The chosen few among schoolchildren

Not many schools in Chandigarh can boast of this. Ten students of YPS Mohali are chosen for special duties inside the PCA Stadium whenever there is a match here. A highly coveted task for the students, the students of Class XII are generally given a chance to be at the stadium.

No sites fixed for crackers’ sale at Mohali yet

With only four days left for Divali, persons intending to sell crackers are still making frantic visits to the offices of the SDM and the municipal council here to know whether any sites have been earmarked for sale in the town and the type of crackers they will be permitted to sell.

Ad hoc appointment part of regular service, says HC

An interruption between two spells of service rendered under the state government is to be treated as automatically condoned except where the break has been caused by resignation, dismissal or removal from service or participation in a strike, a Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court has ruled.

Conveying the message of national integration, “Sadbhavna cycle rally” organised by 11 Punjab Battalion reached the city today. The rally, in which 21 NCC cadets from different schools of Amritsar along with 10 other employees of the battalion are participating, reached The Tribune office this evening.

Awareness camp on safe drinking water

National Police Day is celebrated on October 21 every year but very little emphasis is laid on the historical aspect of this day. When talk of ‘Hindi-Chini bhai-bhai was in the air and when principles of Panchsheel were taking shape, China surprised us on this day in 1959. A police party led by D.S.P. Karam Singh, which was on routine patrol 40 k.m. within Indian Territory in the Hot Springs area, faced unprovoked firing from the Chinese entrenched on hills and scattered on other side of Chang Chenmo river.

A highly decorated soldier remains unsung

UR first war with Pakistan soon after Partition in 1947 reminds us of one of the highest decorated Indian soldier, Naib Subedar (then Jamadar) Nand Singh. He won a Victoria Cross in World War II in Arakan in March, 1944, and a Maha Vir Chakra (posthumously) in Uri sector in J&K on December 12, 1947. Nand Singh was killed when an LMG burst hit him in the chest after he had killed a large number of the enemy.

ASI suspended in building collapse case

Taking a serious view of the Gulmohar Colony (Part II) building collapse case, in which one worker was buried alive and four others had sustained injuries, the Inspector General (IG) of Police, Patiala, has suspended an ASI besides ordering an inquiry into the case.

4 cattle charred to death

Four cattle were charred to death in a fire that broke out in a cattle-shed in Haripur Kuran village located on the Dera Bassi-Barwala road, about 2 km from here late last night.

Servant held for theft, Rs 90,000 recovered

The police today claimed to have solved a theft case by arresting the domestic help of a house in Sector 40. The servant, Harkesh Singh, was arrested from Amritsar and the stolen amount Rs 90,000 has been recovered.

‘Tantrik’ booked for fraud

The police has booked a “tantrik” on charges of cheating a medical practitioner after promising to send him abroad by using black magic.

SBI pensioners resent termination of scheme

The State Bank of India Pensioners Association has expressed its resentment on the sudden termination of medical benefit scheme and introduction of a new scheme with much higher contribution from the employees. The association claimed that increase in contribution would badly hurt the retirees.

HE controversy over certain appointments made during the tenure of Prof M.M. Puri, a former Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University, continues unabated in the academic and administrative circles on the campus. The meeting of the Senate recently (October 12) witnessed exchange of hot tempers between those supporting and those against 14 appointments under question.

Kids say no to crackers
Chandigarh, October 20
About 1,500 children and teachers, besides 200 doctors, participated at a public awareness rally — ‘say no to fireworks’ — organised by the National Integrated Medical Association’s local branch. It was held in association with Sector 22 Market Welfare Association and private schools located at Chandigarh and SAS Nagar. The participants swore against the use fire crackers on Divali. The rally was flagged off by Senior Superintendent of Chandigarh Police Gaurav Yadav from Sector 22-D market. He appreciated the association’s efforts and their concern for the society.

Bon Sante Club, Sector 17, Chandigarh, bagged the Fourth Inter-Club Bodybuilding Trophy with 64 points, while Chaudhary Fitness, Mani Majra, finished runners-up with 45 points. The meet was held at Vishavkarma hall, Mani Majra. Rakesh of Bon Sante was declared Mr Inter-Club and Balwinder Singh, was adjudged Mr Mani Majra.

Australian sports consultant to visit city school

Ms Judy Myers, Australian consultant to the Active Sport (India) and former consultant to the Australian Sports Commission at Canberra, will be visiting Vivek High School, Sector 38, Chandigarh, to train coaches and students under the Junior Sports Leadership Ward Course in 27 sessions over the next 27 weeks.

Admn revises rules for booths’ allotment

The Chandigarh Administration today said all persons, who were eligible for allotment of booths, would have to participate in a draw of lots and would have to start their trade within six months of taking possession.

Admn’s order to levy property tax
Chandigarh, October 20
Decks have been cleared for the levying of property tax at the rate of 5 per cent on commercial and institutional property in the city. Exempting government buildings from the payment of property tax, the Corporation will charge nominal service charges from the government department concerned at a rate of 75 per cent of the tax calculated on a building in the respective zone.

MC to hold fresh survey of institutional buildings

Apprehending less revenue from the water tariff and sewerage cess levied on government and private institutional buildings, the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh today decided to carry out fresh survey of the institutional premises.

Well-lit roads to Mohali by Divali
