Gimme red!
Beyond the lights, behind the camera, and more than action… the world of making music videos is reaching a new level. And it's not just the Punjabi actors and actresses playing models or the fancy DJ giving music or exotic locales that is stealing the show, the story actually begins from behind the camera, it begins here in the technical department.
If you thought Jazzy B and Surveen Chawala hoping around in the recent album Boot or for that matter Jassi Gill being shot down ruthlessly in Vich Pardesan is fun to watch, then shift the radar to the department that has made it possible. The technical know-how of Punjabi music videos is just getting better by the day. Since, for Punjabi singer-actors, music is the first love and you bet, the videos have got to be nothing but the best. A high-profile director of photography, some flown from Mumbai, a Red Epic camera with double the price for one shoot, an online editor who flaunts his degree from a fancy college, this department is strengthening its corners. Take it from people behind the scene… Know-how Punjabi videos were all about a Punjabi singer taking away all the limelight as a model, a pretty girl and the song shot either in a college or a mall. Move over, for the technical team in these videos is now giving it an upbeat look. Music & video director and actor V Grooves, along with the technical team Vikcee, director of photography (DOP), editor Kamcee of Chaar Botal Vodka fame and production manager Neeraj Bhatt gives a film-like look to his videos. "Today, the quality of Punjabi music videos has increased manifolds and it is only because of the technical team; a singer or model doesn't have to do much with it," he says. Cutting a single is a religious duty for all Punjabi singers, thus their video has to be out of the world. This has increased the demand of qualified DOPs. "A good DOP can change the look of the song. In addition to this, Red Epic camera has also given a new dimension to how the videos look. The camera gives a song a film-like look with the best colour quality," shares V Grooves. Screen shot
Music videos are being shot in the best locales and music companies are spending money on it more than they ever did. Navjit Buttar and Arvinder Khaira from team Virsa Arts are credited for bringing in new concepts and looks to the videos. Navjit and Arvinder work as directors and DOPs for their albums. "Immediately after the concept, it is how well the video is shot that makes all the difference. The work of a good DOP is to capture the essence of the song through camera angles." Enn Syan and Varinderpal Bains in his team handle the management bit of the technical department apart from the overall management. "No longer are the videos shot on regular cameras, most people prefer the red camera for a grand look." Next time when you see a Punjabi music video, don't forget to think about where it gets its grand look. Atharv Baluja, managing director, Artha Film Studios, Mohali, makes sure the videos he shoots have a high-quality technical back-up. "I handle the camera work myself, because it is the camera and the vision that make all the difference," shares Atharv, going back on times when a 'technically strong' DOP was unheard of in music videos. "Set director is another big addition. So, now an art or set director will coordinate with the DOP to suggest where the frame will look best," says he. Atharv handles all the work for his music videos from start to end. A self-taught director, who has a degree of engineering, Atharv makes sure everything in the technical department, which he handles, is absolutely correct and updated. So, here are videos that can give any Hindi music video a run for its money, and as Navjit says, "I would love to direct a Pitbull video." Well, that time isn't far, it seems! jasmine@tribunemail.com Shot by shot Red Epic ushers in the next generation of digital cinema, featuring a 5K sensor capable of capturing 1 to 120 frames per second at full resolution. Green signal
I believe we all are sleepwalking off a cliff if we don't do this…when James Cameron, a powerful Hollywood director behind movies like Titantic, Avatar and Terminator, says strongly about something the world sits back and takes notice. Here Cameroon is talking about going vegan — opting for a strict vegetarian diet sans any meat or dairy products.
If yoga is one, vegetarianism is another tenet hugely picked by the West from India. If on one side we are being drowned in consumerism, on another is the wave to turn green, burgeoning a drive to protect our eco-system! Celebs lead the trend in packs. Joining Cameroon, the green crusader, is former Spiderman Tobey Maguire; English comedian, actor, author and activist Russell Brand, country music singer, songwriter and actress Carrie Underwood and comedienne, actress, writer, television host and producer Ellen Lee DeGeneres. Vegetarianism has found strong roots in the western world, In India, it has been a culture for centuries. Hottie Vidyut Jamwal, ace actress Vidya Balan, item girl Mallika Sherawat and megastar Amitabh Bachchan have all been practicing vegetarianism for long! However, not all are born vegetarian, but increasingly people are giving up meat; some to a lead a healthier life, others in order to reduce their carbon footprints. For Payal Sodhi, it was an inner call and gave up meat way before she founded People For Animals. Born and raised in a Punjabi Army family, non-vegetarian food was the order of the day. At thirteen, she gave up pork. "I just didn't feel like eating it," she shares. Slowly she eliminated meat and chicken from her diet too. "You know sometimes how childhood memories come back. I just recalled this goat that used to be my friend when I was really small. I felt as if all these years I had been eating her only. There went meat and along with it chicken from my diet. She founded PFA way later and knowing what all an animal has go through to make it to your plate, she only was proud of her decision. The after effects? "I feel so much cleaner as a human being now and am totally fit. Vegetarian fare offers so much more amino acids and fibre that are starkly missing from non-vegetarian diet." Also, Payal today has conviction to stand for the cause she has been relentlessly pursuing. For entrepreneur Tarun Setia marriage brought in the concept of all green meals. A non-vegetarian all his life, Tarun had meat or chicken every single day till inspired by his wife he made the changes in his eating habits. The difference, "I guess I am only getting fitter with age," Tarun laughs. It's not like it was effortless giving up a food habit so ingrained in his system but Tarun was clear on what he was aiming at, "Initially, I would feel tempted when non-veg was served on my table. But that was only in the beginning. Now, a vegetarian for years no matter whatever is served in front of him, he will stick to his greens. It was an inner call for Ranjit Singh, PHP developer with Oditi Global Solutions Pvt Ltd, Mohali. With a mother, who is a vegetarian, and a father, who is a non-vegetarian, he followed up his father's lead only to change his mind last year. "One fine day, last December, it just came to my mind to listen to my mother who had been urging me to be a vegetarian all along. I decided to follow her. Once my mind was trained, it was all easy." Change of diet hasn't altered his lifestyle, he only feels healthier, "I eat more now," he smiles. A practicing advocate with Punjab and Haryana High Court, Madhu Dyal changed her food habits looking towards a cleaner life. "The change made me feel lighter and better, physically active and mentally positive," says Madhu. The decision was hers and 17 years on, she has stuck to greens. "It's misleading that vegetarian diet isn't capable to nourish the body. If your body is functioning fine, it will draw elements its needs from vegetarian food too," she adds.
Rich choice Vegetarian or not, you can get all the nutrients body needs if you are little conscious on how you plan your meals. Dietician Pallavi Jassal from Live Life More Diet & Wellness Clinic-46 elaborates, "The essential components of our food are carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals and fibre. NNon-vegetarian food is considered to provide better protein, vitamin B12 and omega fatty acids but that can be sourced from all vegetarian diet too. Look at soya for protein. Tofu ais a good sources too and easily available now. Flaxseeds (alsi seeds) are rich in omega fatty acids. Add sprouts to make sure all body’s basic needs are met. The rest, be it carbs, fats, minerals or fibre, vegetarian food is richer…

