Kosli (Rewari), October 5
The BJP’s campaign got a boost in the Ahirwal region after Union Minister of State for Defence, Rao Inderjit Singh, kicked off his poll campaign in favour of the party candidates from Kosli Assembly segment. Inderjit’s younger brother, Rao Yadavendra Singh, is also contesting the election on a Congress ticket from here.

Rao Inderjit addressed a public meeting for the first time after declaration of Assembly polls and sought votes for BJP nominee Vikram Thekedar. He also announced that his daughter Aarti Rao would campaign for the Saffron party’s candidates in Ahirwal.

“Wholehearted support by Rao Inderjit to the BJP candidates will give a fillip to BJP’s prospects in Ahirwal as he has a strong political base in every Assembly segment of Mahendragarh and Rewari districts,” said political pundits.

Notably, Rao Inderjit was upset over non-allotment of the BJP ticket to his daughter for which he had been lobbying hard. He wanted to field Aarti from Rewari, but the party high command pitted Randhir Kaprivaas against six-time MLA and Haryana Irrigation Minister Capt Ajay Yadav.

Earlier, addressing the gathering, he said: “It is the contest between dharma and adharma as my brother is in fray on a rival party’s ticket and I have to campaign against him. I will fulfil my dharma to ensure BJP’s victory in Kosli.”

Charging the Hooda government of committing discrimination with South Haryana in terms of development, the minister exhorted the people that the time had come to teach a lesson to the government in the Assembly polls for not providing the region its due right of development.

“Without support of the Union Government, the state regime cannot do much in terms of development hence bringing the BJP in power in Haryana has now become essential to user in new era of development in South region,” said Rao Inderjit.

After Kosli, he sought votes in Sehlang and Rambass village of Ateli and Sihma and Patikra villages of Narnaul today.

Rabri addressed the rally at Dhaaruhera industrial town of the Rewari Assembly segment here today. Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav could not attend the rally because of ill-health.

More than 10,000 migrant labourers from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar work in several industrial units of Dhaaruhera town.

Speaking in a chaste Bhojpuri, Rabri said Capt Yadav’s victory for the seventh time was necessary to keep momentum of development going in Rewari.

She said the Modi government had “failed” to live up to people’s expectation. “The BJP secured power by luring people with their false dreams. The reality is since coming to power, it has done nothing for people.”

Rajya Sabha member Kumari Selja claimed that there was no Modi wave this time and the Congress would form the government for third time.

Capt Yadav harped on development works during the Congress regime.

My sister got ticket on merit: Sushma Swaraj
Tribune News Service

Safidon, October 5
Apparently unhappy with her name hitting the headlines for playing a main role in getting party ticket for her sister from Safidon constituency, Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj Sunday tried to clarify by reading the resume of her sister on stage. She insisted that she did not play any role in ticket allotment and her sister got it on merit.

“My sister Vandana Sharma has not got the ticket because of me, but because she deserved it. Vandana has a PhD degree in politics and long experience in teaching. After taking voluntary retirement, she toured the country and worked for the party. She is a committed party worker,” the minister said in Safidon while addressing a public rally to seek votes for her sister, 11 years younger to her.

Strengthening the claim of her sister, Sushma said her sister could launch an agitation to fight for the rights of the people and present her case properly for the welfare of residents in front of the authorities as she was well educated and had political experience.

She left no stone unturned in her promises to the constituency if her sister got elected.

She claimed that till date no party has taken steps for the development of all of Haryana. “Vandana is not only my younger sister, but like my daughter as well.

She has the right to insist for anything and she can get big development work done after getting elected from here,” said Sushma.

She promised hike in old-age pension from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000, free education for girls with proper security, unemployment allowance for the youth and sports stadiums in each block with required coaches.

“Elect the BJP like you all did during the General Election. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has big development plans for Haryana. Let him execute those,” she said.

Randeep S Surjewala, Congress nominee, Kaithal

Undeterred, Congress troubleshooter fights on

Tribune News Service

Kaithal, October 5
Kicking up dust, making its way through narrow village streets, cheered by little children racing alongside, Congress candidate and high-profile Haryana minister Randeep Singh Surjewala’s motorcade arrives in Noch village for the second public meeting of the day.

