photo “We are committed to our nuclear doctrine of `no first use’. Pakistan’s nuclear strategy will not come in the way of our conventional forces...we will take action at the appropriate time”, top-level Army sources said. The statement comes in regard to Pakistan’s ambassador to United Nations Muneer Akram’s utterances yesterday that Pakistan had the right to defend itself with whatever means it had and that it did not believe in the “no first use” theory. Earlier senior Pakistani leaders, including President Pervez Musharraf, had also said their country would resort to nuclear weapons even in a conventional war with India. Asserting that infiltration from across the border was continuing unabated, the sources said the armed forces were prepared to take on the “enemy” but added that a final decision in this regard could only be taken by the political leadership. Pointing out that the scale of Pakistani shelling on Indian targets had increased considerably since the massacre in Kaluchak by terrorists, the sources said India was retaliating in self-defence. “ While Pakistan has been firing at civilian targets...our effort has been to destroy those who have been aiding and abetting infiltration and cross-border terrorism”. The sources confirmed that Pakistan had started moving towards the Indian border the troops it had hitherto deployed along its border with Afghanistan. |

State BJP meeting
begins today Lucknow, May 31 This will be the first meeting after the party’s defeat in the recently held Assembly elections. The political resolution, which the committee is to announce on the first day of the meet, is likely to focus on the political compulsions of the party to join hands with the BSP in the state. This will be the first meeting in which former Chief Minister Rajnath Singh will be present as in charge of Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal. Union Human Resource Development Minister Murli Manohar Joshi is also likely to address party workers. On the eve of this crucial working committee meet, the party leaders find themselves in a piquant situation. There is confusion about the fate of senior leaders, who are looking for greener pastures in New Delhi. The political grapevine is rife with speculations that the state President of the party, Mr Kalraj Mishra, and a former Chief Minister, Mr Rajnath Singh, are pulling strings to get accommodated at the Centre. The other issue, which is likely to be discussed threadbare, is the reasons of defeat of the party in the Assembly elections. The party workers have again some questions to ask from the senior leaders. Sources say the committee is likely to suggest putting party workers in a disciplinary drill and may suggest more training camps for the party workers. |
UP ministers love big families Lucknow, May 31 In Mayawati’s 22- member ministry, there are two spinsters — the Chief Minister herself and her IT Minister, Dr Sheema
Rizvi, while the rest of her colleagues are married. In UP, politicians are
(in) famous for bearing a large number of children. One of the MLAs, Laxmi
Narain, who was even a minister in Mr Rajnath’s cabinet has 11 children, 10 of whom are daughters. He fathered a son only last year. Among the 399 other legislators, 141 have more than five children. This list is tentative, says the secretary of the UP Vidhan
Sabha, Mr R.P. Pandey. The MLAs have been asked to submit their family backgrounds, including educational qualifications to the assembly secretariat. A majority have submitted the details, he said. According to the UP Department of Information, Mr Rajbhar has the maximum number of children. The Agriculture Minister, Mr Hukum Singh, comes second with six children. Then there are three ministers — Kokab
Hamid, Jagdish Narain Rai and Ravi Gautam — who have five children each. Ministers Indrajit
Saroj, Thakur Jaiveer Singh, Dharam Vir Singh Ashok, Anis Ahmad Khan and
A.L. Gaur have four children each. |

One more 3-D film
Kochi, May 31 The film, being made under the Navodaya banner, has been shot mainly in New York and has well-known singer and actor, S P
Balasubramanian, Suraj Balaji, a child star and Trilok Malik in the cast, besides a host of foreign actors, Navodaya
Appachan, the film’s producer, told reporters on the sets of the film. The set here itself has been artistically converted into an American street complete with a restaurant. About 200 men laboured for about two months to give it an authentic touch, he added. The main attraction of the film is a group of 40 specially trained dogs from Hollywood, who have already stolen the hearts of the film crew with pranks, Appachan said. The film would be dubbed in four languages — Hindi, Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu, he said. There were also plans to bring out a CD for television viewers, he said adding that specially-made spectacles would have to be worn by the spectators for viewing the film in the theatre or on TV to get the 3-D effect.
