NDA govt has failed
people, says CPI Mandi, December 24 Modalities of the stir would be drawn up at a state-level meeting of the CPI at Hamirpur on February 14-15 next. He said a joint front of the like-minded secular parties against communal forces would be formed to avoid division of votes in the Lok Sabha elections. On the tapes released by Mr Katwal, he said these had exposed the involvement of both the BJP and the Congress indulging in nepotism. Supporting the agitation launched by the Kisan Sabha in its Chachiot Valley, the CPI leader lamented that interests of farmers and workers were not being safeguarded. He said the government was wasting money on unproductive ventures. Politically motivated transfers were making matters worse, he added. The CPI leader demanded a judicial inquiry into various scams during the BJP rule like that of bitumen scandals in Health Department, recruitment in the Subordinate Services Selection Board
(SSSB) etc. |
Bhota residents observe
bandh Bhota (Hamirpur), December 24 A bandh was also observed in the town over the incident. Even the hotels, tea stalls and shops of green grocers remained closed. The local residents have demanded action against the hospital staff who allegedly did not provide timely medical help to the person who ultimately succumbed to his injuries on the main road. The residents condemned the attitude of the hospital management. However, Brig, Ranjeet Singh (retd), the chief administrator of the hospital, clarified that there was no fault of the hospital management. He said no injured person had been brought to the hospital. He alleged that some persons were trying to tarnish the image of the hospital. He said the hospital management had decided to close the hospital for the new patients till fresh orders were received from the authorities at Beas in Punjab. |
Another student beaten
up Mandi, December 24 Jai Chand, teacher, allegedly beat up Rohit so much that both his hands were injured. The father of the child, Mr Ami Chand, has reported the matter to the police. He showed swollen hands of his son to the police and the reporters. The police took the boy to a hospital and got an x-ray of his hands done. A case would be registered after receiving the medical report, the police said. Corporal punishment has become common in schools due to lenient attitude of officials of the Education Department towards erring teachers. On September 16 this year an 11-year-old boy Ravi was beaten up by a PTI of Namleri High School in Jogindernagar sub-division. When a deputation of villagers lead by Panchayat pradhan Rajesh Chauhan, went to the school, they found the erring teacher absent from the school. Villagers have sent telegrams to the Chief Minister, the Education Minister and the Director of the Education Department for action in the matter. |
Snow
or no, Shimla favourite for X’mas fest Shimla, December 24 There have been a few spells of
rain over the past one month, but snowfall has so far eluded the “Queen
of Hills”. Dark clouds built over the sky as the day progressed,
raising hopes of a white Christmas. However, they vanished by the
evening, much to the disappointment of tourists who have already
arrived at the hill resort. It matters little whether it snows or not. Of late, it has become a fashion to celebrate Christmas and New Year eve in the hills, says Mr Umesh Akre, vice-president of the Himachal Pradesh Hotel Association. He said most of the tourists prefer to book accommodation in advance. There could be some decline in the tourist rush compared to last year as both Christmas and New Year fall in the middle of the week. Advance bookings indicate that there would be good occupancy in hotels from December 25 and it would be almost 100 per cent on New Year eve. As usual, the Himachal Tourist Development Corporation and private hoteliers have organised a gala dance and dine night show with live music to lure the holiday revellers. They have also come out with special packages. Besides, Shimla gala nites are being organised in Manali, Dharamsala, Chamba and Dalhousie. The package rates, including board and lodging, range from Rs 500 per couple to Rs 16,500 per couple depending on the class of hotel. Traffic regulation and checking hooliganism have been the main problem during the celebrations. The police will deploy about 300 additional jawans to regulate traffic and maintain law and order in the state Capital, said Mr S.R. Mardi, Deputy Inspector- General of Police. The strength of traffic police would be doubled and they would be on duty for an extended period. No road- side parking of vehicles would be allowed on the Circular Road. The portion of restricted road from the Kennedy House chowk to Indian Institute of Advanced Study would be thrown open for parking. Besides men in uniform, plainclothes policemen would be deployed on The Mall and the Ridge to keep an eye on eveteasers and those indulging in rowdyism. A snowfall around New Year extends the winter tourist season by a week or fortnight, depending on the quantum of snow. In the absence of snow, ice-skating is a major attraction. However, ice skating sessions are not being held regularly because of cloudy skies. So far, only 16 sessions have been possible during this season. |