Even before he can open the door and alight, enthusiastic supporters holding garlands of marigold are elbowing each other to be by his side as he makes his way to the mike.

Handshakes, mobile clicks, pink turbans and red, women watching from rooftops and children waving Congress flags greet him at this meeting like they do at all the others he addresses.

Haryana Government’s troubleshooter for over nine years, Surjewala, fighting his second election from Kaithal, knows this election is different from the many challengers he has won.

At a time when the Congress is at its lowest, he faces a belligerent BJP and a resurgent INLD. The flags atop houses surrounding the meeting venue announce the divided loyalties, but Surjewala is undeterred.

His confidence comes from the turnaround he has been able to effect in Kaithal by ushering in “unprecedented development”.

The crowd at the meeting acknowledges his contribution. He plays on it long enough to make it count. “Kaithal is every other district’s envy. I seek votes for my work. The other candidates in the fray will not even be able to change the bulbs in lights I have installed in the next five years,” he says to a round of applause.

Ridiculing the BJP’s “achhe din”, Surjewala knows he pulls the right strings when he says, “The prices are sky high. In Rs 5, you only get half a tomato. The government is reducing petrol prices, but seems indifferent to diesel prices that will benefit the farmers.”

The INLD is not spared as he takes a jibe at the INLD leadership for not recognising party candidates. The BJP and the INLD have fielded Rao Surender and Kailash Bhagat, respectively.

Urging the people to create “leaders” by sending back the same face repeatedly, Surjewala appeals, “I have come very far. I need a little push to bring the power centre to Kaithal. The decision whether or you will run the state is yours,” he announces, appealing to their desire to wrest power and control from elsewhere in the state and bring it to their backyard.

Before he departs, there is a second round of chaos with villagers, particularly youngsters rushing to assure him support. Like in Khurana and Jaswanti villages, a group of motorycyle borne youth shout, “Haryana ke deep ki, jai bolo Randeep ki”, waving Congress flags and showeruing flower petals lead him to Balwanti village, where he makes a fervent appeal for votes even as the sun has set and the lights are on. With 10 to 15 public meetings packed in a day, besides door-to-door campaigning he has drawn up, Surjewala is out every morning at 10 and back only in the wee hours the next day. Holding meetings the entire night, he campaigns for 16 hours on an average with no sign of fatigue.

Constituency watch: Radaur
Flood-prone segment, but no measures in place
Shiv Kumar Sharma

Radaur, October 3
Since the inception of Haryana, the Congress has only won once from this segment which is in Yamunanagar district but is a part of the Kurukshetra Parliamentary constituency. It used to be known as Babain till 1972.

Chand Ram was the only candidate who was won in 1967. He again became MLA in 1968 and 1972 but as an Independent candidate. In 1977, Lehri Singh was elected on the Janata Party ticket and Ram Singh became an Independent MLA in 1982.

Ambala MP Ratan Lal Kataria was also elected BJP MLA in 1987. Lehri Singh again won in 1991 but on Haryana Vikas Party ticket. Banta Ram was elected Samta Party MLA in 1996 and on the INLD ticket in 2000. In 2009, the INLD retained this which was won by Dr Bishan Lal Saini.

Problems aplenty

A majority of the villages are situated along the Yamunanagar-Ladwa- Delhi road and the Yamunanagar-Jathlana-Karnal road which witness a huge volume of traffic. But they have neither been strengthened nor widened. The stretch of Yamunanagar-Ladwa-Delhi

The residents are angry as no development has taken place in this area. A number of roads are potholed, especially the link roads. Fatal accidents are an everyday occurrence.

Although Radaur has become a hub of educational institutes but all of them are in the private sector. A government college or a university is one of the long pending demands of the people.

No employment avenues

When Naveen Jindal was the MP from Kurukshetra, he did a lot of social work but he too failed to bring any big project which could generate employment for the youth of the area. The economy of the area is agriculture based as there is no major industry here.

