By the experience when thousands of telephones in the Punjab and Haryana civil secretariat, the UT Administration Secretariat and several VIP sectors in the north of the city remained dead on two occasions during the last fortnight, the BSNL has decided to install on a priority basis an additional telephone exchange in Sector 4 to serve the area.

Army Medical Corps function

The 238th anniversary of the Army Medical Corps was observed by AMC personnel in the Western Command Hospital, Chandi Mandir today.
It was on this day in 1764 when the Bengal Medical Service was formally organised to provide medical cover to the troops of the East India Company, and over the years, this organisation was amalgamated into the Indian Medical Service.

Best aircraft BRD trophy

The IAF’s trophy for the best aircraft base repair Depot has been bagged by 3 Base Repair Depot. The depot has also been awarded the Rajbhasa Bronze Shield.
According to a statement issued here today, the awards were received by the Air Officer Commanding, 3 BRD, Air Cmde S.B. Prashar, by the Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Maintenance Command, Air Marshal S S Gupta during the annual IAF Maintenance Field Commanders’ conference held at Nagpur in December.

Markfed calendar released
Chandigarh, January 1
Mr D.S. Bains, Managing Director, Markfed, today released the 2002 calendar based on religious paintings of famous painter Sobha Singh.
This year the nation is celebrating the hundredth birth anniversary of the great painter and visionary. “Sobha Singh has given different directions of our thoughts and ideas about the Sikh Gurus. When we contemplate on the Gurus in our mind, it is his paintings which come floating in our thoughts.”

Police to send monthly reports on fake currency

The Chandigarh police will send monthly reports on detection of fake currency notes being circulated in the city to the intelligence wing of the Ministry of Finance.

Waiter dies of asphyxiation
Chandigarh, January 1
A waiter working with a private catering firm reportedly died of asphyxiation in the wee hours of today. The deceased, Govind, a resident of Khejeri village, finished work at about 1.30 am and proceeded to spend the night in the firm’s godown in Batela village near Sector 41.

Maloya resident murdered
Chandigarh, January 1
A resident of Maloya, Jaipal, was allegedly murdered by two persons in the Sector 25 Janata Colony this evening. The police has arrested one of the accused, Vicky (18), a resident of the same colony. The other accused, Dilbagh, alias Kala , a resident of Ropar, has absconded.

Health check-up camp for slum children

The Community Medicine Department of the PGI, today organised a health check-up camp at Ashiana School in Sector 24 for slum children. Dr J.S. Thakur, Assistant Professor at the Community Medicine Department, said at the camp slum children were told about the personal hygiene measures and benefit of cleanliness.

Loveleen wins cycling bronze
Chandigarh, January 1
Loveleen Kaur, a Class VII student of Tender Heart School, Sector 33, pedalled to glory by bringing home a bronze medal in the 55th senior, 32nd  Junior and  18th Sub-Junior National Track Cycling Championships which concluded at Bikaner on December 30.
