Seeking shelter for 13-yr-old boy
Notice to Snehalaya

Acting on a petition seeking directions to Snehalaya to admit a child, the court today issued notice to the Chairman of Snehalaya to file a reply by October 27. The court has also issued a notice to the boy’s father and the Guru Asra Trust in Pulsora, who were made respondents in the case.

It has been alleged by the petitioner that they are running from pillar to post to various shelter homes but no one is willing to keep the child who was found living by the roadside.The court had earlier forwarded the case pertaining to the custody of a 13-year-old boy, who was mercilessly beaten up by his drunkard father and left on the roadside, to the Child Welfare Committee after an NGO moved court. The boy had lost his mother some years ago. Accepting an application seeking direction to keep the child in the Snehalaya or any appropriate place, the court had observed that the child needed protection. The court ordered that the custody of the child be dealt by the Child Welfare Committee. Sonia Mattu, president of Manav Seva Kalyan Mahasangh, an NGO, and the child had moved court seeking directions to the Snehalaya to accept the latter.

Firing at dhaba: 2 arrested

Mohali, October 20
The police have arrested two of the five persons allegedly involved in a case of firing at a dhaba in Phase XI here on October 4. SHO of the Phase XI police station Naveen Pal Singh Lehal today identified them as Keshav Rajniwal of Sirsa and Mandeep Singh of Moonak in Sangrur district, aged between 25 and 30 years.

They were arrested from near the Commando Complex in Phase XI. A UP-made pistol had also been recovered from them, he added.

The two suspects were produced in a court here and have been remanded in police custody for two days.

The SHO said on the directions of SSP Inder Mohan Singh Bhatti, a police party was sent to Patiala as the car used in the crime had a Patiala registration number. It was learnt that the car had been sold to a Chandigarh resident.

A case had been registered against five unidentified persons under Sections 307 and 294 of the IPC and various provisions of the Arms Act.

The police said five youths had come to the dhaba in a car and ordered food. They started playing loud music creating an unruly scene. The youths were asked to reduce the volume but they, claiming that the delivery of the food ordered by them was late, threatened an employee of the dhaba. When others in the area also objected to the loud music, one of the youths took out a pistol and fired. They then fled.

Puneet’s murder
Ram Lal arrested

Chandigarh, October 20
In yet another development in the Puneet Sandhu's murder case, the local police has arrested Ram Lal Chaudhary, father of victim's live-in partner Amit Chaudhary, for the conspiracy of murder.

According to sources, Ram Lal Chaudhary was arrested this evening. He was one of the main accused in the rape-on-wheels case involving former UT Home Secretary NK Jain.However, he along with and all other accused were acquitted in thecase earlier this year. Puneet Sandhu, a resident of sector 49, was found murdered at her flat on October 17. — TNS

Youth held: 3 cases solved

Mohali, October 20
The police have arrested a youth allegedly involved in cases of looting in Mohali district. The 26-year- old youth was identified as Gurtej Singh, alias Gogi, of Machhikalan, who was now living in Chandigarh.

A country-made pistol and a live cartridge were seized from his possession. A case has been registered under Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act.

Harpal Singh Sandhu, SP (HQ), said the suspect was allegedly involved in three cases of loot.

IPSC cricket championship
Rai MNSS beat YPS

The host side of YPS, Mohali, went down against Motilal Nehru School of Sports (MNSS), Rai, Haryana, in a match of the ongoing IPSC Cricket Championship for boys (U-14), being held at Yadavindra Public School, Mohali, here today.

After electing to bat first, the host side posted 137 runs in the allotted slot of 20 overs whereas MNSS side chased down the target with 5 wickets in hand. In another match, Daly College, Indore, tasted defeat against Yadvindra Public School, Mohali. After electing to bat first, the Indore’s outfit posted 131 runs in the allotted slot of 20 overs. While in reply, the YPS, Mohali, easily chased down the target in 18 overs with four wickets in hand. MNSS School, Rai, (Haryana) defeated YPS, Patiala. The Patiala side scored 116 runs in the allotted slot while MNSS achieved the target with eight wickets in hand.

In the matches of pool B, DPS (RK Puram), New Delhi, defeated Pinegrove School, Sabathu, by 2 runs. The New Delhi side posted 100 runs for 2 wickets in 15.3 overs while Pinegrove School managed to score only 98 runs. Earlier, Pinegrove School defeated Lawrence School, Lovedale, (Ooty) by 10 wickets. Putting to bat first, Ooty’s outside bundled out on a mere total of 65 runs while in reply Pinegrove School scored 69 runs in 8.3 overs. In a match of Pool–C, Modern School, New Delhi, overpowered DPS side Mathura Road, (New Delhi). The former set 143 runs target in 20 overs while the losing side ended their innings on 123 runs.

Inter-college handball championship
GGDSD-32 begin campaign with win

The handball team of GGDSD College, Sector 32, defeated GN College, Narangwal (Ludhiana), in the opening game of Panjab University Inter-College Handball Championship for men, being held at Panjab University, here today.

The team registered a 32-13 win over the rivals. In another match, DAV College, Malout (Muktsar) edge past SCD Government College, Ludhiana, by one point. The winning side won the match 23-22. In other matches, Panjab University Campus defeated PGGC-11, 23-11 while SGGS College, Sector 26, beat DAV College-10, Chandigarh, 28-26.

Inter-school football tourney
GMHS-36 blank Strawberry Fields 4-0

The football team of Government Model High School, Sector 36, defeated Strawberry Fields School, Sector 26, 4-0 during a match of the ongoing Inter-School Football Tournament for Boys’ (U-14), here today.

Taison Singh of GMHS-36 opened the team’s account with his brilliant effort in the 10th minute while Gurkirat doubled the lead in the 15th minute. Later, striker Sailo scored two more goals, one each in 26th minute and 29th minute, respectively. In the first match of girls (U-14) category, Government Model Senior Secondary School defeated St Stephen’s School, Sector 45, by a solitary goal. Ritika scored the winning goal in the 7th minute while St Stephen failed to overpower the lead. While in the second match, Carmel Convent School, Sector 9, defeated Saupin’s School, Sector 32, 1-0.

The only goal was scored by Kaina in the 12th minute. In the last match, Chitkara School, Sector 25, defeated Government Model High School, Sector 25, 4-2, in a tie-breaker while Government Model High School, Sector 20, defeated Ryan international School, Sector 49, 1-0.

Golf academy gets flood lights

The British School, Sector 44, has come up with a mini-golf course having flood lights at the Junior Golf Academy of the school, here. The lights were inaugurated by Birinder Singh Gill, president, Chandigarh Golf Club (CGC), and congratulated the golf academy. Six poles having 48 operational lights will serve the golf course.

The facility will be open for golfers of the British school and also for other young golfers. Manjit Kochar, Director, Golf Academy, The British School, said a one-month junior golf camp will be held from October 25 for children aging between 5 to12 years. The academy will also host first day-night junior and sub-junior golf tournament on October 26. The interested participants should submit their entries at The British School, Sector 44.

“The flood lit miniature golf course will be a big boon for learners,” said Gill.

Badminton tourney from Nov 13

The Chandigarh Badminton Association will organise the State Badminton Championships for all age groups at the badminton hall of Panjab University Campus. The championship will be held from November 13.

The interested players can confirm their entries with the organisers by November 7 (5 pm) with coaches of centres including Panjab University badminton coaching centre, Sports Complex, Sector 42, and Badminton Centre, Sector 23.