There is also need to upgrade the CHC order to provide better health services.

Floods wreck havoc

The Yamuna wreck havocs in more than 50 villages of the area every year. It damages crops as well as washes the land of the farmers. The UP government has constructed a mud dam on its side, but the Haryana government has not done so to save its people from the flood fury.

Multi-cornered contests in Panipat seats

Tribune News Service

Panipat, October 5
Each of the four Assembly segments of the Panipat Lok Sabha seat will witness multi-cornered contests. As many as 56 candidates are in the fray. As many as 23 contestants are trying their luck in Panipat rural, 13 in Samalkha, 11 in Panipat urban and nine in Israna (SC).

Turncoats hold the key

The BJP, which maintained a significant lead in each segment during the recent parliamentary elections, failed to win a single seat during the 2009 Assembly polls. The candidates of the Congress (Balbir Pal Shah from Panipat Urban), the INLD (Krishan Lal Panwar from Israna), the HJC (Dharam Singh Chhokhar from Samalkha) and Independent (OP Jain from Panipat Rural) emerged victorious in 2009.

This time, only two sitting MLAs, Chhokhar and Krishan Lal Panwar, are trying their luck. Chhokhar is in the fray from Samalkha on Congress ticket. He had won on the HJC ticket from the same seat last time. However, later, he and four HJC MLAs joined the Congress.

Similarly, Panwar won on the INLD ticket from Israna in 2009. Now, he is in the fray on BJP ticket. After denial of ticket, he joined the BJP during the Vijay Sankalp rally in Mahendragarh on August 14 in the presence of party national chief Amit Shah, where he was declared the party candidate.

While both turncoats are hopeful of their victory, several of the electors of are not happy with their political opportunism. Two sitting MLAs, Balbir Pal Shah of the Congress and independent candidate OP Jain, are not trying their luck from Panipat Urban and Panipat Rural, respectively, this time.

However, Balbir's brother, Varinder Kumar Shah, is in the fray on Congress ticket from Panipat Urban. Jain has decided not to contest this time as he had been in jail for several months for abetment to suicide.

Prominent contestants are Khushi Ram Jaglan (Congress), Mahipal Dhanda (BJP), Nishan Singh Malik (INLD), Independent Dhara Singh Rawal and HJC rebel Sanjay Kadian from Panipat rural, Varinder Shah (Congress), Rohita Rewri (BJP) and Neelam Narang (INLD) from Panipat City, KL Panwar (BJP), Balwan Singh Valmiki (INLD) and Balbir Valmiki (Congress) from Israna (SC) and Dharam Singh Chhokhar (Congress), Ram Bhateri Rawal (INLD) and Shashikant Kaushik (BJP) from Samalkha.

This segment is largest constituency of Mewat comprising Feorzpur Jhirka block along with Nagina. It has largest number of voters in the district but this does not make any change the fate of this segment which is plagued by low human development indices. Be it education, health, public transportation, law and order, drinking water, the area is devoid of any development as other parts of Mewat. In fact, the people are fed up of hollow promises and take any political statement with a large pinch of salt.

Setting up of a university has been the major demand of the residents here but it is still to see the light of the day. A regional centre of the MDU was inaugurated in Nagina block but it is still not functional and the sole college offers only undergraduate courses. The residents here see higher education as the only way to their development and are sending their wards to other places for higher education.

Politically, this constituency may not witness caste influenced voting as no Hindu candidate has been fielded by any party this time. There are around 50,000 Hindu voters here.

The stakes are high for all contesting candidates but a close fight is on the cards among INLD incumbent Naseem Ahmed, the Congress's Azad Mohammad, BJP's Alam and Habib- Ur- Rehman of Gopal Kanda's HLP.

It may be noted that Mamman had contested from the Congress ticket the last time but is now in the battle field as an Independent.

Cong rule byword for land scams: Shah
Charges INLD with dictatorial style of functioning
Our Correspondent

Sonepat, Ocober 5
BJP president Amit Shah Sunday termed the 10-year rule of the Congress in Haryana as a period of land scams with farmers as the ultimate losers. He asked the people to write the script of Congress defeat in the Assembly elections.

