Uproar in House as govt gives clean chit to Madni in land scam
Majid Jahangir Tribune News Service
Srinagar, August 30 The Upper House witnessed pandemonium after Chairman Amrit Malhotra tabled the report submitted by the Chief Secretary over the issue. “No permission for conversion of land from agricultural to non agricultural activity has ever been granted by the revenue department,” stated the Revenue Department report submitted by Chief secretary Iqbal Khanday. The report said the land measuring 89 kanals and 18 marlas at Marhama village in Anantnag district was property land and had been transferred in the name of Srinagar resident Abdul Majeed Sheikh in 2010. “The mutations have been attested in 2010,” the report said, adding the allegations of encroaching of 4,000 kanals did not seem to be based on facts. In the past few days, both Houses of the legislature have been witnessing uproarious scenes over the issue. The National Conference (NC) members had accused Madni of being a party to the clandestine land deal. Madni, who has won twice from the Devesar Assembly constituency, is seeking re-election. He is the maternal uncle of PDP president Mehbooba Mufti. NC members had been alleging that Madni was party to the deal involving illegal conversion of nearly 4,000 kanals of agricultural land worth crores for non-agricultural purposes at Marhama. After the report was tabled in the Legislative Council, the NC legislators insisted on a probe by a House panel. They did not allow the question hour. The Chairman, however, refused to order a House probe. As the pandemonium continued, the House was adjoined for half an hour. When it met again, NC members walked into the well and reiterated their demand for a House probe. |