End of the matter
American band Backstreet Boys has ended a long running legal battle with former manager by accepting a $ 99,000
settlement. The group has also regained ownership of the master recordings of a number of their songs, including the 1995 hit I'll Never Break Your Heart, reported a website.
Lou Pearlman, the music mogul behind the I Want It That
Way hit makers, was sentenced to 25 years behind bars in 2008 after being convicted of masterminding a half-billion-dollar scam. The Backstreet Boys subsequently filed legal action against Pearlman, claiming they were owed almost $ 3.5 million, but a bankruptcy trustee for his beleaguered estate hit back, insisting there was a lack of evidence to back up their accusation. The judge overseeing the case ordered the two sides to work out a deal earlier this year. — PTI

Never flown? No worries!
Superstar Brad Pitt has revealed that he had never been on a plane until he was 25. The 50-year-old actor — who raises children Maddox, 13, Pax, 10, Zahara, nine, Shiloh, eight and twins Knox and Vivienne, six, with wife Angelina Jolie - is keen for his kids to get education by seeing as much of the world as possible while he and his spouse are working, reported a website.
"Travel is the best education there is. I had never been on a plane until I was 24 or 25 so when I started to travel abroad, whether it was to Netherlands or Tokyo or Belgium, it was all such an experience. Angie and I travel a lot for work and that's great but you're always on a schedule. So - especially with the kids-we always try to carve out days where we aren't working and where we experience more of the culture of a country," he said. — PTI

