India overcome Nigeria
Amardeep Bhattal
Tribune News Service

Hyderabad, October 26
Hosts India overwhelmed Nigeria 5-3 in men’s hockey to ensure a berth in the semifinals of first Afro-Asian Games at the Gachibowli hockey stadium here last night. Also moving into the last four were Pakistan who overpowered Egypt 3-1. The-India Pakistan clash tomorrow will determine the toppers from pool ‘B’ who will avoid pool ‘A’ winners Korea in the semifinals.

Utilising his bench strength to the optimum, coach Rajinder Singh fielded the young and energetic Harpal Singh, the promising left back from the Namdhari Vidhyak Jatha, Sirsa, who justified his inclusion with effective tackling. However, it was midfielder Len Aiyappa who turned out to be the hero with his lethal drag flicks and accounted for two goals.

The Indians played to a plan and wave after wave of attacks kept Nigeria under pressure. In the 23rd minute skipper Dilip Tirkey opened the account with his powerful hit off a short corner taken by Deepak Thakur. Three minutes later Deepak Thakur scored the second goal after Prabhjot put him in possession inside the ‘D’. The move in fact originated from full back Harpal Singh, whose powerful hit saw Prabhjot making a neat interception before racing towards the rival ‘D’.

Three minutes before the interval, forward Sandeep Michael latched on to the ball inside the ‘D’ before aimimg a hit which found the roof of the net (3-0).

In the second half, Nigeria forced three penalty corners in quick succession which went waste. But against the run of play, Nigeria’s Segun Admisoro reduced the margin, hitting into the roof of the net from the left (1-3).

A penalty corner for India in the 56th minute saw Len Aiyappa attempting an excellent drag flick which brooked no resistance (4-1). However, Nigeria’s Admisoro again cut the deficit to 2-4 when he beat the Indian custodian with a perfect hit from the right. The match was tantalisingly poised when off a fast counter-attack, Nigeria’s Auwolu Lamido found the target with a solo effort (3-4).

A penalty corner earned by India in the 69th minute was utilised by Len Aiyappa intelligently and his powerful carpet drive was bang on target (5-3).

Earlier, Pakistan overcame a gritty Egypt 3-1 after leading by 1-0 at half time. Rehan Butt’s field goal in the ninth minute enabled Pakistan to forge ahead while Shakeel Abassi and Ghazanfar Ali scored one goal each in quick succession soon after resumption to buttress the lead. The fighting Egyptians managed to pull one back through Mohamed Sameh Metwally four minutes before the long hooter to gain some consolation. It was Pakistan’s second victory after the 4-3 win over Nigeria in their opening tie. Korea, who beat South Africa 2-0, also registered their second win in the championship yesterday. Hyo Sik Yoo put the Koreans ahead in the 23rd minute with a fine effort while Woon Koon Yeo converted a penalty corner in the 55th minute to clinch the issue in favour of his team.

Malaysia, who routed Ghana 5-0, owed their success to Kuhan Shanmuganathan (2), Ismail Abu, Muhammad Amin Rahim, and Tajol Rosli Mohamad. The score at half-time was 1-0.

Eves rout Kazakhstan
Tribune News Service

Hyderabad, October 26
India stormed into the semifinals in women's hockey, mauling Kazakhstan 9-0 in the Afro-Asian Games at the Gachibowli hockey stadium here tonight.

Jyoti Kulu(3), Sanggai Chanu (2), Adline Kerketta (2),Masira Surin and Surinder Kaur scored withconsummate ease to send the visitors crashing out of contention and the win tonight boosted India's tally to six points from two victories.

As goalkeepeing coach Negi had said yesterday, the weak opponents proved easy fodder for the Indian girls and once the floodgates opened opened, there was no stopping them. The scoring commenced in the fourth minute when Chanu converted a penalty corner which was followed by Surin's field goal. Jyoti Kulu made it 3-0 with a field goal while the fourth came off Chanu's stick in the 40th minute. Jyoti Kulu added the fifth off a short corner while Adline's field goal soon after made it 6-0. Three field goals in the last 10 minutes by Adline, Surinder Kaur and Jyoti Kulu completed the rout.

