Ludhiana, October 18 Galib is survived by his wife Amarjeet Kaur, son Karanjit Singh, daughters Manjeeta Kaur, Karamjit Kaur and Gurpreet Kaur. His cremation would take place at his ancestral Galib Kalan village around noon tomorrow. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal visited Galib’s house near Barewal today to convey condolences to the bereaved family. “Galib was a balanced and an experienced leader, a true champion of Punjab, Punjabi and Punjabiat,” said Badal. Politicians cutting across party lines paid tributes to the departed leader. Among them were Cabinet Minister Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, MLAs Prem Mittal, Bharat Bhushan Ashu, Darshan Singh Shivalik and SR Kler, former MP Amrik Singh Aliwal, SAD district presidents Madan Lal Bagga and Harbhajan Singh Dang, senior Akali leader Harvir Singh Ayali and councillors Bhupinder Singh Bhinda, Balkar Singh Sandhu and Sanjay

10 under watch for Ebola in state
Chandigarh, October 18 All these persons reported at a district hospital for a check-up daily. A health worker visited their houses to enquire about any Ebola-related symptoms. However, they were not kept in isolation. Vini Mahajan, Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, said there was no fear of Ebola in the state so far. Talking to The Tribune on the sidelines of a regional colloquium “Pure food: A fundamental right”, she said a three-week surveillance was a must for those returning from Ebola-affected countries. “We have stationed special teams at the Amritsar airport for examining those returning from the affected countries. A special isolation unit has also been set up,” she added. Dr Karanjit Singh, Director, Health Services, said the Centre was updating list of persons returning from African countries or the Middle East. “We have set up isolation rooms in all hospitals. Special kits, medicines have been arranged to quarantine any suspected patient,” he said. He said 15 persons, some of them members of a peace-keeping force, were monitored daily and found carrying no virus. “The remaining 10 persons are under similar surveillance. They are reporting daily at a district hospital. We also send a health worker to their houses to check any Ebola symptoms. A monitoring cell is also operational at the Chandigarh airport,” he added. He said there was no need to keep all those returning from abroad in isolation. “Only those showing Ebola symptoms can be quarantined,” he said, adding that the state was well-equipped to handle the problem. 2 months on, missing NRI girl untraced
Tarn Taran, October 18 The girl, Prabhsimran Kaur, along with her parents Gurlal Singh and Mukhwinder Kaur and brother Simran Singh, came to India three months ago. Gurlal was ill and the family came to India from America for his treatment. They had been putting up at the Golden Temple ‘sarai’ (inn). During ‘sewa’, the girl reportedly came in contact with two boys who were not known to the family. Her parents have accused the duo of abducting her on August 12. They alleged the boys coerced their minor daughter to get along Rs 1.5 lakh and 200 US dollars. Investigating officer Gurdeep Singh said efforts were on to trace the trio. — OC |

Mystery shrouds death of Army man
Gurdaspur, October 18 Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gurpreet Singh Toor, Superintendent of Police (D) JS Kainth and senior officials of the Puranashala police station reached the spot in the morning. “At this stage, it is difficult to say anything. The deceased was a heavy drinker. He was undergoing treatment at the Pathankot Military Hospital till a few days ago. Some bottles of liquor were found near the body. I have formed various teams to investigate the incident from different angles,” the SSP said. As the havildar was not having cordial relations with his wife, the police are also investigating the suicide theory. Although the SSP denied it, sources said there were signs of struggle near the spot. His body has been kept at the Tibri cantonment military hospital. The SSP said a case would be registered at the Puranashal police station only after the brother of the deceased arrived. |

