Jr. hockey team retains Johor Cup
Johor Bahru, October 19 Harmanpreet (45th and 90th) slammed home two set pieces at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium to take his goals tally to nine in the tournament. For Great Britain, Samuel French (55th minute) was the lone goalscorer. Great Britain, unbeaten in the preliminary round, came into the final with a psychological advantage over India having beaten them 2-0 in their round-robin clash. But defending champions India had a record to play for as they wanted to be the first team to win the title twice since the inception of the tournament in 2011. Malaysia had won the inaugural title with Germany winning in 2012 and India last year. And the young Indians duly achieved their goal with a late winner from Harmanpreet. The Punjab lad scored his second and the all-important winner for India with just 45 seconds from time by converting his second penalty corner of the day. It was a hard-fought encounter between India and Great Britain as both the teams did not give an inch to each other at least in the opening half. But India finally took the lead in the 45th minute through Harmanpreet's penalty corner conversion. Varun Kumar then got a chance to double India’s lead but his attempt from a penalty corner in the 53rd minuteflew inches wide. Great Britain then added salt to India’s wound when French converted a penalty corner in the 55th minute to level scores. A controversy then erupted in the 62nd minute when custodian Abhinav Pandey was shown the green card and an outfield player was taken off to bring on substitute keeper Subodh Tirkey. With the match coming to close, India were awarded another penalty corner just 45 seconds from the hooter and Harmanpreet duly converted it. — Agencies Outstanding performers

Sanga questions sudden decision to tour India
Colombo, October 19 The Sri Lankans are currently under an intense fitness programme conducted by the former national rugby union skipper Chandrishan Perera. The programme was tasked at conditioning players for the busy schedule ahead leading up to next year's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. The Sri Lankans were to face England in a seven-match home ODI series before heading off to New Zealand for a Test and ODI series. Lanka keen to host India in Test series next year
After having agreed to play a five-match ODI series in India on a short notice post the West Indies pullout, the Sri Lankan board is looking for a return favour from the BCCI by playing three Test matches in the island nation in August 2015. “We have already confirmed our participation in the five ODI slated between November 1 and 14. And yes, we are now looking to host India for a three-Test series in August next year,” a Sri Lankan official told PTI. “The talks of the series are still in the preliminary stages, so it’s too early to confirm it. But we are looking forward to host India,” he added. Originally, Sri Lanka were to tour India in August 2015 for a three-match Test series according to the amended Future Tours Programme (FTP), but now Sri Lanka Cricket wants to reverse the hosting. The Sri Lanka Cricket is expected to make around $8 million by hosting the three Tests against India. There has been no word from the Indian board, which will only take the next course of action in the emergency meeting of the working committee meeting slated to be held on Tuesday. The meeting was scheduled after the West Indies team aborted its tour midway and returned home post the fourth ODI in Dharamsala following a long-standing pay dispute with their cricket board. With the fifth and final ODI, one-off T20 and 3 Tests remaining to be played during the series, the venue officials of the respective grounds have requested a match in the upcoming Sri Lanka series. The BCCI will take a final call on the venues and the dates in the working committee meeting. — PTI |
BCCI calculating the damages of West Indies pullout
CHANDIGARH, October 19 The BCCI's working committee will decide whether to go ahead with the claim at a meeting on October 21 in Hyderabad. West Indies were scheduled to play five ODIs, a T20 and three Tests in India, but pulled out after the fourth ODI, in Dharamsala, due to the players being displeased over a revision to their payment structure. The Indian board lost out on revenue for 17 match-days. Though Sri Lanka agreed to fill the vaccum by playing five ODIs, the BCCI will still lose income for 12 match-days for the 2014-15 season. The BCCI is likely to claim those damages from the WICB. “We have referred the matter to our legal cell and asked them to let us know by 21st about how we can pursue the issue legally,” BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel told a cricket portal, declining to elaborate on the numbers since he said they were still being computed. “They [WICB] entered into a bilateral agreement with us, and they abandoned the tour due to their internal issues, so we will have to seek compensation. But, depending on the legal advice, the working committee will decide the future course of action.” For this season, revenue for each match of West Indies series was believed to be approximately Rs 33 crore. BCCI insiders revealed that the 2014-15 season's estimation was “around the same as last year”. Hence a total loss of Rs 396 crore. Board to cut WI tours?
India are supposed to play 10 Tests, 15 ODIs and four T20s over five series during the FTP cycle from 2015 to 2023. Four of these five series are scheduled to be played in the West Indies. It is not sure how many of them will actually be hosted under the new circumstances. BCCI members are likely to demand that India should at least do away with the tours to the West Indies in 2016 and 2017, at the working committee meeting on October 21. India are supposed to play four Tests in the West Indies in July-August 2016, and then return in July 2017 to play five ODIs and a T20. |