Such was the ferocity of the Indian attacks that the Kazakhstan team were completely at the receiving end. Manipur's Sanggai Chanu and skipper Suraj Lata Devi, both employees of Western Railway, tore the Kazakhstan defence to shreds and the long hooter in the end seemed to have come as a big relief to the visitors.

Earlier, Korea and China split points with a 1-1 draw. After A Rum Woo put Korea ahead by converting a short corner in the 61st minute, China's Jiayan Cheng restored parity through a penalty stroke five minutes from the end to snatch one point. In other matches Kenya beat Nigeria 2-1 while South Africa trounced Ghana 6-0.  —TNS

India meet Pakistan today
Tribune News Service

Hyderabad, October 26
It’s a battle that every hockey fan is awaiting keenly. As India take on Pakistan in their last league engagement of the first Afro-Asian Games in the eighth encounter of the year here tomorrow, the dice is loaded against the visitors. India’s performance in the two league matches against Egypt and Nigeria has certainly given Rajinder Singh’s team an edge though Pakistan’s ability to hit bounce back cannot be underestimated.

Of the seven matches played between the two countries this year, India have won three while Pakistan have tasted success twice. India beat Pakistan in the Four-Nation Tournament Down Under and again in a league match of the Champions Trophy at Amstelveen 7-4. In the Asia Cup final India had won 4-2.

However, what must be remembered is that now both the teams are without a couple of stars who played at Amstelveen and Kuala Lumpur. Nevertheless, the effective combination displayed by the two here points to another engrossing battle as newcomers like India’s Harpal Singh will get an opportunity to cement their berths in the national squad, a view expressed by coach Rajinder Singh.

Pakistan’s stand-in Dutch coach Roelant Oltmans also views the championship as a Test for the players. “Tactically Pakistan are a good side but there is always scope for improvement,” Oltmans told The Tribune last evening as his team went through their paces.

In the ongoing Afro-Asian Games, both teams have beaten Egypt and Nigeria but India’s goal average is superior as compared to that of Pakistan. India have scored 10 goals while conceding four which proves that the forwardline comprising Gagan Ajit Singh, Deepak Thakur, and Prabhjot Singh, ably supported by midfielders like Len Aiyappa, can rip apart the rival defence on their day. The absence of Pakistan’s penalty corner specialist Sohail Abbas is another factor which may tilt the scales in India’s favour.

Sports a tradition in Saqlain’s family
Tribune News Service

Hyderabad, October 26
For Pakistan hockey star Muhammad Saqlain, sports is a family tradition. Two of his brothers, Tanvir-ul Hasnain, and Zia Subtain, are international footballers. Tanvir was the capatin when Pakistan won the gold in the SAF Games at Islamabad and Dhaka. Another brother, Imamuddin, is a national record holder in pole vault having represented Pakistan in the 1986 Asian Games.

Saqlain himself as centre-half is a key member of the Pakistan hockey team having played in five editions of the Champions Trophy, two Asia Cups, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, besides the 10th World Cup at Kuala Lumpur. Sportsmanship and the spirit of camaraderie are thus deeply embedded in their psyche, and has stood the test under trying circumstances.

Talking to The Tribune after Pakistan’s victory over Egypt here yesterday, he denied that he harboured any hatred or ill-will towards Indians. “What happened in the Champions Trophy was a reacton in the heat of the moment.” Incidentally, when Pakistan were locked in a grim battle against India at Amstelveen, the tie was interrupted for a few minutes and star Indian forward Gagan Ajit Singh was heckled and pushed by Saqlain after he sustained a nose injury.

“Gagan is my friend. I had no intention to hurt him,” he said adding that it all happened in the heat of the moment. “We talk to each other on the telephone and exchange gifts. Whenever there is a India-Pakistan match and national sentiments take precedence, minor skirmishes do occur but soon after the match everything is forgotten,” he said.