I fear getting framed: Taylor Swift
Singer Taylor Swift says her biggest fear is getting framed for a crime as, she feels, people can write anything about her which can put her in trouble.
Swift, 24, said she can never imagine herself in jail and she would not survive there, reported a magazine.
"I'm scared of being framed. So many people (could) frame me. And they can frame you for any crime that you could go to jail for. I wouldn't survive in jail," she said. I think the dream and nightmare of being framed comes from - I could do nothing wrong, I could sit in my house with the cats all day and somehow there could be an article about me buying a house in a place I've never been or dating a guy I have never met. So, it's like... then you take it a step further and in a nightmare world it's being framed for murder," she added. Meanwhile, her new pop album 1989 has leaked online, days before its October 27 official release. The album's first song to hit YouTube was Blank Space, which was withdrawn by her label, Big Machine Records, within hours, reports a website. While the status of some leaks remains unknown, her entire album currently continues to be on an anonymous Tumblr page and is accessible to anyone who happens to get hold of the password. However Swift's fans are being supportive and reportedly decided not to have an early listen and wait for the official release. — Agencies

Govinda’s fan club
Saif Ali Khan, who has teamed up with Govinda for the first time in an upcoming romantic-comedy Happy Ending, says the Hero No 1 actor is the most authentic star of the Hindi film industry.
Saif, 44, said he felt like a child to share screen space with Govinda as he is a brilliant dancer and actor. "I really respect his work and it's amazing to watch him dance. I was trying to learn something from him. I felt bit of a kid and excited especially when he was dancing. He is a genuine star and I am happy to dance next to him," Saif said. Directed by Go Goa Gone filmmakers Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK, Happy Ending is a multi-starrer, funny take on romance and relationships. The film is expected to hit theatres on November 21. Govinda, 50, is making a full-fledged comeback after a gap of three years. Next month he would be seen in two back-to-back films -Kill Dill and Happy Ending. Saif, who is also one of the producers of the film, said Govinda was apt for the film because the scenes between them looked very natural and effortless. "It is actually really funny because if you watch the film there were at least three-four major scenes between us. It was not that we were putting some effort to do a shot. It was just like I am reacting to him. My acting was kind of very straight face and subtle. Whereas his was more front-bencher. It was a good mix. It was like two people from two different planets," he said. Happy Ending also stars Ileana D'Cruz, Ranvir Shorey and Kalki Koechlin in prominent roles besides Preity Zinta and Kareena Kapoor making guest appearances. — Agencies

A fan’s chronicles
Did you know that yesteryear star Sadhana, who ruled Hindi cinema in 1960s, was one of the highest paid actresses of the time? The trendsetter, who has got a hairstyle named after her (the Sadhna cut) and a churidar-kameez she popularised way back, still has takers. The actress would take home a remuneration of Rs 4 lakh a film, an exorbitant amount in those times, which ended up being a few times more than the actor cast opposite her. Those who have frequented cinemas in the 60s remember her beauty and grace. Amongst her fans, is former IAS officer, SP Singh.
So much so that the fan in him ended up writing an ode for his muse and called it Sadhana: Enchantingly Enchanting Enchantress of Hindi Cinema. This fan compares her icon as a meteor that rose in Hindi cinema, both enticing and ethereal. Penning a book sans an interview is no mean feat, but Singh, buoyed by none other than his wife, Indu, took up the task. "Sadhna lives the life of a recluse today and doesn't give any interviews," says Singh, who did meet his icon, but couldn't get to interview her. So, he set out for National Film Archives of India, Pune, to source all that he could. Dedicating three years of his life, Singh remembers how watching Sadhna's first film, Love in Shimla, put him on a long road to fandom. And, it's no research piece; it's a fan remembering the actress. Singh doesn't shy from admitting how he abhorred anybody criticising Sadhana or preferring another heroine over her. "I was and still am jealous of the successes of her rival heroines and simply hated the producers who chose others over the bewitching Sadhana," he shares. If the reel life of this 'mystery' girl makes an interesting story, her real life was as intriguing. "She belonged to an affluent background, but partition changed it all. Her parents came from Karcahi to Mumbai and worked as roadside vendors to start with. Yet, they ensured Sadhana went to a convent school," shares Singh. This actress finished her college when most of her compatriots weren't educated and belonged to a rather unprivileged background. The book that was formally launched in Chandigarh on Sunday has its writer elated. Published by Unistar, this is rightfully dedicated to all the past, present and future fans of
Sadhana. Her own place in the world
What SP Singh loves most about the actress is that Sadhana has always lived life on her terms. She ruled the roost when at the peak of career and enjoyed self-induced seclusion post it. "Sadhana still has friends in Helen, Waheeda Rahman and Asha Parekh and they move together. Nanda was part of this group too," shares Singh. "She made a rare appearance with Ranbir Kapoor this year when she walked the ramp for designers Shaina NC and Vikram Phadnis in support of cancer and AIDS patients earlier this year," adds Singh, who has her old and latest pictures in the book.

