Seers vow to end female foeticide
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, June 24
A national convention of religious leaders here today committed itself to eradicating female foeticide from the country.

The convention, in the backdrop of protests from some women’s organisations, saw renowned religious leaders of all faiths condemning female foeticide as “shameful and inhuman”. The leaders emphasised that this practice had no sanctity under any faith. The women’s organisations were protesting against the presence of certain religious leaders at the convention, the first of its kind.

“We, the citizens of India and the representatives of various religions and sections of India, strongly condemn the inhuman and shameful practice of female foeticide,” they said.

Pledging their “total commitment” to the movement of abolishing female foeticide”, representatives of various faiths led by Jagadguru Shankaracharya of Kanchi, Swami Jayendra Saraswatiji Maharaj, said, “We all take oath that we would use all resources to propagate to the Indian masses to shun the atrocious practice of female foeticide from our country.”

Addressing the convention, Union Human Resources Development Minister Murli Manohar Joshi said the participation of religious seers was significant as more than laws, the word of the seers would have a greater impact in putting an end to such social evils.

Despite the passage of 17 Acts in this regard, the practice continued unabated with the connivance of the people as also the medical fraternity, regretted the minister. He hoped that roping in religious leaders to reverse the adverse child sex ratio.

Describing the convention as a “beginning”, he appealed to the religious leaders to sit together and review the religious texts and declare such discriminatory and orthodox customs as “immoral”.

“There is a need to interpret the religious texts in the modern context,”Mr Joshi said.

The convention was organised jointly by the National Commission for Women, Indian Medical Association and Unicef.

Mr Sanjay Malik, honorary secretary of the IMA, said the convention was a proactive endeavour to correct the grave imbalance in the child sex ratio which was as low as 927 in country, with Punjab registering 793 and Haryana 820.

Arya Samaj leader Swami Agnivesh stressed upon the need for reforms in several social customs like dowry, which, according to him, was the main factor behind female foeticide.

“Until we tackle such issues at the socio-economic level, we should not expect female foeticide to come to a halt,” said Swami Agnivesh. His view was endorsed by scores of leaders who had gathered from across the country to express solidarity with the girl child.

New Delhi, June 24
The Congress will tomorrow submit to President K. R. Narayanan over five crore signatures, demanding the dismissal of the Vajpayee government over the Tehelka expose.

The signatures were collected during two-month exercise by the Congress carried out in villages and towns across the country.

After having repeatedly asked for the exit of the Vajpayee government, the Congress is now approaching the President for dismissal of the Vajpayee government. This is perhaps the first time that such a large number of signatures have been collected for removal of the Central government.

The memorandum says that Prime Minister was “hanging on to his position’’ despite demands for resignation. “We are now constrained to request you to dismiss the Vajpayee government as per the Constitutional powers vested in you.’’

Congress President Sonia Gandhi is on a visit to the USA and the party’s delegation to the President carrying five crore signatures would be led by party’s senior leader Pranab Mukherjee. He will be accompanied by CWC members. The signatures would be carried tomorrow to Rashtrapati Bhavan in a big vehicle.

Party sources said the largest number of signatures have come from Maharashtra, where 1.25 crore people signed the memorandum. Rajasthan sent about one crore and Karnataka 87 lakh signatures.

The most populous state of UP sent 80 lakh signatures while Madhya Pradesh sent 60 lakh. Nearly 27 lakh signatures came from Punjab, 12 lakh from Haryana and 11.5 lakh from Delhi.

Though Uttaranchal, which has a BJP government, sent eight lakh signatures, Bihar could send only 10 lakh. Jammu and Kashmir sent only 1.3 lakh, Himachal Pradesh four lakh, Tamil Nadu 6.2 lakh and Congress-ruled Chhattisgarh 2.8 lakh. Kerala, where elections were held, sent only about a lakh signatures.

“The government can say whatever it wants inside the House, but what people think outside is reflected by these signatures,’’ remarked AICC general secretary Oscar Fernandes who coordinated the signature campaign.

Muslim manch objects to scenes in ‘Gadar’

Lucknow, June 24
Close on the heels of protests over the screening of Hindi movie “Gadar” in Bhopal recently, the Muslim Jagriti Manch here has taken strong exception to some portions in the film saying that it was a deliberate attempt to create a wedge between Sikhs and Muslims.

“The film, set in the pre-independence era depicting the mayhem of Partition, portrays muslims in a very poor and derogatory manner,” president of the manch Sayyed Kalbe Hussain told PTI.

The manch had already given an ultimatum to the government to withdraw objectionable scenes from the film by June 28. Otherwise Muslim youths would forcibly stop the screening of the film, specially in Muslim-dominated cities, he said.

Hussain, who is also peeved over the mention of his father and noted Shia scholar Maulana Kalbe Sadiq’s name in the acknowledgements of the film, said he was filing a Rs 10 crore defamation suit against the director and producer of the film and notices would be served on them on Tuesday.

Questioning the relevance of the Censor Board that has passed the film, he demanded that a review committee of religious leaders from all communities should analyse the film and decide whether it should continue to be screened or not.

Noted Shia cleric, Maulana Kalbe Sadiq, who is also the vice-president of the All-India Muslim Personal Law Board, when contacted said he was not aware of these things as he was out of the country.

