Deve Gowda blames BJP, Congress for rot Rohtak, December 24 Talking to reporter she said it would be wrong to assume that these gains signified a countrywide political trend and that the BJP could repeat this performance in the next Lok Sabha elections. At the national level several factors influenced the voters. Therefore, there was no question of the BJP getting any advantage from these gains. Blaming the BJP and the Congress for the rot in the country, he said, his party was prepared to help non-Congress and non-BJP political parties in the next parliamentary poll. Asked whether there were any moves afoot to revive a third front, he said CPM leaders Harkishen Singh Surjeet and Jyoti Basu had made sincere attempts in this direction but nothing concrete emerged. At present, there was no such move. He said all parties would need the support of regional parties in the next poll. While the BJP already had alliances in place, the Congress too after the recent bitter experience was not averse to the idea. He expressed surprise over the Congress President Sonia Gandhi’s silence over the Telgi scam. He said she should have asked the Karnataka Chief Minister to hand over the probe to the CBI as that was where the scam had originated. Talking about the NDA partners he said they had lost their voices. As an example, he said, Ms Mamata Banerjee who used to be a “terror” in Parliament had not been heard of since she rejoined the NDA. The former Prime Minister said contrary to claims by both the BJP and the Congress, poverty in the country had increased. No economic reforms worth the mention had been initiated to alleviate poverty. Rather, liberalisation only had added to the problem of the Indian farmers who were unable to meet international competition. Mr Deve Gowda said the farmers’ interests had been overlooked to the extent that the interest rates for farm loans were much higher than those of house or consumer loans. However, both the BJP and the Congress were not interested in removing the discrepancies. Later, Mr Deve Gowda addressed a public meeting at Meham near here. |