He was addressing an election meeting in Gannaur in support of the party candidate Jitender Singh Malik. “You have ousted the most corrupt government of the Congress-led UPA at the Centre,” he said. He added that now it was the turn of the state government to go.

He chided Bhupinder Singh Hooda government for misleading the people by propagating Haryana as the number one state.

Shah said the state was number 20, 18 and 13 in terms of literacy, agriculture and rural development, respectively. Hooda served two terms by obliging the Gandhi family at the cost of farmers, Shah alleged.

He did not spare the INLD, saying its rule had been blamed for “gundagardi” and dictatorial style of functioning. It used to loot and beat up the people during its rule, he alleged.

He took a dig on Om Prakash Chautala’s statement of taking oath in Tihar Jail and said the people should teach a lesson to such persons.

“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the BJP is committed to providing a vibrant, clean and transparent government at the Centre,” he said.

He appealed to voters to bring the BJP to power with full majority in the state to have a government of the people, for the people and of the people.

He claimed that the BJP had fielded candidates with a clean image and the people should give them the chance to serve the people in better ways under the supervision of Modi.

He also addressed election meetings at Kharkhoda and Baroda in support of party candidates Kuldeep Kakran and Baljit Singh Malik, respectively. MPs Vijay Goyal, Anurag Thakur and Ramesh Kaushik also spoke.

Riding a camel during his poll campaign has put Chief Parliamentary Secretary (CPS) and Congress nominee from Mahendragarh Rao Daan Singh into trouble. Sources said the Mahendragarh returning officer (RO) has put Rao Daan on notice, wherein he has been asked to file his explanation within the next 24 hours.

The RO has taken the action following the complaint filed by Naresh Kadian, chairman, People for Animals, Haryana, in this regard.

In his complaint attached with a picture, Kadian said Rao Daan carried out his campaign by riding a camel at Unchi Bhadore village in Mahendragarh district yesterday.

“The camel was abused with a rope crossed through its nose, violating Section 3 and 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal Act, 1960. The animal is neither a political tool nor a vehicle of pride,” he said.

Kadian said as per the directives of the ECI, the use of animals such as horses, ponies, donkeys, elephants, camels, bulls for election campaign was subject to cruelty in different ways. Moreover, the ECI has issued an advisory, asking the parties not to use any animals for campaign in any manner, he said. The complainant has sought registration of an FIR against Rao Daan.

With political parties making a beeline to seek his support, Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his sanitation drive today.

Addressing the written questions of the mediapersons during his weekly congregation at the Dera, Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh said he liked Modi’s initiative to make the country clean. PM to address 3 rallies today
To campaign in Hisar, Kurukshetra and Faridabad
Tribune News Service

Rohtak, October 5
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address election rallies in Hisar, Kurukshetra and Faridabad tomorrow. A BJP spokesman said Sunday the Prime Minister would visit Rohtak and three other places in Haryana on October 8 as part of his electoral campaign.

Party leaders Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj, Amit Shah and Navjot Singh Sidhu would address rallies in different parts of the state in the coming days, he added.

Hisar BJP gears up for Modi’s rally

Hisar: Hisar is all geared up for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally on Monday. The district authorities have made security arrangements, while the BJP leaders are leaving no stone unturned to make it a grand show.

Modi’s rally in Hisar is significant as this has been the weakest turf for the party for last many years. The BJP has been playing a supporting role to Kuldeep Bishnoi in alliance with the HJC. Now the party has fielded its own candidates on all seven Assembly segments.

While the party has fielded turncoats, including Chhatarpal Singh in Hansi, Seema Gaibipur Uklana (reserved) and Hari Singh in Nalwa, the senior party leader Capt Abhimanyu and district unit chief Kamal Gupta are in the fray in the Narnaund and Hisar Assembly constituencies, respectively. The party has also banked on loyal workers, including Surender Punia (Barwala) and Karan Singh (Adampur).