Gagan Ajit too agrees. Shortly before India took on Nigeria yesterday, he revealed that Saqlain was in his room in the morning. “We are good friends outside the hockey field,” he said. Son of Haji Nawabuddin, Saqlain belongs to Lahore and speaks fluent Punjabi. After passing his inter-mediate from M-A-O College, Lahore, Saqlain joined Allied Bank where he is currently working as Sports Officer. Two of his brothers, Rafiuddin and Raza Kunain, are engineers. He also has one sister. Yesterday he played his 150th match and has to his credit 26 goals. “ Enough, I suppose for a midfielder,” he said.

Recalling his memorable moment, Saqlain said the match against India at Bhopal in 1999 remains etched in his memory. “From the airport we headed straight for the ground. India scored an early goal but thereafter we hit back strongly and scored five.”

Born on February 23, 1978, Saqlain still has many years of hockey left in him. The prospects of an India-Pakistan clash always inspire him, and on the eve of the league encounter between the two countries tomorrow, Saqlain appeared well set to give his best in the true spirit of sportsmanship. “Final vi India-Pakistan da hona chahida hai,” (final should also be between India and Pakistan), he said with a glint in his eyes before departing.

Gagan Narang shoots first gold
M.S.Unnikrishnan

Hyderabad, October 26
Gagan Narang became an indelible part of India's sporting history when he shot the first-ever gold medal for the hosts in the inaugural Afro Asian Games at the Hyderabad University shooting range here today. Gagan, who has passed out of college from Hyderabad, showed unwavering concentration and steely temperament to stay in the medal hunt at the crunch situation and come up trumps to lift the gold in the men's 10m air rifle event.

It was a remarkable display of grit and talent on the big stage as Gagan allowed nothing to affect his concentration when he battled it out in the challenge round to best his rivals. Gagan had lost his grandfather in Delhi only three days ago.

Gagan got a chance to shoot in the Afro-Asiad when national coach Prof Sunny Thomas "talked Abhinav out of the competition" as the coach wanted Abhinav to keep away from shooting for two weeks, and concentrate only on his physical training as part of his overall preparation for the Olympic Games at Athens next year. Gagan's gold and Samresh Jung's silver in the 50m pistol event made it a memorable day for India at the shooting range.

Gagan, who totted up 592 in the qualifying rounds, shot 103.7 in the medal rounds to tally 695.7 points overall to ensure the gold. Ragai Emara of Egypt, who was separated from Gagan by just one point (591 plus 103.7=694.7), settled for the silver while his compatriot Mohmed Ismail collected 694 points (593 plus 101) to take the bronze medal.

Gagan had two perfect scores in his qualifying rounds when he shot 97, 100,97,99,100 and 99 while in the title round, he made a faltering start, scoring only 9.7 in the first round, but then got into a steady form to post scores of 10.5, 10.5, 10.5, 10.4, 10.3, 10.4, 10.5 while Emara paid a heavy price for not doing well in the qualifying rounds though he had matched Gagan in the title round with a total score of 103.7. He had ten-plus scores in all ten rounds of the final. But his failure to hit a 100-plus in the qualifying round proved costly in the end. Mohad Ismail, who had the best score of 593 in the qualifying round, became erratic when it mattered most in the challenge round and had to be satisfied with the bronze.

Chief coach Sunny Thomas was the happiest man at Gagan' success, for had he not won the gold, the blame would have fallen on the coach for keeping Abhinav out of the Afro-Asiad. Prof Thomas said though he was not happy with the total score of Gagan, a gold was a gold, and it was doubly satisfying that shooting brought home the first gold for India in the inter-continental games which was a brain-child of India.

Samresh Jung's indifferent display in the qualifying rounds gave him no hope of aiming for the gold in the 50m pistol event, as Zongliang Tan of China, with a consistent performance, totalled 667 (571 plus 96.6) to canter away with the title. Samresh, who scored 89,94, 93, 90, 91, 91 in the qualifying rounds, struck an erratic form in the title round with scores of 9.9, 10, 9.4, 9.8, 9.5, 8.8, 9.6, 10, 7.7 and 9.2 to total 641.9. Francois Van Tonder of South Africa finished with a total of 640 (547 plus 93.4) for the bronze.

