CFA last resort for city players
Chandigarh, October 15 Despite having a vast infrastructure for promoting soccer in city, the standards are only limited to the Chandigarh Football Academy. In the recently concluded All-India Championship held at Chandigarh, out of three local teams, no team cleared even the league stage of the championship. Delhi Public School lost their all matches while the team of Chandigarh Football Association won one match and lost another. Meanwhile, DAV Senior Secondary School also registered win in one match while tasted defeat in the other two. CFA pulled back their name, this year, due to non-availability of the junior batch. The team recently finished at the runner-up spot in the (U-14) Subroto Cup Football Tournament. “In Chandigarh, we have many professional academies. And notably, an academy is being run under the name of former Indian team skipper. We wonder what they are doing. The Sports Authority of India has its two main centres while other schools have their own academies. However, when it comes to performance, no one is coming forward to make city’s stake atop. In a city like Chandigarh, where all the facilities are easily approachable, we are only left with CFA to rely on,” said a member of players’ association of Chandigarh. The recent performance of the local teams also raises serious concern over the quality of exposure for junior level players in city. “The players are not enough mature to face such tough competitions. The teams coming here are professionals. And fielding our players without any exposure is nothing but imprudence. The local soccer association should join hands and organise seasoned practice session so that soccer doesn’t stay restricted to state-run CFA,” said Suraj Minchand, a senior level soccer player. |