Suicide threat keeps cops on their toes
Tarn Taran, October 18 The sisters had lodged a complaint with the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) against the Station House Officer (SHO), Patti. Belonging to the Dalit community, they alleged that the SHO and his two gunmen had threatened them to withdraw a case of molestation registered against his two other gunmen three months ago. The sisters alleged the trio also used casteist remarks against them. They said they had been moving from pillar to post for more than a month to seek action against the policemen. They had warned the SSP in the letter that they would commit suicide if “justice” was not provided to them. Rashpal Singh Ghumman, SP, assured them that the inquiry being conducted in the matter would be concluded shortly. The police also made special arrangements to send them back to their residence in Patti. Gurwinder Singh, Patti SHO, refuted the allegations as “false”. Congress MLA opposes move to import potatoes
Chandigarh, October 18 In a statement, Rana said thousands of potato growers in Doaba had to destroy their produce every year due to lack of better prices and storage facilities. Rana said it was wrong to start potato import now as the consignment would only arrive within a month, a period when domestic crop too would be ready for harvest. He claimed the prices of potatoes had stabilised and there was no point importing these now. |

CPS Sidhu approaches Modi, BJP chief over ‘raw deal’ to her
Amritsar, October 18 Talking to mediapersons here today, Dr Sidhu said the Akalis should talk about the ground realities instead of resorting to blame game. She said Deputy CM Sukhbir Badal had promised a grant of Rs 100 crore for her constituency, but didn't release a single penny. She said, "There are around 28 issues of my Assembly segment that are hanging fire for no reason. These include even the issues related to the Health Department. Many of these don't require a penny to be spent." She said she had been making rounds of the Food and Civil Supplies Department for issuing BPL cards in her segment, but they could not even identify the prospective beneficiaries under the scheme. She also hit out at the government for failing to deliver on Shagun Scheme and old-age pension. "When you don't have the money, why don't you admit it?" she said. |

Quality street food a challenge: FSSAI chief
Chandigarh, October 18 FSSAI Chairperson K Chandramouli said the organisation was setting standards for street food. The aim was to ensure availability of hygienic street food, which is consumed not just by locals but also by foreign tourists. He was talking to The Tribune on the sidelines of a Regional Colloquium “Pure food: A fundamental right”. “Setting standards is an ongoing process. We are in the process of not just ensuring good food, but also allowing consumers an opportunity to make an informed choice. Our biggest challenge is street food. Vendors need to be educated. They have to use potable water and cook food in hygienic environment,” he said. Hussan Lal, Commissioner (Food), Punjab, said penalties worth Rs 67 lakh were imposed on those not adhering to standards set by the FSSAI. “About 500 persons have been penalised and another 500 are facing different charges,” he said. Dr Sunita Narain, Chairperson of the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), said, “People are becoming increasingly dependent on processed food, so there is a need to regulate its standard. The labels on food packs should mention the contents clearly.” |

Golden Temple plaza opens on Oct 22
Amritsar, October 18 Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ravi Bhagat said the Badals would reach Amritsar on Wednesday and the inaugural function was scheduled to start at 6.30 pm. “The preparations are underway for the ceremony even as finishing touches are being given to the plaza,” he said. The DC said "ardaas" would be performed during the ceremony and subsequently, the plaza would be thrown open to devotees. He said they had already carried out a trial run of the new fountain and lights. He said the work on the three gates of the plaza was at the final stage. Officials said it would take another year for the completion of the second phase of the project. They said the opening of the first phase of the plaza would facilitate easier movement of devotees. Tight security arrangements are being made for the ceremony in view of the fact that it would take place just a day before Diwali, which witnesses a huge rush of devotees in the holy city. The Golden Temple entrance plaza would facilitate a sprawling open space spread over 8,250 sq m right in front of the holy shrine’s main entrance to pave the way for easy and hassle-free movement of devotees. Sukhbir calls on Gadkari over road projects
New Delhi, October 18 Badal had called on Gadkari here to discuss pendency of road projects vis-a-vis pending wildlife clearances from the Ministry of Environment and Forest. The minister promised to initiate pending road projects after a meeting with senior officers and the NHAI at the earliest, a statement issued by the Punjab Government said. Sukhbir said the NHAI had finalised the DPR for six-laning from Sector 39 junction in Chandigarh up to Samrala Chowk in Ludhiana. — PTI |