Looking for off-beat work
TV actor Himmanshoo A Malhotra, who recently entered TV show Airlines, talks about his role and more.
Tell us about your role. It's a very interesting role; my character is charming, rich, charismatic and flamboyant. It is pretty much based on the lines of Siddarth Mallaya. What is so special about your role in Airlines? My character will add to the proceedings of the story. At some point of time, there would be chemistry seen brewing between Tulip and Yudi and my entry charms this young lady and eventually she'll be seen getting attracted to me. Since both of us are pilots and share the same passion of flying, it's going to turn out to be an exciting story. My character is called Rohit Mafatlal. Your last daily soap was Love Marriage Arranged Marriage. For how long have you been away from TV and why? The gap has been almost for 16 months, predominantly because my dad passed away last year and I had to take break for eight months. So, the past one year, I was busy taking care of my mom and handling my dad's business, which is based in Delhi. This was the most important thing at that point of time. After that, I shot for Encounters and Yeh Hai Aashiqui, and currently I am seen in Airlines. What kind of daily soap you would like to do? I was actually very amazed by this 24 series by Anil Kapoor. As far as daily soaps are concerned, I have been a part of five daily soaps and feel that as an artiste sometimes they can get stagnant, which becomes monotonous. So, this show by Anil Kapoor came as a fresh lease of air, which was shot in a different manner with filler scenes. If given an opportunity, I would definitely want to be part of it and, as it would help me meet new people and grow as an artiste. What you love to watch on television and why? I like this show Zindagi Gulzar Hai on Zindagi. My mom and I are a big fan of Fawad Khan and actually watch his show. I would want to watch something like this, because it has great music, very simple, very original and as its said beauty lies in simplicity.

The year ahead
If your birthday is October 27...
Your birth on the 27th adds a tone of selflessness and humanitarianism to your life path. Certainly, you are one who can work very well with people, but at the same time you need a good bit of time to be by yourself to rest and meditate. Regardless of your life-path number, there is a very humanistic and philanthropic approach in most of things you do. This birthday helps you be broadminded, tolerant, generous and very cooperative. You are the type of person who uses persuasion rather than force to achieve your ends. You tend to be very sensitive to others' needs and feelings, and you are able to give much in the way of friendship without expecting a lot in return. With Saturn continuing to push you to your highest level of growth and maturity, you're feeling tested on a daily basis. Although this might be quite a grueling experience, as Saturn can create a feeling of isolation or separation, you're being given the gift of finding out what you're really made of. When you no longer have external sources of support that are reliable, do you turn inward to your own resources or continue to focus on the disappointment? Positive colours: Golden, red, white, yellow and cream Select Days: Tuesday, Friday and Thursday Favourable numbers: 3, 6, 9 Gems recommended: Red coral and yellow sapphire Charity on birthday: Donate raw or cooked rice to the poor.
Anuradha Paudwal (October 27, 1954), who has been one of the leading playback singers, had a long spate of successes in the Hindi playback industry. The negative combination of Rahu-Venus brought a storm in her married life. She will continue for a long time in the music world. |
