HUDA may extend application dates

Panchkula, March 25
Following the grant of stay on the development of Sectors 2 and 6 of the Mansa Devi Complex by the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) may extend the last date for submitting application forms for the allotment of plots in the Mansa Devi Complex.

Cop killed as gun goes off
Mohali, March 25
A 39-year-old Punjab police constable, Baljinder Singh, posted as a security guard with a local businessman, was killed here this morning when he accidentally shot himself while cleaning his gun.

Ram Temple no poll issue, says Advani
Chandigarh, March 25
The Deputy Prime Minister, Mr L. K. Advani, today expressed the confidence that a negotiated settlement of the dispute over Ram Janambhoomi temple at Ayodhya would be reached between the Muslim community and the new Vajpayee government at the Centre after the poll.

Bharat Uday Yatra enters Punjab
Mohali, March 25
The Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Lal Krishan Advani, stopped for less than 10 minutes on the Phase VI main road here this morning, as part of his Bharat Uday Yatra. Mr Advani entered Mohali at 10 am, over 40 minutes behind schedule, reaching the point where he was welcomed by local BJP and SAD leaders with garlands and petal showers.

Move to revive Punwire

There is a move to revive the public sector unit Punwire, lying closed for over four years now. According to a report submitted by an industrialist to the core committee constituted to look into the possibility of Punwire’s revival, the company can be revived with its present infrastructure and staff strength.

Protest over short notice on fee hike

An order of the UT Education Department directing the authorities of GGDSD College, Sector 32, to give in writing that the college had charged the difference in the amount of the rolled back tuition fee and admission fee, today attracted protest from the students.

DAV College convocation held
Chandigarh, March 25
The 43rd convocation of DAV College, Chandigarh, was held on the premises of the college here today. The DPI( Colleges), Mr Dilip Kumar, was the chief guest. In his address, he called upon the graduates and post-graduates to gear up for the challenges ahead.

NCC cadets honoured
Chandigarh, March 25
Cadets of the Chandigarh NCC Group who had excelled in training during the 2003-04 academic session were honoured at a ceremony organised here today. Cash awards of Rs 3,000 and Rs 2,000 each were given to the best cadet and second best cadet, respectively.

Politics takes toll on translation students

Teachers’ politics is giving anxious moments to a handful of students from the Department of Hindi, Panjab University. These students, doing their Diploma in Translation from the department, have been asked to complain in writing against a senior professor before they can have their translated notes checked by another teacher.

More schools to be involved in CBSE quiz

A ‘hot’ film opens today
‘‘H
AWAS — An unusual Love Story’’ has been pitched as a bold film of woman’s lust, with a host of newcomers. The film has “Kaliyon Ka Chaman...” fame Meghna Naidu, model-turned-actor Shawar Ali, Tarun Arora, Varun Razdan and Mukesh Tiwari in the cast. It will be released today at Batra, Chandigarh and K.C. Panchkula. Shot in Dubai and Sharjah, it is inspired by Hollywood’s ‘‘Fatal Attraction’’ and ‘‘Unfaithful’’. The film is written and directed by Karan Razdan.

Parnita is Ladies Golf champion
Chandigarh, March 25
A fine two-over card of 74, the best of tournament, saw Parnita Garewal clinch the Grewal Salver Trophy in the 12th Chandigarh Ladies Open Golf Championship which concluded on the lush course of the Chandigarh Golf Club today. Parnita maintained her lead from day one. And her three-day aggregate of 231 was several strokes better than second-placed Kanika Minocha.

DAV-36 eves, DAV-10 boys lift trophies
Chandigarh, March 25
MCM DAV College for Women, Sector 36, and DAV College, Sector 10, bagged the overall championship in women and men category, respectively, in the annual sports function of Panjab University held today in the Gymnasium Hall of the campus. MCM eves collected 420.5 points while DAV men got 605 points to bag the Shadilal trophy.

Rs 1.22 cr for better power supply in Mohali
Mohali, March 25
To provide better power supply to residents of the town as well as to the industrial sector here, the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) has augmented the system at a cost of about Rs 1.22 crore. Apart from this augmentation, another scheme to improve the 11 kv distribution system at a cost of Rs 6 crore is also in the pipeline.
