Chandigarh, October 18
Ten persons, who recently returned from African countries or the Middle East, are under surveillance for Ebola. The Central Government had sent a list of 25 such persons, out of them 15 were found to be carrying no virus.

All these persons reported at a district hospital for a check-up daily. A health worker visited their houses to enquire about any Ebola-related symptoms. However, they were not kept in isolation.

Vini Mahajan, Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, said there was no fear of Ebola in the state so far. Talking to The Tribune on the sidelines of a regional colloquium “Pure food: A fundamental right”, she said a three-week surveillance was a must for those returning from Ebola-affected countries. “We have stationed special teams at the Amritsar airport for examining those returning from the affected countries. A special isolation unit has also been set up,” she added.

Dr Karanjit Singh, Director, Health Services, said the Centre was updating list of persons returning from African countries or the Middle East. “We have set up isolation rooms in all hospitals. Special kits, medicines have been arranged to quarantine any suspected patient,” he said.

He said 15 persons, some of them members of a peace-keeping force, were monitored daily and found carrying no virus. “The remaining 10 persons are under similar surveillance. They are reporting daily at a district hospital. We also send a health worker to their houses to check any Ebola symptoms. A monitoring cell is also operational at the Chandigarh airport,” he added.

He said there was no need to keep all those returning from abroad in isolation. “Only those showing Ebola symptoms can be quarantined,” he said, adding that the state was well-equipped to handle the problem.

Gurdaspur, October 18
Mystery shrouds the death of an Army man posted in Tibri cantonment. Gurdaspur police officials said they were awaiting the brother of the deceased before registering a case. The deceased, Naveen Chander (40) of Uttar Pradesh, is survived by his wife, a daughter (14) and a son (12). He worked as a havildar in the 81st Armoured Division.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gurpreet Singh Toor, Superintendent of Police (D) JS Kainth and senior officials of the Puranashala police station reached the spot in the morning. “At this stage, it is difficult to say anything. The deceased was a heavy drinker. He was undergoing treatment at the Pathankot Military Hospital till a few days ago. Some bottles of liquor were found near the body. I have formed various teams to investigate the incident from different angles,” the SSP said.

Chandigarh, October 18
Senior Congress leader and Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh has opposed the Union Government's proposal to import potatoes. He claimed the step would destroy the already strained potato farming in the country, particularly in Punjab.

In a statement, Rana said thousands of potato growers in Doaba had to destroy their produce every year due to lack of better prices and storage facilities.

Rana said it was wrong to start potato import now as the consignment would only arrive within a month, a period when domestic crop too would be ready for harvest. He claimed the prices of potatoes had stabilised and there was no point importing these now.

CPS Sidhu approaches Modi, BJP chief over ‘raw deal’ to her
Tribune News Service

Amritsar, October 18
Two days after the Amritsar SAD leaders targeted former MP Navjot Singh Sidhu, his wife and Chief Parliamentary Secretary Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu today said she had given each and every detail to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah as to how she was being "meted out a raw deal" by the Akali Dal-led state government vis-à-vis development works in her Amritsar-East constituency.

Talking to mediapersons here today, Dr Sidhu said the Akalis should talk about the ground realities instead of resorting to blame game.

She said Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal had promised a grant of Rs 100 crore for her constituency, but didn't release a single penny. She said, "There are around 28 issues of my Assembly segment that are hanging fire for no reason. These include even the issues related to the Health Department. Many of these don't require a penny to be spent."

She said she had been making rounds of the Food and Civil Supplies Department for issuing BPL cards in her segment, but they could not even identify the prospective beneficiaries under the scheme.

She also hit out at the government for failing to deliver on Shagun Scheme and old-age pension. "When you don't have the money, why don't you admit it?" she said.

Quality street food a challenge: FSSAI chief
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 18
Controlling the quality of street food in the country is one of the biggest challenges faced by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

FSSAI Chairperson K Chandramouli said the organisation was setting standards for street food. The aim was to ensure availability of hygienic street food, which is consumed not just by locals but also by foreign tourists.

He was talking to The Tribune on the sidelines of a Regional Colloquium “Pure food: A fundamental right”. “Setting standards is an ongoing process. We are in the process of not just ensuring good food, but also allowing consumers an opportunity to make an informed choice. Our biggest challenge is street food. Vendors need to be educated. They have to use potable water and cook food in hygienic environment,” he said.

Hussan Lal, Commissioner (Food), Punjab, said penalties worth Rs 67 lakh were imposed on those not adhering to standards set by the FSSAI. “About 500 persons have been penalised and another 500 are facing different charges,” he said.

Dr Sunita Narain, Chairperson of the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), said, “People are becoming increasingly dependent on processed food, so there is a need to regulate its standard. The labels on food packs should mention the contents clearly.”