Party campaign committee in charge Kailash Vijayvargiya expressed confidence that Modi’s rally would turn the tables on rivals in Hisar. He said the PM would address the rally at the new grain market and will spend about two hours in the town. “We would take up the local problems and issues with him,” he said.

Meanwhile, the district administration is busy making arrangements for the PM visit. The road to the new grain market, which was in a dilapidated condition, is being repaired.

Stage set for Kurukshetra rally

Kurukshetra: Kurukshetra is ready for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Vijay Sankalp rally on Monday. Local leaders are leaving no stone unturned to ensure a record turnout. Bring BJP to power with majority: Chouhan
Satish Seth

Kaithal, October 5
Shivraj Singh Chouhan urged state voters to give a clear mandate to the BJP in the coming Assembly polls so that the state could have a strong government with absolute majority.

Chouhan said this while addressing a meeting organised in favour of Kaithal BJP candidate Rao Surendra Singh, here today.

He thanked the people for electing the BJP at the Centre with absolute majority and said now there was a decisive government led by Prime minister Narendra Modi at the Centre, so the people of the state should not miss the opportunity and bring BJP to power in Haryana.

Only a strong government in the state could help in ensuring speedy development and implementation of welfare schemes for various sections of the society, he said.

The BJP governments in MP, Gujarat and Chhatisgarh were making progress and had launched various schemes for the welfare of the people, he added.

Shiv Raj Singh said that due to the faulty policies of the UPA government at the Centre, the country faced problems on many fronts and scams amounting to lakhs of rupees surfaced, which tarnished the image of the country.

The present Haryana government had failed miserably to provide remunerative price of crops to farmers and power supply to agriculture sector was irregular and inadequate, which had a negative effect on the economic conditions of the farmers in the state.

He said BJP if voted to power in Haryana would ensure zero percent interest to farmers like his home state Madhya Pardesh and give them regular power supply.

He took the Hooda-led Congress government and the previous INLD government to task for providing jobs to their close aides and ignoring merit.

Raj Kumar Saini also addressed this meeting and asked the people to vote for BJP candidate Rao Surendra Singh. Earlier Shiv Raj Singh Chouhan addressed another meeting in Cheeka, in favour of BJP Guhla candidate Kulwant Bajigar.

Manish Sirhindi
Tribune News Service

Ambala, October 5
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj SinghChouhan today trained guns on Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda accusing him of following anti-farmers policies and of having failed to safe guard the interests of the common man in the state.

Addressing an election rally in support of the BJP nominee from Mullana, Santosh Sawran at Barara today, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister said a large number of farmers from Haryana had now shifted to Madhya Pradesh, courtesy the unfriendly policies of the Hooda government that had proved detrimental to their interests.

Lauding the state farmers, he said they had inspired the MP farmers to take up advance practices to double their yield. He said there was a time when Haryana used to be number one, but under the Hooda government the state had now slipped in the tally.

He claimed that the wrong policies of the Hooda government had proved destructive for all sections of society living in the state.

Laying the road map for development that would usher in Haryana if BJP was voted to power, Chouhan said the Saffron party would ensure that farmers get interest-free loans and all sections of the society received special benefits that assisted there growth and prosperity.

Kumari Selja supporters skip Hooda rally
Manish Sirhindi
Tribune News Service

Ambala, October 5
Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda today addressed three rallies. At the Ambala rally, supporters of Rajya Sabha member Kumari Selja kept away from the event.

He accused BJP and INLD leaders of misleading the people for political gains. “To attain power, the BJP promised the moon to voters. But its performance at the Centre has belied all promises the party made,” Hooda said.

Targeting the Chautalas, he said that by claiming to take oath as Chief Minister from Tihar jail, Om Prakash Chautala was creating a false impression among the masses.

“He is not eligible to contest the Assembly elections, leave alone taking oath as the Chief Minister.

He should first get a clean chit from court and then contest elections before dreaming of becoming the Chief Minister.”

