Bathinda, October 19 A pointer to the fact is that the sale of crackers has gone down over the years. Suresh Goyal, a wholesale cracker dealer, said, earlier, children used to come with their parents to buy crackers in bulk and they would go for expensive crackers which would create loud noise. “But this time, there is no such scene. There is an overall recession in the market. Children themselves are staying away from crackers. Even if their parents tell them to buy crackers of their choice, children prefer to buy few crackers. Now, they do not pressurise their parents to buy expensive crackers the way it used to happen till five years back,” he said. Other wholesalers opined that earlier, the cracker sellers used to stock up crackers worth several lacks and would still run out of stock two days before Diwali. “Earlier, the cracker sellers used to be sure that they would clear the stock a day or two before Diwali and the buyers used to be scared that the crackers would get expensive on the day of Diwali. But the story has changed now. Although cheaper Chinese crackers have flooded the markets, there are fewer buyers. The dealers keep their fingers crossed and hope for the wedding season to tide them through and help them clear the stocks,” said Jagmeet Singh, another wholesaler. The Bathinda Association of NGOs has also played a big role in bringing down the use of crackers in the city. Over the past years, members of Bango have held rallies and awareness campaigns in the city to sensitise the residents against the ills of bursting crackers. The efforts of some residents to go in for a Green Diwali aims to change all this. The sale of organic products is at an all time high, with even gifts ranging from exotic food items to cosmetics and bags being opted for. Some fire cracker companies have also come up with the eco-friendly crackers made up of recycled paper. The sound produced is under the decibel limit prescribed by the Pollution Control Board. These crackers produce paper flutters and different colour lights instead of the heavy duty noise of the crackers. Rajiv Kumar, who sells crackers, said the customers were aware of the eco-friendly crackers and since he did not store it, his sales had drastically gone down by 30-40 per cent as customers are demanding eco- friendly crackers this year. Sandeep Kumar, a resident of Model Town Phase I, said this is good move by the people and it shows that they are serious about the environment. But he reminds that this is just the start and green Diwali has to become a movement and not just an activity observed by some families. How
to keep it green?
DPS, Bathinda, today organised a cycle rally to wish the residents of Bathinda a safe, happy and eco-friendly Diwali. As part of its social responsibility, the school organises an anti-cracker cycle rally every year to sensitise the residents of the city about the harmful effects of crackers, not to mention the unfortunate accidents. Students went around on their cycles to spread the message of conservation of natural resources and saying no to crackers. The cycle rally was flagged off by tehsildar Pritpal Singh. |
Irked by MC apathy, residents hire pvt workers for sanitation
Bathinda, October 19 Upset over the rising garbage menace and turning a blind eye by the officials of the Municipal Corporation over the issue, the Residents’ Welfare Society today had their locality cleaned by a privately hired workforce of seven safai workers. The society engaged the safai workers at a cost of Rs 300 per worker to clean the roads and streets in Bharat Nagar. “Initially, we had decided to clean the areas at least once a week,” said society president, Dharam Pal Bansal. He stated that the workers swept the heaps of garbage lying by the roadside, in the parks and outside the houses. “Though everyone expresses a desire to clean his surroundings, hardly anyone comes forward with a broom. Even those who talk about cleanliness look otherwise when monetary contribution is sought from them to clean the surroundings,” said Harbans Lal Garg, vice-president of the society. He added that even a paltry sum of Rs 50 to Rs 200 is not released by most of the area residents and there are only a handful of people who have the ‘courage’ to give such an amount to clean their surroundings. Even at times, those who organise religious or marriage functions refuse to pay Rs 20 or Rs 50 to collect the leftover material lying on the roads, the members said. “We have been discussing about the garbage piling up in our locality and roadside for the past few days and instead of making rounds of the Municipal Corporation and pleading before the government servants, we decided to collect Rs 300 each from the like-minded people to clean the area,” said general secretary of the society, GP Chhabra. |
Jhumba shifted to emergency after condition deteriorates
Bathinda, October 19 Dr Ramesh Maheshwari shared that his blood pressure had fallen a little but his vital stats were stable. “His condition is stable and there’s nothing to worry about. State president of the farmers’ cell of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee Inderjeet Singh Jira also visited Jhumba in the hospital. BJP workers celebrate party’s performance in state polls
Bathinda, October 19 The trends that came out in the morning showed the BJP going ahead of all the parties and forming government on its own in Haryana and putting up an impressive show in Maharastra. Party workers started gathering on the roads and in the afternoon, they converged at the Fire Bridge Chowk with the posters of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in their hands. They distributed ladoos and set off firecrackers to celebrate their victory. Amid shouting slogans such as “Narendra Modi Zindabad”, the party workers danced to the beats of dhol nagadas to celebrate the end of the Congress’ rule in the two states. BJP Bathinda Urban president Parminder Goyal said all the credit for the win went to Narendra Modi and the people of the two states who have voted for development and the work done by the Modi-led BJP government at the Centre. He said the victory had boosted the morale of the BJP workers. It is worth mentioning that with this victory, BJP local leaders are also upbeat as the Municipal Corporation of Bathinda (MCB) elections are also round the corner and they feel that this time they have a good chance to cash in on the Modi wave. |

Public support must to curb eve-teasing
Sukhmeet Bhasin Tribune News Service
Bathinda, October 19 Active public support
