High drama prevailed in the Sector 26 vegetable and fruit market when commission agents, dealing in apples, gheraoed the office of the market committee in protest against a concerted drive by the market committee to check evasion of the market committee fee.

A few days after two leading businessmen of Sector 17 received an extortion letter from the Babbar Khalsa group, demanding Rs 31 lakh each as sewa (service), some unidentified miscreants, claiming to be from the Babbar Khalsa group, pasted posters in different parts of Sector 17, threatening people with dire consequences if they demanded dowry or were accused of rape.

KK Sharma to be Goa Chief Secy
Chandigarh, September 26
The Adviser to the UT Administrator, KK Sharma, has been posted as the Chief Secretary of Goa. He will replace B Vijayan, who retires on September 30. A 1983 batch IAS officer, Sharma had joined the UT in April 2011. The formal orders of Sharma’s new place of posting are expected in a day or two.

The dance drama was an amalgamation of the Nritya Natika on Durga Mahishasur Vadh of the east and Garba and Dandiya of the west. Woman gets jail for defaming mother

Upholding the conviction order passed by the lower court and rejecting an appeal against the order, the Court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Nazar Singh today sentenced a woman to six months imprisonment in a criminal defamation  case.The convict, Rabinder Sidhu, was arrested after the orders were pronounced.

Spurt in snatching cases

The city has witnessed a sudden spurt in the snatching incidents in the last 10 days. Two snatching incidents were reported on Thursday taking the total number of snatchings to 12, besides a snatching bid.

Imposters booked for robbing lecturer
Chandigarh, September 26
The Chandigarh Police have booked unidentified persons for robbing a lecturer working in a private institute, at the ISBT, Sector 43, posing as police officials. The incident had taken place on September 19 when the victim was on his way to his native village in Himachal Pradesh. The case was registered today.

11 participants test their martial arts skills
Panchkula: A Black Belt Test was conducted at Master Bikram Thapa’s Choi Kwang Do Martial Art School of Education in Sector 16. Around eleven participants took part with their age ranging from seven years to 35 years. The black belt test was conducted under strict assessment of techniques, stamina, strength, endurance and flexibility. Students, including Pari, Pranshul, Aryaman, Ishika, Shubham, Manish, Phool Kumar, Gaurav and Karan participated in the event. A test for second degree black belt was also conducted on the same day, in which Purna Gautam and Pradeep Virk participated. The test was conducted over two hours and basic techniques, defense drill, air shield techniques and strength techniques with breaking multiple wooden boards were assessed. — TNS