Hooda plays regional card to retain ‘chaudhar’
Sunit Dhawan
Tribune News Service

Rohtak, October 5
Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda has played the regional card to consolidate his position in the Deswali Jat belt, mainly Rohtak, Jhajjar and Sonepat districts.

At recent public meetings during his road show in the area, Hooda exhorted voters not to let go of their “raj” that they got after a long struggle of 40 years.

“Raj ki khaatir sangharsh karna padey sai aur iski rukhwal bhi karni padey sai (One has to fight to get power and it is necessary to protect the raj),” Hooda said while addressing people in the Garhi Sampla-Kiloi constituency, from where he is contesting the election.

Anti-incumbency against the Congress notwithstanding, political analysts said, the party had an edge in majority of the Assembly segments in the Rohtak Lok Sabha constituency, in addition to seats in the Sonepat parliamentary segment.

So, the Chief Minister’s camp wants to strengthen its hold in the area to win a respectable number of seats. If the leaders of other parties are able to retain their seats in view of the absence of any wave in favour of any outfit, it increases the possibility of the Hooda government for the third consecutive time.

Against this backdrop, he played the regional card by asking people to retain their “chaudhar” (influence) in these areas. Besides, he sought votes on the ground he provided jobs to thousands of youth in the state.

During his recent public meetings, Hooda maintained that he had given nearly 70,000 jobs during his tenure as Chief Minister and would continue to do so after assuming power for the third time. “If Chautala has been jailed for giving jobs, I will be hanged as I have given more jobs than him,” Hooda said.

Though Hooda did not say who were the beneficiaries of the jobs, his statement made in his home segment lent credence to his opponents’ allegations that he had given jobs to the people of his constituency.

Lashing out at Chautala

During his recent public meetings, Hooda maintained that he had given nearly 70,000 jobs during his tenure as Chief Minister and would continue to do so after assuming power for the third time. “If Chautala has been jailed for giving jobs, I will be hanged as I have given more jobs than him,” Hooda said.

INLD to hit back at Cong
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, October 5
Facing aggression from the Congress in the election campaign for the Assembly polls in Haryana, the INLD has decided to hit back. Party vice-president Antram Tanwar said Sunday, “The INLD will mount a blistering campaign against the Congress and highlight its 10 years of misrule to counter its criticism of its supremo Om Prakash Chautala.”

A Haryana Congress leader said the party had decided to sharpen its attack on the INLD after getting feedback about the public mood.

Since Saturday, Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda reportedly raised the pitch against Chautala for the latter’s statement on September 25 in Jind.During the rally, Chautala said in his speech, “I will take oath of office as Chief Minister in jail after the elections in Haryana.” Hooda’s refrain during the election campaign is: “The country is governed by the rule of law. Chautala cannot become Chief Minister in the present situation.”

In order to remove confusion among Jats and peasants, who had backed the Congress, Hooda adds: “ I am the Chief Minister. The Congress will return to power for the third consecutive term.”

Sources say the Congress strategy is based on its assessment that its supporters are silent in the face of aggressive campaign by the INLD, as has been the trend in the last two Assembly poll.

Karnal, October 5
Amid controversy with the election trail of former Chief Minister Om Parkash Chautala, who is on bail for his role in the JBT teacher recruitment scam, INLD MP Dushyant Chautala made it clear that they did not violate any rules.

“We respect the court and there is no condition in the bail of my grandfather. We are not disrespecting the court,” said the MP.

Chautala was in Karnal on Saturday to boost the morale of the party workers and called upon them to work hard for Karnal candidate Manoj Wadhwa’s victory.

After addressing party workers at Manoj Wadhwa’s election office, Dushyant Chautala took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and said, “There is no Modi wave in Haryana. If there is any wave in the state, then why does the PM have to address 10 rallies in Haryana? The results of the by-election held recently revealed the truth of the Modi wave in India.”

Claiming the INLD will form the government, he said, the people of the state have been giving their massive support to the INLD during OP Chautala’s campaign trail.

Criticising the ruling Congress in the state he said Bhupinder Singh Hooda had been making fool of the people by making false promises. Now the people of the state want the INLD government in the state and their support in the rallies have showcased their intention, he said.