The problem of eve-teasing and sexual harassment cannot be completely checked by police alone. There is a need for active public support along with new stringent laws that must be effectively implemented. The presence of WASPS and other police personnel should be made more effective in vulnerable areas, especially near girls’ schools and colleges. The success in curbing crimes against women also depends on the attitude of the people. They have to decide if there is any justification in providing open jeeps, highly expensive luxury cars and bikes to teenagers. Parents should not blindly support the wrongdoings of their wards. Rather, they should try to inculcate moral values in their children so that they don’t break laws and indulge in immoral and unethical activities. No undue political and administrative pressure should be brought upon the police for the release of culprits, no matter how powerful and influential they are. Prof NK Gosain, Dean, Malwa College Police patrolling
Many a time, boys have been noticed wandering on their motorbikes on the Ajit Road. They follow girls and try to abuse them physically. It has happened twice with our friend. We feel very scared and have stopped going out alone. The police should increase patrolling in this eve-teasing prone area. At present, hardly any police officials are seen outside educational institutes where these incidents take place. Ankush Aggarwal, a city resident Self-defence
Eve-teasing incidents are on the rise these days in the city. It is not safe for girls to go out alone in the market. Schools should start special classes of martial art or self-defence for girls so that each and every girl should know how to defend herself in a difficult situation. The police can’t be present at each and every place. Gurpreet Singh, a city resident Failure of WASPS
After the Delhi gang-rape incident, the police have come out with some new measure to stop rising incidents of crime against women. A new Women Armed Special Protection Squad (WASPS) was constituted in the city to keep check eve-teasing incidents outside schools and colleges. But it is sad to see that these fully equipped squads have failed in their purpose due to their non-serious attitude. They are seen busy on their mobile phones or chatting with their colleagues. They are least interested in performing their duty. PP
Maheshwari, advocate Awareness on the issue
The police administration, schools, colleges and social organisations should come together to hold seminars, rallies, competitions, awareness campaigns, plays to sensitise students, especially boys on eve-teasing and crimes against women. Parents should also take the responsibility to teach their sons to respect women. Krishan Kumar, a city resident |
Politics is now passion for Chirag Paswan
Bathinda, October 19 The statement is important in the context that the JLP is largely perceived as a party of the dalits in Bihar. Even today’s function was organised in collaboration with Dalit Sena. Son of the Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan, Chirag said, “A large number of families of the so called affluent classes were passing through a very tough time in meeting their daily requirements. In a changed socio-ecomonic scenario, our party is committed to stand by all those needing our support so that their voices are heard.” “We have tied up with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after detailed in-house discussions. We did not contest in the assembly elections of Haryana and Maharashtra, independently. We, instead, chose to support the party, which was aptly reflecting the mood of the nation,” he said. When questioned about the possibility of a return to Bollywood, Chirag said “Politics is a very serious subject. I do not want to confuse my role of a voice of the problems of the people with a face under glamour lights. Doing films was my hobby as a youngster. However, politics is my passion at the moment.” Chirag featured in ‘Miley Naa Miley Hum’ opposite Kangana Ranaut, Neeru Bajwa and Sagarika Ghatge, which failed at the box office. |

Insurance company directed by Forum to refund Rs 1.59 lakh to resident
Bathinda, October 19 In case of failure to pay the compensation and fine within 45 days, an interest of 9 per cent per annum till the realisation of the sum will have to be paid. A complaint in this regard was lodged by Kanchan Singla, a resident of Shakti Nagar. Her counsel in the forum, advocate Naresh Garg said the insurance company repudiated the genuine claim of his client over frivolous grounds. He said his client had purchased an insurance policy for a sum of Rs 3 lakh from the insurance company for death benefit and critical illness benefit. His client paid an annual premium of Rs 7,265 for the policy, which had a cessation date up to February 19, 2019. The policy was purchased on February 19, 2009. However, in 2013, the insurance firm again approached the complainant and apprised her of a new insurance product in the name of ICICI Pru Health Saver and told her that the previous policy was for 10 years and the new policy would cover her till the age of 75 years that is 22 years. On the assurance of the firm, the complainant discontinued her previous policy and purchased the new policy with effect from March 20, 2013. The complainant paid a premium of Rs 22,000 for the sum assured of Rs 3 lakh. The firm sent the insurance policy to the complainant, which covered her risk and major medical illness, including a claim of one knee or one hip joint treatment. The woman complained of severe pain in her left knee in November-2013 and was rushed to Max Hospital, Bathinda, where doctors diagnosed her of osteoarthritis. The doctors advised her knee replacement and wrote in the medical history that the complainant was witnessing pain in both her knees for the last 5 to 6 years. The firm took the plea that the complainant was suffering from severe pain for the last more than 5 years and hence she concealed the facts from the insurance company and she could not claim the benefit from the company. They also pointed out that under particular clauses, the claim could not be given during the first two years of the policy. The complainant, however, pleaded that though she was suffering from a mild pain in knees due to old age, the problem was never severe. Moreover, she did not have any previous history of treatment or admission in any hospital for the treatment of knees, except Max Hospital. After hearing the arguments and claims of both the parties, the forum reached at the conclusion that there is a deficiency in service on the part of the firm in repudiating the claim of the complainant on flimsy grounds, whereas claim for up to one knee or one hip treatment is covered in a policy year, and thus the complainant is entitled for the same. The firm has been directed to pay a sum of Rs 1,59,734 and another sum of Rs 15,000 as fine. |