India now pin their hopes of winning another medal in shootintg on Jaspal Rana who gets into action in the centre fire pistol event tomorrow morning.

India fish out 4 more medals
M.S. Unnikrishnan

Hyderabd, October 26
Hosts India kept themselves in line as a force to reckon with in the swimming competition of the inaugural Afro-Asian Games when they fished out one silver and three bronze medals at the Gachhibowli aquatic complex here today. India had collected three silver and two bronze medals yesterday, to take their total tally to four silver and five bronze medals.

Arun Venkataraman brought out his latent energy in the final 10 metres to kick himself into the second position in the 50m men's backstroke event to give India their only silver of the day. Arun posted a time of 0:28,20 to give a close chase to Japan's Mizuki Wakabayashi who clocked 0:26.05 to lift the gold. Michael Mars Danilo of the Philippines bagged the bronze.

Arun's silver was the second individual medal of the same hue for India after Shikha Tandon annexed the 50m women's freestyle silver yesterday. Richa Mishra, who had ruled the same pool virtually unchallenged during the National Games last year, donning the colours of Andhra Pradesh, had cantered away with the 400m women's individual medley silver with a time of 5:10.99 to finish behind Korea's Lee Sun.

India had also won the other silver in the 4x200m men's relay with the quartet of Akbar Ali Mir, Sri Nand Srinivas, Rahul Batra and Amar Muralidharan giving a thrilling display to finish behind South Africa.

India's promising male swimmer Rehan Poncha made a valiant attempt to match a classy field in the 200m butterfly, but could not match up to the might of Yohei Kato of Japan (2:03.96) and Aghiles Sliman of Algeria (2:05.92) who battled it out to clinch the gold and silver, respectively, while Rehan settled for the bronze. It was Japan's third gold of the day in swimming after failing to strike the yellow metal yesterday. For Rehan, it was yet another feather on his cap as he had won the 400m individual medley bronze yesterday.

Nisha Millet, who was a member of India's 2x200m bronze-medal winning relay quartet, added another bronze to her collection when she fought off a stiff challenge in the 200m free style to finish third, behind Yingwen Zhu of China (2:06.45) and Christine Zwiegers of South Africa.

Nisha's sister Reshma Millet provided the third bronze of the day for India when she took the third place in the 50m backstroke, the last event of the day. Inyenginikabo of Nigeria won the gold while Lianne Marice Marquiz of the Philippines collected the bronze. The competition lacked sheen on the first day as most of the events had only three swimmers, and the bronze medals of India did not carry much weight. Today was different as the swimmers had to really slog it out to figure among the medals.

A better show was expected from Richa Mishra in the 200m butterfly than a fourth-place finish but she seemed to have drained of energy in the first lap itself as the gold and silver went to Luisa Gavazzi of Zimbabwe and Chanella Van Wyk of South Africa while Shin Bom Mi of Korea took the silver.Deepak Kumar Singh and Amar Muralidharan also disappointed as they finished seventh and fourth in the 100m breaststroke and 200m freestyle, respectively. Another Indian in the fray, Ambika Narasimha Iyengar, finished seventh in the 100m breaststroke.

India win 2 bronze in weightlifting

Hyderabad, October 26

Sudhir, competing with an injured elbow, lifted a total of 290 kg comprising 135 in snatch and 155 in clean and jerk to take the bronze while Chen Chufu finished with a tally of 315 summed up by 140 and 175 kgs to win the yellow metal.

In the women’s section, National Games medal winner Sandhya Rani fumbled when it mattered most and had to content with a bronze medal with a tally of 157.5 kg (70 and 87.5).

Beenamol doubtful starter
Our Sports Reporter

Hyderabad, October 26
K.M. Beenamol and her brother K.M. Binu have ruled themselves out of the athletics competition of the Afro-Asian Games. Though Beenamol’s injury on her left toe has fully healed, she has not regained her body strength as 70 days of lay-off from the track had sent her training schedule on tail-spin.

