agree with Major S.S. Khosla on chaotic traffic conditions in Ludhiana, published under the heading, Traffic Blues, in these columns of Ludhiana Tribune on December 5. The traffic scenario described on the busy roads in the presence of cops is awful. A determined action on part of senior traffic police officials, as suggested, is indeed needed to ensure smooth flow of traffic.

Held with 1480 gm opium
Ludhiana, December 18
The police yesterday nabbed an alleged opium smuggler during a naka and seized 1480 gm of the contraband from his possession. The accused, Kimti Lal, a resident of Hargobind Nagar, was arrested and booked under Sections 18,61 and 85 of the NDPS Act.

1 killed in mishap
Ludhiana, December 18
One person was killed and eight were injured, three of them seriously, when a tanker carrying milk collided head-on with a private bus near Badhel village, 2 km from Sudhar on the Raikot-Ludhiana road, this morning.

Various associations representing the small-scale industries’ sector have appreciated the decision taken by the Planning Commission to modify the policy relating to the availability of credit to tiny and small-scale sector from banks and other financial institutions. The federation observed that the decision would go a long way in helping sector to come out of recession.

Connect has new numbers
Ludhiana, December 18
Connect numbers for Jalandhar, Ropar, Sirhind and Hoshiarpur have been changed with immediate effect. The Connect subscribers in Jalandhar for fixed line phones and fixed wireline terminals (FTWs) shall have to replace the first digit by 50. For example, the old number 881234 will now be 5081234.

Protest in college against IHRO report

The staff and students of Guru Nanak Girls College, Model Town, here have condemned the “false, baseless and motivated report” published by the International Human Rights Organisation (IHRO) regarding the bir burning incident in the college. Students and teachers staged a dharna on the college premises today in this connection.

Industrial training for African students
Ludhiana, December 18
The Punjab Government has organised a “Technical Trainers Training Course” under the UNDP/UNIDO programme for African countries. Twelve participants from six countries, including Tanzania, Zambia, Ethiopia, Ghana and Nigeria, are undergoing training at the Research and Development Centre for Bicycle and Sewing Machine at Ludhiana in this connection.

Give adequate power to unit, PSEB told
Ludhiana, December 18
The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has issued directions to the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) to provide adequate power supply to an industrial unit, which was being made to pay minimum charges despite being fed from an agricultural feeder with no definite hours of power supply.

New-generation poets under the banner of Pankati, held their maiden kavi darbar, “Pratham Paryas,” with the cooperation of Punjabi Sahitya Akademi last evening at Punjabi Bhavan. Dr Surjit Patar lit the ceremonial candle.

Gujjarwal sports fest from Jan 10
Ludhiana, December 18
The annual sports festival at Gujjarwal village about 20 km from here, will be held at the Shree Gur Hargobind Sahib Stadium from January 10 to 12. According to a press note issued by Mr Pawittar Singh Grewal, president of the host club, Amarjit Grewal Club, this was decided at a meeting of the club today.

Admn warns LPG dealers on unauthorised supply
Ludhiana, December 18
Taking a serious view of the rampant sale and supply of gas cylinders by the gas agencies outside their earmarked areas, the local Food and Supply Department has directed all dealers to supply LPG cylinders only in their areas and warned that in case of any kind of violation, stringent action against the defaulter would be initiated.
