Highway blocked for over six hours
Police inaction in murder case alleged
Mundi Kharar, June 24
Members of the locally-based Bangala community blocked the Chandigarh-Ludhiana highway here for more than six hours today to protest against the inaction of the Fatehgarh Sahib police to arrest the persons involved in the alleged murder of two youths of their community.

Gen Malik ‘leaked classified papers’
Chandigarh, June 24
A former Commander of the Kargil-based 121 Independent Infantry Brigade, Brig Surinder Singh, whose services were terminated this month, today claimed that the Army brass had been apprised of intrusions in the Turtuk and Haneef sectors as early as February, 1999, but the euphoria over the Lahore bus diplomacy episode prevailed over logic and professionalism.

Protester shifted to hospital
Chandigarh, June 24
Neeraj Kumar Agarwal of Fazilka, who was on an indefinite fast in front of the office of DPI (Primary) here, was forcibly taken away to the General Hospital by the city police today amidst protest by hundreds of members of the Unemployment Technical Teachers Institutions, Punjab.

PU faculty house, hostels raided
Chandigarh, June 24
The Chandigarh Police yesterday night swooped down on a faculty house at Panjab University and found a boy and a girl illegally residing in a room. The police arrested R. Godara, a former student of the university. He was later released on bail.

Make separate entries, Cath Lab staff told
Chandigarh, June 24
The Cardiology Department at the PGI today issued instructions to the Cath Lab staff to make separate entries of the names of the patients, their card numbers and addresses while using stents, balloons, pacemakers and other items which were found by the CBI during a search operation on June 20.

Ultimatum in Siau murder case

Members of the community to which the two children, who were found murdered in Siau village, belonged today gave three days to the local police to arrest leader of youth wing of the Akali Dal, Mr Kiran Bir Singh Kang, along with other suspects in the case. 


THE deities at the Sri Sanatan Dharam Temple, Sector 22, are today looking ‘‘new’’. A black layer of dust had got deposited on the idols. The renovation of the idols was done by two students of the Government College of Arts, Mr Vikas Sankhwar and Mr Vikas Dogra.

Regularise need-based alterations, CHB urged

The fourth campaign meeting of the CHB Federation was organised by the Resident Welfare Association, Sector 40, here today. Mr B.P. Arora, convener of the association, urged the Chandigarh Housing Board to withdraw its threat of mass cancellation of flats and demolition of need-based additions and alterations after July 31.

Opium smuggler arrested

The Dera Bassi police has claimed to have arrested an inter-state smuggler and seized 5 kg of opium worth Rs 80,000 from his possession. Mr Harcharan Singh Sidhu, DSP, said Ramesh Kumar, the accused, was arrested from Jola village last night.

Kids display art skills
Panchkula, June 24
The four-week summer camp at Satluj Public school, Sector 2, concluded with a valedictory function here today. An exhibition of art and craft items prepared by the participants of the workshop was displayed. These included colourful tiles, murals, foil paintings, sketching, spray painting, block painting while decorated pots of all shapes and sizes, prepared by the participants, were also exhibited. Other activities in the summer camp included swimming, skating, teaching of spoken English and solving curriculum difficulties.

Shuttlers allege unfair selection

Javed T. Halim and Abantika Deka, shuttlers from Assam, were made to languish since June 11 at the Sector 42 sports hostel for no fault of theirs by the officials of the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) where a camp in preparation of the Asian Schools Badminton Championship to be held in Malaysia from July 9 was in progress.Top
