Yatra a damp squib, says Hooda
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, March 25
Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Leader of the Opposition in the Haryana Assembly, today said the Bharat Uday Yatra of the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr L K Advani, should be more appropriately called “Advani Uday Yatra”. The yatra, however, had failed to evoke any response in Haryana and elsewhere in the country and was a damp squib compared to the mass contact programme launched by Ms Sonia Gandhi, Congress President, he said in a statement here.

Mr Hooda added that while Mr Advani had been glibly talking about the progress made by the country during the NDA regime, he seemed to have forgotten incidents like attack by terrorists on Parliament House, attack on the Akshardham temple and the highjacking of the Indian Airlines plane by terrorists from Kathmandu.

The Vajpayee regime was also responsible for a host of anti-people measures, including weakening of the public distribution system and handing over profit making public sector corporations to foreign multinationals. The stint of the NDA government had been also marked by large number of scams like the coffin scam, bribery in defence deals exposed by Tehelka, the UTI scam and the like.

The statement said that it was at the time of Congress regimes that people of India could hold their heads high due to the dynamic leadership of Nehru and Ms Indira Gandhi who made India a key player in the nonaligned movement. After the emergence of the BJP, the Indians had dropped their heads in shame due to the fascist policies being followed by the saffron party, it said.

Cong names after Sonia’s return to Delhi
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, March 25
Mr Ashok Buwaniwala, spokesman of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee, today said the names of the party candidates for the Lok Sabha elections would be announced after March 27 when Ms Sonia Gandhi would return to Delhi after campaigning.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr Buwaniwala said people of Haryana were furious with the Om Prakash Chautala regime. The PCC spokesman alleged that while Mr Chautala was claiming that he had been touring foreign countries to mobilise investment for the state, in reality the Haryana Chief Minister was visiting foreign shores to explore the possibility of investing in foreign countries wealth amassed by him by unfair means. Mr Buwaniwala claimed that Congress would reap benefit from the popular resentment against Chautala as Congress candidates would win all the 10 Lok Sabha seats of Haryana.

He also added that in Haryana as well as in other parts of the country, the Bharat Uday Yatra of the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr L K Advani had cut a sorry figure in comparison to the success of the public contact programme launched by the Congress President, Ms Sonia Gandhi.

Cong yet to declare Ambala candidate
Our Correspondent

Ambala, March 25
Election activities in the Ambala parliamentary constituency has started picking up. Except for the Congress, all parties have declared their candidates for this reserved seat. The BJP, INLD, BSP and Ekta Shakti have already started the campaign while the race for ticket is still on in the Congress.

The District Congress Committees Rural and Urban have sent the list of candidates to the pradesh Congress committee and the high command.

The candidates who are in the race for ticket include former ministers Phool Chand Mulana and Kripa Ram Punia, former Union Minister Shailja, Mr Aman Kumar Nagra and Mr Raj Kumar Balmiki.

According to sources, except for Ms Shailja all prospective candidates are considered close to the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee chief, Mr Bhajan Lal. Mr Mulana is the front runner. Mr Aman Nagra is also a strong contender for the ticket and has some influences on the SC/BC vote bank in Ambala.

Mr Punia is also trying hard to get ticket. He will be a new face for the electorate if he does get the ticket. Some of Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s supporters, including former minister Nirmal Singh have been convincing Ms Shailja to contest from here this time.

Internal fighting in the Congress will be a problem for the candidates. Recently the supporters of Mr Bhajan Lal had organised a rally in Naggal against the DCC (rural) president, Mr Nirmal Singh, who has a stronghold in some of the Assembly constituencies in Ambala district. Mr Nirmal Singh and his supporters too criticise Mr Bhajan Lal in rallies.

Vinny, a 14-year-old son of a local goldsmith, was allegedly murdered yesterday by a local juice-seller and his accomplices following a minor dispute over payment of a bottle of milk at Pehowa in Kurukshetra district, 25 km from here.

According to police sources, the boy went out of his house in the afternoon yesterday to play with his friends but did not return. In the evening, an FIR was lodged at the local police station.
