CWC authorises Sonia to decide on
President New Delhi, May 22 The CWC, which met today to approve the drafts of the resolutions to be adopted at the AICC session on May 24, agreed to certain amendments in the proposals. Congress chief spokesman Jaipal Reddy said that no discussion was held on the Presidential elections and the decision was left to the Congress President. Situation in Jammu and Kashmir and killing of senior Hurriyat leader Abdul Ghani Lone came up for discussion at today’s CWC meeting. While the draft for political resolution had been prepared by a panel headed by Mr Arjun Singh, Mr Manmohan Singh was convener of the panel preparing draft economic resolution and Mr Natwar Singh of the panel preparing draft resolution on international affairs. Sources said the political resolution at the AICC session would discuss the threats to the India’s secular fabric as revealed by the developments in Gujarat. The party will also speak on cross-border terrorism and the tension on the Indo-Pak border. On coalitions, Congress leaders indicated that the party may not go beyond what had been said in the last plenary session at Bangalore where the party had spoken of its willingness to form alliance if demanded by the prevailing situation. Congress leaders maintained that the prevailing tension along the Indo-Pak border would not seriously impact the tone and tenor of the resolutions at the AICC session. They said that the session had not been called in any special context and was a “customary meeting” which was required to be held every six months. “We had to hold it now since no such meeting had been held since the Banglore plenary session held almost a year back,” a senior leader said. Today’s three-hour CWC meeting was attended by all CWC members and Congress chief ministers, except Chattisgarh Chief Minister Ajit Jogi. Meanwhile, Ms Sonia Gandhi today struck a note of caution on the emerging war-like situation with Pakistan saying that the government needed to do much more on the diplomatic front and take the international community into confidence before initiating further action. Ms Gandhi was replying to questions as she emerged from the CWC meeting. |
Lone’s killing a setback:
Sonia New Delhi, May 22 “After Mr Lone’s killing, the Government should now initiate talks with moderate leaders in the state for restoring peace and also ensure that free and fair Assembly elections are held later this year,’’ Mrs Gandhi told reporters here. She said the Government should explore all diplomatic options and take the international community into confidence before initiating any further action against Pakistan. Terming as “cowardly act” the killing of Hurriyat Conference Leader Abdul Ghani Lone, the CPM said it was meant to disrupt the possibilities of a political dialogue and vitiate the atmosphere in view of the forthcoming Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. “This cowardly act has been perpetrated by forces inimical to the stand taken by him against fundamentalist-terrorist outfits operating from Pakistan,” the CPM Politburo said in a statement here. The All-India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (AIMMM) has expressed shock over the killing of senior Hurriyat leader Abdul Ghani Lone and said that a voice of sanity and peace had gone forever. AIMMM president Syed Shahabuddin, in a statement here today, said the departed leader had visualised Kashmir “as a bridge between India and Pakistan” and worked for peace in the sub-continent.
