Admn reduces stamp duty
Chandigarh, July 1
The Chandigarh Administration today reduced the stamp duty on sale of property from 12.50 per cent to 6 per cent. This would now match the duty structure in the neighbouring Punjab.

Cable men shock subscribers again
Panchkula, July 1
Cable subscribers in the region are in for a rude shock. The monthly cable tariff has been hiked by Rs 50 to Rs 75 from this month onwards.
The rates have been hiked following a hike in subscription rates by some pay channels since May and increase in connectivity charges of its package by the Star TV.

Parliament ‘yet to flay’ massacre of Sikhs

While the US Congress and Senate have condemned bigotry and violence against Sikh-Americans in the wake of the terrorist attacks in the USA on September 11 last year, the Indian Parliament is yet to condemn the massacre of Sikhs in 1984, Mr Tarlochan Singh, Vice-Chairman, National Commission for Minorities, said today.

Sadbhavana Express makes a poor start
Chandigarh, July 1
It came chugging into the Chandigarh railway station, but a bit too late on the very first day. The Lucknow-Saharanpur Express, extended up to Chandigarh, was supposed to arrive here at 11.30 am — as per the new time table released by the Northern Railways.

Painters do brisk business
Chandigarh, July 1
Getting the number plates painted from black to white was an expensive affair today — dearer than it was yesterday — before the expiry of the deadline.
As the residents, scared of getting challaned following their failure to get the background painted from black to white, waited patiently in queues for their turn, the painters unabashedly increased the rates by as much as Rs 50.

The district administration has set up six base control rooms for flood control in rains. The Deputy Commissioner, Ms Jyoti Arora, said control rooms had been set up at the block, tehsil, subdivision and district levels.

Robbing of industrialist: three held

Three youths were arrested today on charges of robbing an industrialist of over Rs 1.80 lakh and his Ford Ikon car here on June 25.
Mr Rajinder Garg, a resident of Panchkula who runs an industrial unit manufacturing precision metal sheet parts and components in Phase IX here, was forcibly deprived of the cash, a mobile phone and his car by three persons.

Kidney removal: HC notice to Director
Chandigarh, July 1
In less than a week after doctors at the Sector 16 General Hospital reportedly took out a kidney of a patient having stones in her gall bladder, a Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today asked UT’s Director, Health Services, and other respondents to submit a report to the court giving details of “how such a deplorable incident took place”.

Death due to negligence: HC notice to PGI

Taking suo motu notice of a newspaper report regarding the death of a three-year-old boy allegedly due to ‘medical negligence’, a Division Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today directed the issuance of notice to the PGI, through its Director, asking the institute to submit a report ‘giving full details of the incident leading to Nimish’s death’.

A five-day coaching camp for junior players ended at the Chandigarh Golf Club driving range on Sunday. The 10 children who attended the camp were Vriti, Gobind, Angad, Anmol Virk, Sartaj, Rajat, Akashbir, Sahil, Aryan and Kirat. The youngest of them, Aryan, was three-year-and-a-half old and the eldest, Vriti, was 13-year-and-a-half old.

The government schools in Chandigarh would now have specialised sports training in the evening hours also, said Mr D.S. Mangat, DPI Schools, UT. Mr Mangat said this would help in creating an environment for sports in the schools as the grounds were less utilised during that period.