‘Haryanavis will not be fooled again’

Jind: INLD candidate from Uchana Kalan, Dushyant Chautala, accused both the Congress and the BJP of making false promises to the voters and warned the leaders of these parties to not cross the ‘Laxman rekha’.

“Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda robbed the state farmers to favour Robert Vadra. Sonia Gandhi’s flop rally in Meham confirmed that Hooda has lost base in Rohtak too,” alleged Dushyant, while interacting with the mediapersons at the local INLD office in the urban estate area of the city today.

He alleged Hooda worked as chief of the ‘robbers’ gang’ and helped big businessmen to rob the state while poor farmers and other residents were targeted with the registration of false cases whenever they raised their voice against the loot of state.

Taking a dig at Hooda’s ‘Haryana No. 1’ slogan, Dushyant alleged these days Haryana was number one only in corruption, unemployment and debt.

Haryana is Paris for these UP residents
Naveen S Garewal
Tribune News Service

Manglora (Karnal), Oct 5
Former Uttar Pradesh (UP) Chief Minister Mayawati Sunday tried to hard sell the UP model of development in Haryana by asking people to vote for the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).

Hundreds of families living in UP close to the border with Haryana want their villages, falling in western UP, to be merged in Haryana to take advantage of development in Haryana, which they claim is far ahead of their state.

There are no worthwhile hospitals, schools or grain markets to sell produce for several kilometres around Baudoli, the first village in UP after crossing the Yamuna, 14 kilometres form Karnal.

Many living in Shamli district of UP travel to Karnal each day for buy goods for daily use. “The exodus from UP to Haryana for these people is akin to going abroad,” says Kuldip Singh, who has moved to Nagla chowk on the Haryana side of the Yamuna.

Poor law and order situation in UP had forced Kuldeep to move to Haryana when Mayawati was Chief Minister. He says dacoits struck his house for a few rupees and murdered his wife Charanjit Kaur, forcing him to move to Haryana.

“Even those who are lucky and have not faced any adverse law and order situation spend sleepless nights after sunset. So everyone nurtures a desire for safe life. Politicians firm UP have no appeal in Haryana because everyone knows what these politicians have done for their own states,” says Kuldeep.

The price of land in Haryana and UP, separated by the Yamuna bridge, is roughly five times, says contractor Mahinder, a resident of Laxmipura (Shamli district), who comes to Karnal everyday for work because the he makes almost twice the money he does back home.

“I cannot afford to rent or buy a house in Haryana and travel to Karnal everyday, making more money. In Karnal the daily wages for semi-skilled person is about Rs 500 compared to Rs 200 in UP,” he says.

In a lighter vein, Arvind, a travel agent, says, “Haryana is like Paris. We go to Haryana for medical check-up and students study there. Mayawati has done nothing for the people. It is ironic that she is selling the UP model in Haryana.”

People living on the border point out that the rate for bribe is Rs 20 to Rs 50 in UP whereas Haryana constable demands Rs 500, showing prosperity levels in the two states.

“Haryana gets regular power supply whereas there is an 18-hour outage in UP. We want Haryana to progress and not regress,” says Vinod, a resident of Manglora on the Haryana side. “We have been demanding that the area adjoining Haryana in UP should be transferred to Haryana in the interest of the people,” says Durga Dass, a small vendor who makes all his purchases from Haryana.

Petrol and diesel is cheaper by Rs 6 in Haryana and cattle feed is cheaper by Rs 150 per bag. No wonder, empty carts are taken to UP and laden vehicles brought to UP, says Dass.

UP politicians hardly come here to seek votes because they know that the people are going to ask transfer of the villages to Haryana. When Mayawati comes to canvass in Haryana, people can show her the plight of people on the banks of the Yamuna in UP.

campaign trail
Ram Bilas Sharma, BJP nominee from Mahendragarh

After losing thrice, Ram Bilas pins hopes on ‘Modi wave’
Pradeep Sharma
Tribune News Service

Mahendragarh, October 5
It is around 11 am on a lazy Sunday. As the cavalcade of BJP candidate and state BJP chief Ram Bilas Sharma enters the dusty lanes of Rivasa village on the outskirts of Mahendragarh, over three hours behind schedule, scores of enthusiastic youths riding motorcycles welcome him.