The track queen of India, who was a multiple gold medallist at the Asian Games at Busan last year, was expected to be the star attraction, along with Anju B. George, the world championship bronze medallist in long jump, in the athletics event, which is considered as the showpiece of the event. But she confirmed to this reporter that she was not fully fit to take on the stiff challenge in the games, which would witness balzing contests in track and field as both Asia and Africa would be fielding some of their fancied stars.

Beenamol said she started training with spikes on only four days ago, and is struggling to regain her rhythm. Therefore, she has ruled herself out of the competition though she hinted that if things turn out well, she may run in the relay, which is scheduled for the last day, or may be in the 800m run, which is also scheduled for the last day of the three-day athletic competition on October 30. K.M. Binu, another medallist of Busan, is yet to recover from the viral fever he had caught during the Asian Track and Field Championship held in Manila in September.

Beenamol said she needed at least 20 days practice to gain speed. With foreign coach Yuriy Ogorodnor back in India last July, Beenamol’s training programme has picked up momentum. She admitted that Yuriy was responsible for the turnaround in her career, as he had been coaching her since 1999, albeit in short spells, and she hopes to clock 57 seconds in the 800m to put herself in the reckoning for an Olympic medal. The entire Indian athletics contingent is here and the Amateur Athletic Federation of India has ensured that the best take part in the meet, including medal hopefuls Jincy Philipps, Neelam J Singh and Bahadur Singh.

India hope to win some medals in athletics, though Africa has brought here some of the well-known names in the business, including the legendary Frankie Fredericks of Namibia. Fredericks has been one of the most consistent sprinters in both the 100m and 200 metres. Fredericks had suffered a shock defeat in the All-African Games in Abuja before coming to Hyderabad, but expects to avenge that humiliation here. He had won silver medals in the 100 and 200 metres at the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992 and a silver in the 200m in Atlanta in 1996.

Now he hopes to hit the golden jackpot at Athens in 2004, after being the second best for far too long.

Seventytwo representatives of the comity of nations of the Commonwealth will assemble in Jamaica in the Caribbean islands on November 13 to determine the bids for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in which India and Canada are in the fray. If the games are allotted to India, they will be hosted in New Delhi while Canada has projected Hamilton as the venue for the games.

Ian Emmerson, who commands 10 CGF votes from Europe, however, refused to reveal his mind as far as India’s bid chances were concerned as he said he would make up his mind only after visiting the sports facilities — both existing and proposed — in New Delhi. But he was all praise for the arrangements made for the Afro-Asian Games in Hyderabad at such a short notice. He said Manchester too had created similar facilities for the 2002 Commonwealth Games at one venue.

The representatives of all the 72 Commonwealth countries will be in Hyderabad to attend the closing ceremony of the Afro-Asian Games and then leave for Delhi to inspect the facilities there. They will be in Delhi till November 6, and then leave for Jamaica for the CGF meeting where the bid will be put to voting.

India turn tables on Aussies

Gwalior, October 26
Indian bowlers erased the horrible memories of the World Cup final as they came back strongly to beat Australia by 37 runs after master blaster Sachin Tendulkar (100) and VVS Laxman (102) exposed the weak second-string bowling attack of the world champions in a day-and-night one-dayer in the TVS Cup triangular series at the Roop Singh stadium here today.

In the first Indo-Aussie encounter since the Cup final at Johannesburg on March 23, the hosts avenged their defeat by putting up a challenging 283 runs for five after electing to bat first and then restricted the Australians to 246 for nine in 50 overs.

Sachin Tendulkar was adjudged Man of the Match.

This was an incredible roller-coaster victory for the hosts after Australia, at 132 for no loss, were running away with the match. Indian captain Rahul Dravid’s decision to bring back medium pacer Zaheer Khan turned the tables.

Four quick wickets fell in a span of 22 balls with an addition of just nine runs to the Australian chase and suddenly from 132 for no loss, the score read 141 for four.

