2 die in road mishaps

Kalka, September 7
Two persons died in separate road accidents on the NH-21A. According to information, the first incident took place near Sitomajra village of the Pinjore block. A pedestrian was crushed to death by a recklessly driven truck.

The deceased has been identified as Ratan Singh (45) of Uttaranchal. He was walking along the road with his brother, Parkash, when the accident took place. Parkash also sustained injuries in the accident.

In another incident, Ram Kumar, a labour, who was working at a construction site along the link road of Charnia village of the Pinjore block, died when a jeep ran over him. He died on the spot.

The police have handed over the bodies to their family members after conducting post-mortem examinations. — OC

1 held for fraudulent withdrawal of money

Chandigarh, September 7
A day after a theft of Rs 10,000 was reported from an ATM machine of the ICICI Bank in Sector 34, the police have arrested the accused, Vikram, in the case. Satvinder Kaur of Sector 34 B, Chandigarh, had reported the matter to the police stating that an unidentified person has withdrawn cash worth Rs 10,000 from her account through an ATM machine of the ICICI bank in Sector 34 market.

The police investigations revealed that the accused used to pretend to be withdrawing money from the other ATM while cleverly noting down the PIN number of the card of the person withdrawing cash. He used to insert a pin in a gap on the side of the place where the card is to be inserted. After the user used to leave thinking that the ATM machine is not working, he used to remove the pin and then put the pin and withdraw the amount.

The accused Vikram is a school dropout and is under police custody. Further investigations to ascertain his involvement in other cases is on. — TNS

Spinners put Punjab in driver’s seat

Rain led dampness helped Punjab spinners to fold Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) batting line up on a mere total of 180 runs, on the second day, during the four-day final of the 4th All-India (U-19) Invitation Cricket Tournament for the Dhruv Pandove Trophy, held here today.

Punjab’s left arm spinner Karan Bhargav hogged the limelight by claiming 4 wickets for 55 runs and damaging MPCA’s line up. His counterpart off spinner Sukhwinder Singh supported him by grabbing 3 for 67. Hartejasvi Kapoor also bowled a good spell of 2 for 26.

Earlier, resuming at overnight score of 42 runs, MPCA lost their overnight opener Rahul Jain who was claimed by Hartejasvi Kapoor for 19 runs. Salman Khan then joined Shivam Tiwari and the duo put on 55 runs for the third wicket before Salman was snapped by wicket-keeper Anmol Malhotra bowled by off spinner Sukhwinder Singh for 24 off 72 balls inclusive of two boundaries. Shivam then joined by Nitish Lushkari however, failed to face the spinning attack of Punjab. Shivam was the first to go when Karan was caught by Sukhwinder in the deep after making 63 runs off 200 balls inclusive of three boundaries and a six. Karan struck again by claiming Mehul Singh, who scored duck. At this stage, when the visiting side was at 133 for 5, off spinner Sukhwinder claimed Shahwaz Khan (3 runs) and Nitish Gurjar (duck) in quick succession. Karan again striked as he claimed Bhupinder Bhadoria (1 run) and Kuldeep Singh (9 runs) while Sagar Sharma was run out at zero. Nitish Lushkari was the only MPCA batsman to stand tall with his unbeaten contribution off 48 off 94 balls studded with four boundaries and a six. MPCA’s innings folded up in 80.2 overs.

Starting their first innings, Punjab opened with Karan Sharma and Sanvir Singh’s opening partnership of 59 runs before Karan getting caught by Sagar Sharma off Nitish Gurjar for 42 off 50 balls with five boundaries and two sixes. Sanvir was joined by Mansab Gill and the two remain unbeaten till the stumps were drawn on the second day. Sanvir scored an unbeaten 62 off 107 balls inclusive of eight boundaries while Mansab Gill scored an unbeaten 38 off 73 balls with four boundaries and one six. For MPCA, Nitish Gurjar claimed one wicket for 55 runs.

Strawberry Fields’ swimmer Asav Kumar bags top spot

Asav Kumar of Strawberry Fields School, Sector 26, claimed the top spot in the boys’ (U-14) category of 50m freestyle event during the ongoing Inter-School Swimming Competition for boys and girls here today. He clocked 31:52 seconds to win the water race.

Shubham Kaura of Saupin’s School, Sector 32, clocked 32:84 seconds to finish second while Rishi Rana of Delhi Public School, Sector 40, claimed the third spot in 33.18 seconds.

In the boys (U-14) 100m freestyle event, Asav Kumar again proved his iron with winning the patch in 1.10.10 minutes while Rishi Rana claimed the second spot in 1.13.27 minutes. Shubham Kaura clocked 1.16.38 minutes to finish third. In the 200m free style boys (U-14) category, Adit Gupta of Delhi Public School, Sector 40, claimed the first position with 2.44.92 minutes while Dhruv of the same school clocked 2.45.19 minutes and Shahdeep Dhillon of Chitkara International School, Sector 25, clocked 2.54.20 minutes to finish second and third, respectively.

DPS lad Jaskeerat adjudged chess champion

Jaskeerat Singh of Delhi Public School, Sector 40, was crowned as champion on the concluding day of the Chandigarh (U-25) Youth Chess Championship at St Xavier’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, here today. He claimed the title by securing 5.5 points.

Anubhav Tuknayat, who ended his final round at 5.5 points, claimed the second spot on the basis of moves while Varun Gupta and Rahul Arora, with 4.5 points each, finished their campaign at third and fourth spot, respectively. A total of 43 players, including nine internationally rated players took part in the championship.

