PU set to scrap dental hospital project

Panjab University (PU) is all set to scrap the prestigious 100-bedded Dr Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital project for want of funds. The issue is being tabled at a “special think tank committee” meeting, which will be chaired by PU Vice-Chancellor Arun Kumar Grover next week.

Due to the code of conduct, the administration has decided not to issue any VIP passes this time. “Because of the code of conduct, no minister will be officially invited to attend havans during the nine-day fest. So, we have decided not to issue VIP passes,” said Deputy Commissioner SS Phulia.

Women artistes get ready to play their part in the Ramlila at Sector 28, Chandigarh, on Tuesday. Acting on a petition seeking initiation of contempt proceedings against UT Administrator Shivraj Patil and two other functionaries, the Punjab and Haryana High Court today issued them notice. In this case, the High Court had stayed the demolition of a house, but it was allegedly pulled down before the next date of hearing.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court today dismissed appeals filed by the Chandigarh Administration, paving way for the payment of overtime wages to about 300 CTU employees from January 2006 to July 2009.
The Chandigarh Administration and another petitioner had earlier filed a bunch of four petitions against the presiding officer of UT Industrial Tribunal and Labour Court.

CBI procures CCTV footage

Chandigarh, September 23
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) today procured the CCTV footage of five cameras installed at the Burail police post to examine the video in which CBI sleuths are caught manhandling and hitting Inspector Rajesh Shukla after the CBI nabbed him and two other policemen while allegedly accepting Rs 10,000 bribe.

One booked for injuring constable
Chandigarh, September 23
The Chandigarh Police booked a Sector 21 resident for knocking down a constable while driving his car at the gate of Hotel Taj in Sector 17. The police said that Sandeep Makroo, who is an employee of the hotel, hit constable Gurmeet Singh with his car at Gate No. 1 of the hotel on Monday. 

9 snatching cases reported in a week
Chandigarh, September 23
Snatchers are back to haunt the city residents as within a week, nine snatching incidents have been reported from the city. Besides, a snatching attempt made on a woman was foiled.

37-year-old man ends his life
Panchkula, September 23
A 37-year-old man committed suicide by consuming celphos tablets here late last night. The victim, identified as Yogesh Sharma, was a resident of Mansa Devi Complex, Sector 5.
