The District Transport Officer (DTO) impounded 20 school buses during a special campaign aimed at ensuring safety of schoolchildren. According to information, the vehicles were impounded for not following the safety norms.

A 65-year-old man was drowned in Budha Nullah here today. The victim has been identified as Darshan Singh, a resident of Shakti Nagar. The incident came to light when a rag picker spotted the body floating in the nullah.

Police ‘lathicharge’ protesters
Ludhiana, September 11
Thirteen persons, including Samson Dogar, secretary of Kalvari Church, and his supporters, suffered injuries as the police used force to disperse agitators who were protesting against the management of Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) today.

Realtor’s family cries foul
Ludhiana, September 11
The family of realtor Gulshan Kumar, owner of GK Estate, has cried foul claiming that he is being targeted by a nexus, involving politicians and police officials. Savitri Devi, mother of Gulshan Kumar, alleged that two Punjab Police inspectors, who had taken Rs 1.11 crore from his son on interest, had orchestrated a plan and slapped two false cases on her son.

Rural medical officers not paid salaries for 3 months

Punjab rural medical officers have not received their salaries for the past three months. The Ministry of Rural Development disburses the salaries. The doctors have been running from pillar to post to get their hard-earned money.

Bid to preserve heritage

The Tamil Nadu government has taken the initiative to digitise manuscripts to preserve the intellectual heritage of the state. Let alone taking such a step, the Punjab government has not even lent any support to people who have been working for the past 11 years in digitising old documents and works related to Punjab.

Anganwadi protest: 3 hurt as police resort to force
Ludhiana, September 11
Two anganwadi workers fell unconscious while three suffered minor injuries when the police resorted to force to stop them from blocking a road in the Shimlapuri area here today. A large number of anganwadi workers led by the Anganwadi Mulazam Union protested outside the office of Child Development and Project Officer. The workers gathered outside the office of Rupinderjit Kaur, project officer, from where they decided to march toward the Canal Road. The police stopped them from entering the Juvenile Jail Complex.

Farm university all set for Kisan Mela

Employee Provident Fund Scheme
Wage ceiling up
Ludhiana, September 11
Giving a jolt to employees, the government has raised the wage ceiling of the Employee Provident Fund Scheme from Rs 6,500 to Rs 15,000 per month. This has been the eighth revision since 1952. The wage ceiling was last revised in 2001 from Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,500 per month.

2 members of chain-snatchers’ gang held
Khanna, September 11
The Khanna police claimed to have arrested two members of a chain snatchers gang and recovered a stolen motorcycle from their possession. The accused have been identified as Rajinder and Rakesh, both residents of Uttar Pradesh.

Man tries to kidnap child
Ludhiana, September 11
High drama was witnessed at the railway station when a man tried to snatch a five-month-old girl from her mother’s lap. Ravi Kumar, resident of Pritam Nagar in Haibowal, said he, along with his sister, was waiting for their train when a man arrived at the platform and tried to snatch the child.