The top four positions claimers Jaskeerat Singh, Anubhav Tuknayat, Varun Gupta and Rahul Arora have been selected to represent Chandigarh in the nationals of the (U-25) Youth Chess Championship to be held in Tamil Nadu from October 25 to 31. AP Saksena, president of the Chandigarh Chess Association, awarded the winners and participants.

GGDSD paddlers emerge champs

Paddlers of GGDSD College, Sector 32, won the Panjab University Inter-College Table Tennis Championship for Women that concluded at Gymnasium Hall of the varsity here today. GN Khalsa College for Women, Ludhiana, secured the second place. In the finals, the champions defeated GN Khalsa College for Women Ludhiana, by 3-1.

In the opening match, Naina Suri of GGDSD College lost to Ludhiana’s Nirdosh Sood by 3-1. Sood named the opening set at 4-11 however, Suri bounced back in the second and claimed it by 14-12. In the next two sets, Sood registered 10-12 and 4-11 win over her rival.

In the second match, SD’s Kalyani Kakkar defeated Jasveer at 3-0 in direct sets by 11-3, 11-5 and 11-4 while in her second game, Kakkar again initiated her team’s lead by outclassing Nirdosh Sood by 3-0 at 11-8, 11-6 and 11-6. In the last game, SD’s Sakshi Jain struggled hard before naming the match against Ludhiana’s Bhumika by 3-1. After Bhumkia naming the opening set at 3-11 (6-11, 11-7, 11-6, 13-11), Sakshi outclassed her rival in the next three games at 11-7, 11-6 and 13-11.

For the third spot fight, PU campus defeated AS College for Women, Khanna, by 3-0. Except a tough fight in the opening game, the campus team won rest two matches with ease. In the opening match, Sheetal defeated Poonam by 3-1 after losing the first set (10-12, 11-4, 11-7, 11-8) while Anviksha defeated Rimpi by 3-0 (11-3, 11-8, 11-8). In the last match, Aakriti overpowered Shivali by 3-0 (11-8, 11-7, 11-5). — TNS

CHART trainees qualify for main draw

In the ongoing St Stephen’s School AITA Championship Series Tennis Tournament, CHART (Chandigarh Academy for Rural Tennis) continued to play well and book their place in the main draw leg at CLTA tennis courts in Sector 10 here today.

In the final qualifying round, played today, CHART trainee Shashikant Rajput beat Ritik Rana at 8-3 while another CHART trainee Bhupender Dahiya beat Sarabjot Singh at 8-0. Also, CLTA trainee sixth seed MS Karthik defeated CHART trainee and ninth seed Krishan Hooda in a closely contested match. Karthik was trailing 1-6 however, used good variation to win the next seven games.

In another major upset CLTA trainee, 14th seed, Archit Juneja upset 8th seed Chiraj Dandona at 8-5. The main draw matches will be held at CLTA tomorrow from 9 am onwards.

2nd Corporate Cricket Cup

PGI XI and Earth Infrastructure XI registered victories in their respective matches of the ongoing 2nd Corporate Cup by the Professional Cricket Club at Guru Nanak Public School, Sector 36, here today.

In the first match, PGI XI defeated Placement Guru XI by five wickets. The losing side, after electing to bat first, posted 162 runs for 7 wickets in 20 overs. Their innings was studded with a fine 40-run contribution by Sarthak. He scored his share off 33 balls and was equally supported by Ashish, who scored a quick-fire 33 in 25, to stable the team’s innings. In the dying overs, Tejas pushed the score further with his 22 off 17 runs contribution. For the bowling side, Hansraj claimed 1 for 17 while Anil took 1 for 25.

In reply, PGI XI scored 163 runs for 5 wickets in 18.4 overs. Vivek (43 runs off 43 balls) started the innings on a good note while Manoj (39 in runs off 16 balls) and Puneet (29 runs off 10 balls) scored their share with quick-fire knocks. For the bowling side, Ashish claimed 2 for 12.

In the second match, Earth Infrastructure XI registered 31-run victory over Lawyers’ XI. After putting to bat first, the winning side led the score chart by scoring 229 runs for 6 wickets in 20 over. Riding high on Sunil’s speedy contribution of 104 runs off 50 balls and Manoj’s 101 runs off 55 balls, the team achieved the target. For the bowling side, Pankaj Sharma hogged the limelight by taking 4 for 28.

In reply, the losing side folded their innings at 198 runs for 8 wickets in the allotted slot of 20 overs. Gouravdhir scored 84 runs off 47 balls while Tejpal scored 38 runs off 21 balls to remain the main scorer in team’s total. For Earth Infrastructure, Manoj claimed 2 for 38.

PU lift water polo trophy

Men’s water polo team of Panjab University Campus lifted the Panjab University’s Inter-College Water Polo Championship for the session 2014-15 that concluded at the swimming pool of the varsity here today.

In the finals of the championship, the title winners defeated GGDSD College, Sector 32, by 4-1.

Meanwhile, SGGS College, Sector 26, defeated DAV College, Sector 10, by 13-08 to finish at the third position in the tournament.

Earlier, in the semifinals of the championship, Panjab University Campus defeated DAV College, Sector 10, by 7-1 while GGDSD College, Sector 32, defeated SGGS College, Sector 26, by 9-3.

St Xavier’s soccer tourney from today

St Xavier’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, will host their annual feature six-a-side Football Championship at school’s soccer grounds from tomorrow. The championship will be conducted in three categories, including boys’ U-12, U-15 and U-17 categories.

In the boys (U-12) category, a total of 8 teams have confirmed their entry while in boys (U-15), 11 teams will vie for claiming the winning trophy. In the boys (U-17) category, 10 teams from tricity will take part in the mega event. The matches will begin tomorrow at 8 am.