New Delhi, October 19 This team is better in handling pressure: Ganguly
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly said that the current side is better adept in responding to difficult situations than before. “In 2003, we lost to the best Australian side under Ricky Ponting. But today, the Indian team won’t buckle under pressure,” Ganguly said. Ganguly remembered the loss against Australia in a one-sided final in 2003, saying, “Stones were thrown at us after the Johannesburg loss. We Indians react under pressure. But we are used to it (pressure). You have to deal with it.” Sri Lanka's 1996 World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga said that India's 1983 Prudential Cup triumph inspired him. “When I saw Kapil Dev holding the Cup in 1983, I was inspired. I thought, if a team like India, which was devoid of stars barring Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil, can beat the mighty West Indies then why can't Sri Lanka win the World Cup. And we did it in 1996,” Ranatunga said. — Agencies |
Serena slams Russian chief for ‘sexist’ slur
SINGAPORE, October 19 The WTA took swift action and fined Tarpishchev $25,000 and disqualified him from working in an organisational capacity for a year on Saturday after he made the comments on Russian State Television on Friday. Tarpishchev, who is also an International Olympic Committee member, made an official apology later after a WTA demand to do so but that was not enough for a clearly unhappy Williams. “I thought they were very insensitive and extremely sexist as well as racist at the same time. I thought they were in a way bullying,” Williams told reporters in Singapore on Sunday. “I've done the best that I can do, and that's all I can say. So I just wasn't very happy with his comments. I think a lot of people weren’t happy as well. But the WTA and the USTA (United States Tennis Association) did a wonderful job of making sure that — in this day of age, 2014 for someone with his power, it's really unacceptable to make such bullying remarks.” Appearing on a chat show, the programme host said to Tarpishchev: “I was at the Olympics, where Maria Sharapova was in the final, playing with one, with one of the....” before the RTF head responded by saying “Williams brothers”. WTA chief executive Stacy Allaster said the comments were “insulting, demeaning and have absolutely no place on our sport”. — Reuters |
ISL: Delhi hold Kolkata to a 1-1 draw
kolkata, October 19 After a barren but closely-contested first half, the home team took the lead in the 49th minute when midfielder Jofre converted a penalty but Dynamos restored parity through Pavel Elias (73rd minute). Atletico, with seven points from three matches, maintained their position at the top of the standings while Dynamos were fifth with two draws from two matches. Kolkata’s icon Luis Garcia had to be substituted at half-time for a hamstring complaint. But that didn’t diminish their attacking strength as Jofre continued to ask questions of the Delhi defence. Chowrasia finishes 5th
Shoots a 67 in last round to end at nine-under, tied with Ernie Els
Hong Kong, October 19 It was Chowrasia’s fourth top-five finish on the Asian Tour this year and he has also finished in the top-10 twice on European Tour. “I feel my game is coming around and I am playing with greater confidence,” said Chowrasia, who finished at nine-under 271, four shots behind winner Australian Scott Hend (67), who beat Filipino Angelo Que (66) in a play-off after both were tied at 13-under 267. Rahil Gangjee (66) and Jyoti Randhawa (72) were tied for 15th at six-under 274, while the fourth Indian who made the cut, Shiv Kapur, was tied 20th at five-under 275. “I was happy with the way I finished each round, though the start was somewhat weak,” said Chowrasia. “Of course I made a mistake on the last and ended with a bogey today, otherwise my game is looking good. I am looking forward to playing in Macau next week.” “I felt I had a chance. When I saw the leaderboard after 16 I was two behind (he was playing six groups ahead of the leaders Hend and Marcus Fraser). I had a birdie on 17th and that brought me closer, so obviously I pressed a little bit. But on the 18th, I hit my tee shot left and made a bogey.” Big-hitting Hend holed a five-foot par putt at the 18th green in the first extra hole after Que bogeyed following a poor chip from the greenside at the venerable Hong Kong Golf Club. It was Hend’s sixth Asian Tour victory and his first on the European Tour, which was worth $216,660. He joins an illustrious list of Hong Kong Open champions that includes Major winners Bernhard Langer, Greg Norman, Peter Thomson, Tom Watson, Jose Maria Olazabal, Padraig Harrington and Ian Woosnam. Victory was sweet for the Aussie as he produced a wonderful par save from a plugged lie in the greenside bunker on 18 during regulation play to sign for a closing 67 and tie Que on 13-under 267 aggregate. Ireland's Kevin Phelan closed with a 66 for third place while England's Mark Foster was a further shot back in fourth position. South African star Ernie Els (69) settled for a share of fifth place on 271 with Chowrasia and overnight leader Marcus Fraser (72). — PTI |

CA sets up amnesty period to report fixing suspicions
Melbourne, October 19 Cricketers face bans of up to five years if they are found to have failed to report information relating to a breach of CA's anti-corruption code but in an Australian first have been told they will be spared from penalty if they come forward with any evidence from their careers by the end of November. The move comes as anti-corruption investigators prepare to confront the threat of match and spot fixing at next year’s World Cup. International Cricket Council last year signed a memorandum of understanding with the Australian Federal Police in a bid to assist them in combating corruption in the showpiece tournament to be held in February-March next year. The amnesty period was directed at getting information or suspicions that current international and state players may have from throughout their careers, the report said. Cricket Australia’s senior manager of integrity Iain Roy said the impunity offered to players in the reporting period until November 30 was established to urge cricketers to tell officials about “any suspicious activity that doesn't feel right” and “covering all periods”. While Roy said there was no suggestion of Australians involved in illegal activity, the threat of corruption was “very real”. — Agencies |