Manch president Kalbe Hussain said a memorandum against the film had already been sent to some Union Ministers, the state Chief Minister and the Lucknow District Magistrate.

Meanwhile, the Lucknow district administration has taken remedial measures and enhanced security arrangements in and around the cinema houses showing the film. PTI

12 student leaders held in Manipur

Imphal, June 24
In a major crackdown to contain the anti-ceasefire agitation in Manipur, the police today rounded up 12 student leaders, including the president of All-Manipur Students Union (AMSU), and all educational institutions were asked to close down their establishments for a week from tomorrow.

The police rounded up 12 AMSU leaders, including its president O. Shyamachand, for leading the protest against the extension of Naga-ceasefire in Manipur and the subsequent violence which rocked the state leaving 14 persons dead and scores injured on June 18.

The state government today issued a notification asking to close all educational institutions of the state for a week from tomorrow. The decision was taken in view of the arrest of the student leaders, sources said.

The district authorities in the capital today allowed all banks located here to operate for three hours from 9.00 am onwards.

All banks had been closed from June 16 onwards following a 66-hour general strike called by senior citizens of Manipur and supported by All-Manipur United Clubs Organisations (AMUCO), an apex body of different organisations to protest the extension of ceasefire.

Meanwhile, the arrested students started an indefinite hunger strike in the Sajiwa jail to protest detention.

The six-hour curfew relaxation period from 5.00 am today passed off peacefully in Imphal East and Imphal West districts.

All these areas had been under indefinite curfew since June 18. No untoward incident had been reported so far from these areas. With the improvement of the situation, the authorities have decided to extend relaxation period from tomorrow.

NEW DELHI: The BJP on Sunday opposed the demand of some of its NDA partners for the revival of Manipur Assembly brushing aside their assessment that installing a popular government would bring back peace in the troubled state.

“Revival of Manipur Assembly which had been placed under suspended animation should not be considered by the government at all at this point of time. The cause for violence is not related to the event and the revival of the Assembly is irrelevant,” BJP Secretary Padmanabha Acharya, who is incharge of north-east told UNI.

The violent protests that witnessed the killing of 14 persons in the state after the Centre signed an agreement with the NSCN (IM) extending the ceasefire to those states bordering Nagaland were led by students organisations like the All-Manipur University Students Union (AMUSU) and the All-Manipur University Clubs Organisation (AMUCO). Father claims ‘sutra’ for super kids
Santosh Jha

Patna, June 24
Tathagat, the 13-year-old wonder boy of Patna might be the youngest person on the earth to have qualified NET to be a lecturer and is part of the delegate from India to participate in the global meet of the Nobel laureates to be held in Lindo, Germany but his father too claims to have a rare “sutra” in his hand that if true will be a dream come true for the human civilization. The father of the wonder boy, Mr Tulsi Narayan Prasad, claims that Tathagat is the outcome of his research that can produce ‘wonder kids’ like him.

Too good a news for the crazy Americans who have so far spent billions of dollars to develop a principle of eugenics. If Tulsi has up in his sleeves what he claims, the humanity is in for a world inhabited by ‘super humans’.

Tathagat had it from the very childhood. He is probably the most neglected but rare talent on earth. Tathagat is embarking on the journey to Germany in the hope to get confirmation about his research on the “Experimental Solid State Physics”. He will talk to Nobel winners in science and hopes that he will fetch a Nobel prize for his research. He has claimed the patent for his research on atom and for that he plans to visit America.

The wonder kid has the claim to have the know-how to facilitate rain at a place of choice and the amount pre-decided. For that he is working on a “cloud bank”. He has a dream to run the car on gas made from the excreta of humans.

His father must not be forgotten, as it was Mr Tulsi who fought for the talent of his wonder son. From the very start people discouraged him not to pressure his son with so much of expectation and workload, but he went ahead with fighting for his son’s cause. His claimed research on eugenics and super human may not be true or viable scientific theory, but what he did for his son certainly is a human principle every father should learn. He fought cases in the courts and launched agitations against the educational institutions that refused tests for Tathagat. He ran from pillar to post, knocked every newspaper office to get justice for his son.

Now Tathagat has finally got recognition from the Government of India. This is the principle of eugenics that makes every son super human even if he has the average talent. Mr Tulsi, however, says, his research is foolproof and anyone can get a wonder son if his research is put to practice. May be the wonder kid and his wonder father will some day create history by bagging the Nobel Prize for their queer researches in different fields.

Maneka accused of ‘misuse’ of authority

Thiruvananthapuram, June 24
Kerala Animal Lovers’ president A. V. Krishnan Moosad has asked Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Maneka Gandhi to either relinquish her ministership or the post of the chairperson of a non-governmental organisation, “People for Animal” (PFA).

In a letter to Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee, he alleged that the minister had grossly misused her authority to remain the chairperson of the PFA after the reconstitution of the Animal Welfare Board.

“Naturally it is the dual role of a minister and chairperson that is reflected in the constitution of the new board. It is a gross misuse of authority that she has made the board a miniature PFA in which she is interested,’’ he added.

Mr Moosad also demanded a close scrutiny of the functioning of the board during the tenure of Ms Gandhi as minister. A copy of the letter was released to the Press today.

He further alleged that after Ms Gandhi became minister, the board ceased to function except in some matters of the minister’s interest. UNI
