major fire at Kharar power sub-station
Kharar, October 23
A major fire broke out at the 132 KV grid sub-station at Khanpur village here today disrupting power supply to a number of villages and Kharar town. The fire broke out around 3.16 p.m. It took about an hour for fire brigade officials to bring the flames under control. The area was engulfed in thick toxic smoke which led to a feeling of suffocation for those around the site.

PVC awardee Joginder Singh remembered

A commemoration ceremony was organised here today to pay homage to late Sub Joginder Singh, Param Vir Chakra. Joginder Singh of the Sikh Regiment’s 1st battalion was conferred with the nation’s highest military award, posthumously, for making the supreme sacrifice while leading his platoon in the defence of Tongpen La, ahead to Tawang in NEFA during the 1962 Chinese aggression.

Issuing notice of motion, a Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court has stayed the operation of an order placing under suspension Punjabi University’s Professor of Economics in Correspondence Studies Dr Partap Singh.

Patwari held for graft
Fatehgarh Sahib, October 23
The district Vigilance Department today arrested Patwari Baljinder Kumar for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 from war widow Gurdev Kaur for registering land on her name. The police has recovered the money and registered a case.

Three arrested for smuggling opium
Bathinda, October 23
The district police today achieved a major success in its anti-smuggling operation when it arrested three persons and recovered 10 kg of opium from them.