Zaheer showed great heart. After being hit all over the park and giving away 27 runs in three overs in his first spell, he got the breakthrough and the all-important wicket of Adam Gilchrist (83), who was on a song. The left-arm pacer also got the wicket of dangerous Andrew Symonds (1), who might consider himself a little unlucky as he was adjudged leg before wicket to a ball which seemed going down the leg side.

Zaheer’s third wicket came when Mohammad Kaif took a brilliant running catch of Andy Bichel (14).

Spinners also played a vital role in the downfall of the champions as Kumble struck twice and bowled a tight spell throughout while Virender Sehwag, who failed with the bat scoring nought, took the vital wickets of Michael Bevan (1) and Damien Martyn (16). Tendulkar and Harbhajan Singh also chipped in with one wicket each.

Earlier, Tendulkar showed his midas touch, scoring a brilliant century, his 35th in just 117 balls, with nine hits to the fence and one six over mid-on while Laxman played a crafty innings of 102 runs facing just 134 balls that was studded with nine boundaries. This was Laxman’s second one-day hundred.

Tendulkar, who hit his 35th century in one-dayers, also became the highest run scorer in day-and-night matches when he reached 60 runs surpassing Sanath Jayasurya’s previous record of 4,563 runs in 125 matches. He achieved the feat in just 112 matches.

This was also India’s highest score at the venue surpassing the previous best of 267 runs for six against England in 1992-93. Pakistan hold the record for the highest score of 289 for six in the Independence Cup in 1997 here.

The 31-year-old Tendulkar was at his vintage best as he returned to torment Australia and scored his seventh century against the world champions, the highest ever in one-day cricket by any batsman. The earlier record stood in name of former West Indies batsman Desmond Haynes who had six tons to his credit. His 100 came off 117 balls and included nine fours and a six while the in-form Laxman scored his 102 off 134 balls with the help of nine fours.

Ganguly discharged, to miss Mumbai tie

Kolkata, October 26
Indian captain Sourav Ganguly was today discharged from a private nursing home where he was admitted for treatment of an abscess on his left thigh, but his return to cricketing action has been ruled out till November 1.

Ganguly has been ruled out for the November 1 triangular series match between India and Australia in Mumbai and doctors were unsure whether he would be fit enough to take the field by November 6.

Discharging the star cricketer after an eight-day stay in the nursing home, doctors said they had set a “realistic target” of making Ganguly fit for the November 6 game in Cuttack against New Zealand, but kept their fingers crossed on whether the cricketer would be able to make it.

“I’ve been ruled out of the November 1 match. But I’m feeling much better now. And with the care I have got from the doctors here, I think I can return to onfield action shortly,” Ganguly told reporters at the nursing home.

Ganguly, who missed the second Test against New Zealand last week following a minor surgery in Mohali for an abscess on his left upper thigh, was admitted to the nursing home here on October 18 after complaining of excrutiating pain in the wound.

The Indian captain was initially ruled out of the first two matches of the ongoing triangular series.

“The day I took admission here, I did not think that I’ll be walking home. I’m amazed at the way I’ve been handled and treated here,” Ganguly, sporting a stubble and looking tired, said.

Ganguly, who had undergone a mini surgical procedure to clean the wound on the date of his admission, said he had taken the hospitalisation period in his stride at a time when India were engaged in tough on-field battles.

“I’m injured. That’s part of life. (From my bed) I only wished that India win the games,” Ganguly replied when asked how he felt at being out of action despite being the skipper of the team. — PTI

Pak proposes 3 Tests, 7 one-dayers

Faisalabad, October 26
Pakistan has proposed playing three Tests and seven one-day internationals against India once the two countries recommence sporting ties, an event expected early next year, an official said yesterday.

"We have proposed three Tests and seven one-day internationals from February 19 to April 8 to the Board of Control for Cricket in India and (we are) now gearing up for the tour," Pakistan Cricket Board spokesman Samiul Hasan said.