A couple of BJP workers signal Sharma, acknowledging crowd’s greetings from his luxury sports utility vehicle, to get down to be taken to the village ‘chaupal’, the venue of his first rally scheduled for a the day, in an open jeep.

A hesitant Sharma gets down from his vehicle amid slogans of ‘Bharat mata ki jai’ and ‘BJP zindabad’. He is led to the open jeep by a jostling and cheering crowd after profusely garlanding him. After a short ‘victory lap’ in village’s narrow lanes, he is finally led to the ‘chaupal’, where a motley crowd comprising veiled women, the elderly and youngsters give him a rousing reception by presenting him the traditional ‘pagri’.

After greeting the crowd, Sharma, who is desperately trying to put three successive defeats behind him, smartly plays the ‘Modi card’, claiming how Modi left the footprints of his larger than life image in the US, China and Japan.

Referring to Narendra Modi’s October 8 Mahendragarh visit, Sharma tries to strike an emotional chord with the crowd, bragging how Modi was coming to seek votes for him. “Ath tareek ne aage wali seate kabza laina..chula neaud saey (on October 8, go and occupy front seats with your family),” the BJP leader urges a responsive crowd.

Meanwhile, the audience seems to be inclined to give the BJP a chance this time around. “We have traditionally been Congress supporters, but there is no harm in giving the BJP a chance this time,” says septuagenarian Rajpal, a Rivasa resident.

A similar script is played out at other corner meetings in Sisoth, Palli, Bhurjat and Adalpur villages with Sharma trying to coax the audience to come out in large number for Modi’s October 8 rally and give BJP a decisive mandate. At the rallies, the organisers make it a point to mention that Sharma’s victory will go a long way in bringing ‘chaudhar (supremacy) back to south Haryana as Sharma is BJP’s chief ministerial candidate.

Referring to a slew of incentives to the 36 biradaris (communities) of the state in the BJP manifesto, Sharma tells the electorate that the party has decided to give Rs 2,000 as old-age pension and Rs 6,000 or Rs 9,000 unemployment allowance to different categories of unemployed youth.

“The BJP will get a majority on its own in the wake of the strong anti-incumbency against the government for its acts of omission and commission. This and ‘Modi wave’ will consolidate votes in BJP’s favour and there will not be no need for a post-poll alliance,” Sharma says during the course of his campaign.

Backward Morcha call for defeat of all parties
Sushil Manav
Tribune News Service

Sirsa, October 5
The Akhil Bhartiya Dalit, Pichhra, Alpsankhyak Avm Sarvsamaj Bhaichara Committee, urged the public to defeat the Congress, INLD and the BJP in the Assembly elections, to express anger against reservation to Jat community for central government jobs.

Addressing the mediapersons today, Jaswinder Singh Dhariwal, national president and Rajender Nimiwal, state president of the committee, alleged all three parties had similar views on this issue.

“The National Backward Classes Commission did not consider Jats as educationally and socially backward in its report. Yet the then UPA government at the Centre on March 2, 2014, took a decision to include Jats in the central list for BCs to get benefit of their votes in nine states,” alleged Nimiwal.

He said Narendra Modi sought votes by projecting himself as backward and promised to get justice to backwards among the backwards. He said people voted for Modi in huge numbers, but his government too described the UPA government’s decision as a step taken in public interest while filing affidavit before Supreme Court in a petition filed against reservation.

The committee leaders alleged Modi had stabbed backward classes in the back by grabbing their votes on false promises. They claimed the defeat of BJP candidates in recent byelections was a pointer to the anger among BCs against the BJP government at the Centre.

He said even the INLD has never opposed reservation to Jats and has been seen standing with it. The committee leaders alleged Dalits and BCs have been at the receiving end of the atrocities by dominant castes under Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s regime in the state.