Hasan told reporters the venues would include Karachi and Peshawar, venues South Africa refused to play recently due to security fears.

"A stadium in Quetta is also nearing completion and we have also plans to host a one-day match there," Hasan said.

Indian Foreign Minister Yashwant Sinha on Wednesday offered to revive sporting links with Pakistan and break the long-standing impasse in bilateral cricket between the arch-rivals. The two countries last played a Test series in 1999-2000. —AFP

Munaf to play for Mumbai

Mumbai, October 26
Munaf Patel, the young tearaway who has impressed all, will be donning the Mumbai colours this season.
The 22-year-old from Gujarat, who has impressed one and all with his pace visited the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) office earlier this week to deliver a letter stating that he would like to play for Mumbai, association's joint secretary Prof Ratnakar Shetty said.

Munaf has played just one first class game for India 'A' against the Kiwis at Rajkot. He is still to play a Ranji Trophy game.

Mr Shetty said that Sachin Tendulkar has a big role to play in making Munaf switch over to Mumbai. Sachin said he was a good prospect and Mumbai should utilise his services, Mr Shetty added.

It may be recalled that Zaheer Khan could not make to the Mumbai team and therefore switched alliance to Baroda, who promised him a place in all the Ranji matches. The rest was history. — UNI

Anand battles back after defeat

Cap D'Agde (France), October 26
Viswanathan Anand was battling his way back in the World Rapid Chess Championship, after his shock defeat to Hungarian Judit Polgar, holding Frenchman Joel Lautier to a draw in the fifth round here today.

Anand, who lost to Polgar yesterday in the fourth round after beating her Hungarian compatriot Peter Leko earlier in the day, now has 2.5 points in Group B where Russian Peter Svidler is in the lead with 4 points.

The Indian ace is fourth in the group, where eight players are competing to finish among the top four, with just two more rounds remaining in the league phase. The top four from each of the two groups will qualify to the quarterfinal.

Svidler had two drawn encounters with local stalwart Lautier and compatriot Alexander Grischuk and a fine victory over former world champion Anatoly Karpov in the last three rounds. He looks a near certainty for the knockout stage as well as Polgar who has 3.5 points. —PTI

Advani wins world snooker title

New Delhi, October 26
Pankaj Advani yesterday brought back the world snooker crown to India after a gap of 19 years when he outplayed second seed Saleh Mohammad of Pakistan 11-6 at Jiangmen in China.

Advani, playing in his first-ever World Snooker Championship, became only the second Indian to lift the coveted title after Late OB Agarwal.

Agarwal won the title in 1984 at Dublin, Ireland when he defeated T Parson of Wales.

The 19-year-old cueist from Bangalore displayed tremendous maturity against the seasoned Pakistani, who had not lost a single match in the run up to the final, to win the the title with a 35-64 7-79 73-10 66-56 46-59 87-13 81-43 71-13 0-95 15-93 64-36 78-33 43-47 135-0 65-46 70-67 63-22 scoreline, according to information received here.

"I am simply elated. I am at a loss for words to describe my feeling at the moment. It is yet to sink in", Advani told PTI from Jiangmen just after winning the crown.

Advani said the tour to United Kingdom just a month before the championship helped him tremendously.

"I went to UK for training and got a chance to play against the world's best players which gave a new dimension to my game," he said.

Advani along with former Asian champion Yasin Merchant, Manan Chandra and Rafat Habib were sent to UK for training under the Indian government's scheme for promising sports persons.

The country's youngest national champion took a while to adjust with the tension of the big stage as he lost the first two frames rather easily.

However, Advani gathered himself up in time and won five of the next six frames to lead 5-3. But the young lad seemed to be tired at the end of the session allowing his opponent to run away with the next two frames as the two went into the breather locked at 5-5.

The parity at the break seemed to have given Advani the confidence of going all the way as he returned to the table with a stride.

With tension rising at 7-6, the champion came up with a total clearance break of 135, third highest in the tournament, in the 14th frame and then a 70 break in the 16th to take a comfortable 10-6 lead. — PTI
